VonMerrick
When I left playing the game a few years ago, I rarely ever saw a Land Speeder used in my area. Upon reviewing many of the lists here, I see a lot of MM/HF land speeders. Are these a more effective option than Swiftclaw bikes for the points? Im going to be playing mostly 1000 point lists to start. Right now I'd estimate I'd be playing 1000 points against Imperial Guard, Salamanders, and maybe tyranids. Going to be playing Morkai's Company and currently I have a Rune Priest, scout squad with a melta gun, 2 full squads of Grey Hunters with PW, and 2x Meltaguns in Rhinos, and a 6 man Long Fang squad of 2 Las, 3 ML. I have 235 points to play with so please help my out with some suggestions as the game mechanics have changed. I last played in a store or tournament setting in the third edition and only played 4th and one/two games of the 5th in a private group of friends that have left the hobby so my ideas may not match up with your experience. I'm on the fence about taking a Deadnought, and originally I was going to be taking a 10 wolves as fast attack option for theme, but several people have suggested taking speeders. Russ Brother 92
okay the key reason people take speeders is simple - if you take 2 Speeders with MM/HF (70pts each) 140pts that's two extremely fast units that can take on all units from AV14 to hordes of termagants or ork boyz, then you can use the rest of the points you could buy a HB/TML Speeder (90pts) giving you some manouverable long range support as well. hendrik
welcome to the fang! first of all you need to know that we don't use squads, but instead use packs ;) and about the landspeeders: i actually think the heavy flamer-multi melta variety isn't that great, it usually involves getting close with your opponent and it is there that AV10 starts to hurt (even lucky bolters can bring it down). i actually prefer a more long distance landspeeder, be it a landspeeder typhoon or one equiped with twin heavy bolters. these have the range to stay away from most things that can hurt them wile still being able to flank the opponent. Jonas Stromclaw
If I were you I'd go with the Swiftclaws. The landspeeder is used for its flexibility, speed, and relatively. You have 235 points left, so points aren't an issue, and the swiftclaws trade a small loss in speed and versatility in return for increased survivability and close combat potential. You've got antitank covered quite well, anti-horde not as much. The swiftclaws need a leader, so either take a wolf guard or trade in your rune priest for a wolf priest on a bike. Example: Wolf guard option: 2 WG, 1 to scouts, 1 to long fangs WG w/bike, powerfist Swiftclaws (4) w/ flamer, power weapon Leaves six points to give someone melta bombs Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/247193-unit-selection-help/#findComment-2992926 Share on other sites
Wulfebane
Getting rid of a Rune Priest is blasphemy in this edition. I like my speeders. I've play-tested speeders and swiftclaw bikers.. I found the speeders to be more survivable as my swiftclaws kept getting focus-fired down before they could engage in melee. Once in melee, I will say they held their own (tied up a squad of death company for 2 turns). But I value being able to deploy a counter-solution to those unanticipated deep strikes to my flanks or needing to quickly maneuver around some terrain to take out a chimaera or w/e that my LFs don't have line of sight to. For that, you just can't beat a speeder. Plus, being able to deploy up to three as an individual Fast Attack slot each means I can have my whole backfield buzzing with long-ranged support that doesn't need to worry too much about positional disadvantage and leaving my LF pack(s) to give suppressive fire for my GHs. VonMerrick
As for arming the speeders, would duel typhoons be too much of a points sink? The typhoon launcher and the Heavy Bolter give the speeders the range and flexibility I like, but I'm concerned I'm putting too many points into them at this level. If I drop the 10 wolves, theres the extra points. so for a 1000 pts you'd have a Rune Priest positioned with 2 Las, 3ML Long Fangs , a scout squad with a melta, two full grey hunter squads in rhinos with 2 meltaguns and a Power weapon apiece and two Land Speeder Typhoons. Would you suggest adding anything for my last 40? I was thinking a Razorback to position with the long fangs for extra fire. VonMerrick
As an addendum to my last post, would forgoing the typhoon launchers for cheaper tornados (maybe duel heavy bolters) be more cost efficient on the table? Russ Brother 92
I feel it often depends on play-style, I'd be more inclined to go with the Typhoons if I had the points, unless I was facing a horde army at which point I'd be inclined to go for a Tornado with AC/HB but again it still depends on points. VonMerrick
Thanks for all your advice. I appreciate it. I'm leaning towards the typhoons, but wanted to make sure they were decently priced unit for their effectiveness.
