adamv6
This Saturday saw the start of a 1wk competition in GW shops, called Battle Brothers. Rules are fairly(?) simple. Take a battleforce box, field it however you want, and claim the objectives or beat the opposition to a pulp. Doesn't matter what points value your troops get to, as, there is a handicapping system based around the points difference between the 2 opposing forces. The model rules are strict WYSIWYG. After much argueing, (due to the fact no Greyknights battleforce boxset exists), it was agreed that a GK battleforce consisted of; A single box of Terminators A single box of Greyknights A dreadnought or Razorback So, I thought for all of 3 seconds, and took a dreadnought, sat back and realised, that is 11 troops...<GULP> To take a HQ unit, it had to be a non character HQ, and you had to use a Terminator model. I plumbed for; Grandmaster with 2 servoskulls, pyschotroke grens and Halberd 4 Paladins all with Halberds (1 with a psycannon) 5 Strikes, 1 psycannon Venerable Dreadnought with Assault Cannon and doomfist Everyone had psybolts. Totted up the points and ... 765. So, my first opponent was.... Imperial Guard Due to the huge points difference, IG got every handicap going, choice of side, deployment choice, an extra building etc etc. I sat back and started to realise this could get painful. He placed his objective, I placed mine, staff placed the 3rd in a big open space on the battlefield... I rolled for Grand strategy and make the Ven Dread and Paladins able to capture objectives, and seized the initiative, so went first. Cover on my side of the table was all down the right, and I had placed my objective just outside the only building on my side. I got the VenDread in range of the objective, and in good LOS, and prepared him for the onslaught. The strike squad piled forward into shooting range and the Paladins took to the building near the objective. R1 shooting saw me send one complete squad running for the hills (got to love IG leadership). R1 over His turn involved him firing a dozen plasma shots at my VenDread, which, after several armour pens, I made him reroll and escaped the turn with my Vendread shaken. I lost 2 Strikes to Las fire, and the passed LD with flying colours. R2 saw me move slightly, and clean out his squad of Plasma wielding guardsmen, which was what I needed to get the Paladins roaming free. The vendread shook off his woes (Fortitude I love you), and his contribution was outstanding (I rolled three 6's on the Assault Cannon) managing to kill his commissar. His R2 involved the sudden realisation that having not put a single wound on my Paladins or GM, he was now going to struggle to do so. I lost the last 3 strikes to what felt like 7000 shots from his squads in range (I had to break out another cube of dice to roll my saves). R3 saw the beginning of the end for him, the paladins got in assault range of him, and I risked shooting, leaving enough for me to assault. Needless to say, 4 paladins and a GM against 10 IG is not a fair fight. My consolidation roll was an outstanding 6, and I made contact with another squad. The Vendread got rid of his pesky sentinel as well. His R3 involved him crying alot. We shook hands. Lessons learned - 1) IG "Bring it Down" is a pain in the backside, and had me rolling saves like there was no tomorrow. 2) At armour 10, IG Sentinels can be bought down with ease by a VenDread and Assault Cannon. My next battle was against a Black Templars squad. I found out how nasty the Emperors Champion is against IC's Will post details later. Crynn
Also, paladins cannot take a psycannon in a 4 man unit. You have to make it to 5 guys. heretic??ME??
Do you think they having trouble shifting £60 boxes now or something?? They really should just make battle forces army legal as well. The Holy Heretic
That guardsman weren't doing all that great, wasting his plasma on your dread, when he could have been focusing on wiping out your infantry :cuss Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/247088-gw-battle-brother-war-reports/#findComment-2991586 Share on other sites
adamv6
Also, paladins cannot take a psycannon in a 4 man unit. You have to make it to 5 guys. I made this point at the time, the staff said they were happy as is, as the GM could have taken a psycannon upgrade. QUOTEMy consolidation roll was an outstanding 6, and I made contact with another squad. how ? I didn't make that very clear did I, I actually made contact with the squad holding his last objective. He went all out in R3 to stop the Paladins, but got nowhere. That guardsman weren't doing all that great, wasting his plasma on your dread No he didn't do good at all, but I had placed my Paladins out of LOS from his plasma squad on purpose. I got quiet lucky on R2 with my shooting, and he failed almost every save. I eyed up the £60 boxset of Wolves for my son, and thought it was a waste of money. I don't think any of the battle force box sets are that well set out to make a starting army. We argued for some time about what should be in a Greyknights battle force (if it existed), to the point where I think the staff thought I was just being purposely awkward. They argued that it should include a transport, but my counter argument was that GK's deep strike. I argued that it should include an Inquisitor, they argued that none of the other boxes contain a special HQ unit. In the end, we ended up as it was. adamv6
My 2nd battle against the Black Templar was very interesting. I won, with the vendread and 3 paladins left on the table. The battle went to 5 rounds, the 3rd being my most costly, thanks to the Emperors Champion. I5, WS6 and the Black sword saw my GM hit the floor like a vodka fuelled tart on a Friday night. Definitely learned a lesson to not engage him in CC when you have an IC around ^_^ Interestingly, due to the Black Templars always move forward rules, I was able to second guess some of his moves, especially in R2, where I managed to stop his Rhino dead in its tracks, forcing his squad and EC into the open for me to soften them up. He dismounted from the rhino and used it for cover, but one of my Paladins could see them, so I used Holocaust and took 4 of them out with it. The vendread was outstanding again, and while I understand the advantages of using autocannon, the assault cannon has done splendidly for me so far. Definitely learned a lesson to not engage him in CC when you have an IC around why? your faster . so hit before him , he doesnt have a storm shield so saves only on +4 from his armor .even wounding and hiting on+3 you should get enough wounds to use your force weapon and kill him . even if you dont he is only 2W so 2 failed invs kill him anyway. Murcielago
So what did the Black Templar Battleforce have? Was it just the space marine battleforce with a black templar upgrade kit? He has a +2 save, and a +4 inv. He is also I5, and the black sword gives him +2 S and its a power weapon. Coupled with the fact he always puts wounds on IC's, he is a pain in the backside. And yes, I did slice him up the next turn with Halberds. Murcielago, it was basically the space marines box with upgrades. The BT player had done some really nice mods on his models, his Emperors Champ model was awesome. I opted to use the 'troke grens and rolled a 1, which set a precedent, as, I think I managed to only put a single hit on him which he saved.
