How old is he? I have been painting with my 8-year-old nephew, and he just picked a scheme and went with it. He has been getting better the more he practices. I'm not saying his painting is the best thing ever (he IS 8) but it's way better than my first models (which I painted when I was 16 or so) and more importantly, he's happy with it.

As far as schemes, I'd say Iron Warriors (silver armor, gold trim) is by far the easiest, since metallic colors are super-simple to do. Night Lords, Alpha Legion and the lesser known Children of Purgatos also have simple but effective schemes. Blue and green are relatively easy colors.

If he's a younger player, chances are he will want to paint them red and black. Deep red is pretty simple, but bright crimson is actually a tough color to get right.

Iron Warriors spring to mind as one of the easiest colour schemes to paint. Simple black spray, then drybrush the metal work, with some details added to break it up (and dependent on confidence) Or, rather than drybrush, layer metals then use washes to alter the tone. There is an example below if you are unsure on the scheme.
