The great PW vs MotW Debate

I've been seeing a lot of army lists, strategies, and comments saying you should take Mark of the Wulfen over a Power Weapon or Power Fist with your grey hunter squads. However considering how likely you are to be playing against other marines, particularly the ultra popular Grey Knights, doesn't it make more sense to grab both? Why does everyone want you to make a choice?

Yeah I guess it's all about what you're willing to spend and where. 75 points total for 3 Grey Hunter squads works for me. At least in my 2000 point list. I could see needing to trim it down in smaller lists.

I always take both.

 

My loadout is 8 with melta, pw, standard, Motw, WG with pf/melta

I prefer the reliability of power weapons- but I understand that MotW has a higher potential. You COULD kill more people with MotW- 7 or 8 rending attacks, but the probability is lower against most marine type armies. Either way its points well spent.

It widely relies on what specific task you want your GH to be doing.well, what they are being thrown up against.

 

For Power armoured foes, the power weapon is the more reliable choice. The Motw has a greater risk factor of not killing off as many of your foes, the Powerfist will have the risk of being killed before you even get a chance to hit with it.

 

For horde or Weaker armoured foes, the Motw would be be more suited as the number of attacks done will be more likely to kill off more enemies. The powerfist has the same problem as before and the power weapons attacks are negligible at best since they are going to die anyway.

 

Finally, the powerfist would be good against vehicle assaults.

 

So, the reason why people don't tend to take all of them at once usually derives from the fact that they don't want every Grey Hunter pack to be an all rounder pack. As other more experienced players have said time and again, we rely far to heavily on our packs doing everything at once. True you could make a mix of all of them, but in the bigger picture .. is it really using your force effectively.

Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon, Mark of the Wulfen are all 15 points and the same cost as another GH. Also the banner is only 10. Add to the fact that the wolf guard get a special discount (but you need to buy the twin linked weapon) the SW codex is very nicely done. The balance is good because you see people take many diferent things.

there's a debate over this?? what rock have i been under?

 

i rock both power weapon and MotW in my GH squads. i dont understand why somebody wouldnt. (you can say points, but i figure if those weapons can help a unit survive CC then you just saved the units cost.)

until recently ive been going one or the other, but now I wouldnt leave either off my squads, the combat damage potential is just to good to paass up! the carnage the pair can create especially with a banner is simply mouthwatering! and in agreement with WL Kieran I also must've benn under a rock (probably hunting some nasty Ice trolls!) when the debate was flaring......

I only run PW or PF +/- PP - purely because I run up against mainly PA enemies (GK/Vanilla) and so the definite 1-3 dead a round makes life better, although if I was running against horde types like 'Nids or Orks then I'd drop the PP and take MoTW + PW so I have multiple choice and slightly better vs MCs - I always take the Standard it's simply too good not to.

I run full to the teeth packs. to hell with the points!! I don't play competitive though I do try to bring a strong list when I play. I like a lot of options!

I find power weapons work great assualting where mark is better being assualted. Thats what it's been for me so far.
