KaiserTJ1860
Hey folks, Im just finishing off my chappy and his lucious deep red, gold-flecked power armour (its not canon, but i like the idea of a bold and bright chaplain to really stick out and inspire his troops) is in need of a nice glossy finish to really round it off. what brands do you use? (Im in the UK if it helps) How to do you apply it - with other products (like the GW purity seal) or some other protective coats? winterdyne
Vallejo Model Color gloss varnish is super shiney. Thin a touch with water, and apply with a good soft sable brush in smooth strokes. Or airbrush it (thin with water and flow improver). Seahawk
GW's 'ardcoat works perfectly well too. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/247163-high-gloss-varnish/#findComment-2992195 Share on other sites
KaiserTJ1860
Just a quick follow up question. i have a the purity seal spray to protect my models after they have been painted. should I spray that first then use the gloss varnish or should it be the other way round? winterdyne
I'd avoid purity seal if you can, for flat coating Testor's Dullcoat is usually regarded as the best. The 'best' method for gaming minis: Gloss the whole thing (use a decent gloss spray / airbrush varnish). Gloss is harder wearing than matt. This layer protects. Matt the whole thing (use a decent matt spray / airbrush varnish). This takes of the shine. As it wears, you'll notice the gloss showing again - this indicates it's time to touch up the matt. Gloss what needs to be gloss by hand. Don't matt spray clear components. This will cause a frosty look, which you don't want. It'll be hit and miss whether glossing over the top removes that effect.
