Martin's pre-Heresy Blood Angels; a blog of sorts...

Well since my Krieg army got too big and unwieldy- not to mention that I rarely play large-scale 40K games for which an armoured Krieg regiment is more suited- I decided to have another go at 40K. This time in the form of a small pre-heresy Blood Angels army. I love the heresy fluff and imagery, plus the general aesthetic and design harken back to the old days when I got into the hobby 25 years ago. So I am basing the army on both Rogue Trader-era models and conversions utilising all kinds of bitz, GW or not. I am no expert on Space Marines, Blood Angels or what is considered canon or not, but I get the impression that as long as one avoids the post-Sanguinius effects like Black Rage/Death Company and the like, I will be on safe ground. If I am off-base here, please enlighten me

I am doing the core troops and some terminators at the moment, and I am trying to figure out a suitable colour scheme. I love dark colours on my Warhammer models, in keeping with the gritty and gloomy atmosphere. So I am airbrushing the basic (Vallejo Air) reds on the models and adding simple highlights with the regular brush. To offset the reds I choose a golden yellow trim and try to keep it from becoming too flashy or immaculate. Not sure if I should add paint chipping and weathering, since this would have to be done carefully and well planned or it will end up looking crap. Plus I believe the Blood Angels are flashy lads who like to keep their armour and equipment nice and shiny to impress the girls...

Here are a few early WIP pics:

Marine (thinking of painting the shoulder gem in green):

I also have 5 RT Rhinos and one RT Land Raider waiting for some paint. My airbrush needs cleaning so Ill get them done sometime next week...

Any input appreciated, since I am new to both Marines and this particular chapter. Are the insignia and markings different for a pre-heresy SM army?

Cheers,

Martin

Excellent start!

I think you have the right level of brightness, as for me, that is what keeps our little men from looking like toys. So good job on the red and the yellow.

<In reverse order because that's how I am>

The last guy is my favorite so far, mostly because his helmet (maxmini?) looks like it came right out of Collected Visions. I think you should consider painting the side plate on the bolter another color, possibly black, just to break things up a bit. I'm not sure if the silver bits have a wash on them or not, if they don't, a little Badab Black might be worth looking into.

Next, nice modeling on the termie shoulder pads. They definitely look PH-ish. When I was looking at some PH Blood Angels art, one of the things that struck me was the predominance of red. That's not to say that the shoulder pads are wrong in any way, but I may have considered painting that mid section in red vs. black. Having said that, he really looks good just the way he is. So I think you win either way you go. Are you going to do some metal work on the storm bolter...er, right. It just occurred to me...in general, during the PH period of time, there weren't storm bolters. I have stuck two bolters together, which is a very reasonable replacement. So that's something to consider.

The last <first> two I will group together. They look great and is one of the reasons ForgeWorld produced the multi-armor models. They just look cool.

This is a great kick off to your project.

Cheers,

Hi mate, and thanks for excellent feedback. I have given the bolters a black wash and they do look a lot better. The helmet on the last guy is indeed Maxmini's Steam Knight helmet; they have lots of nice parts for conversions as well as an excellent jet bike model. Chapter House has a jet bike as well which ties in pretty neatly with the PH esthetics so I'll give them a go as soon as possible. The termie pads are Maxmini also, so I cannot take credit for any modelling work apart from repositioning the tassles a bit. And since these models are all unfinished I will indeed complete the mid section of the termie pads, although I'm not sure which colour would work best. Guess Collected Visions will have to come off the shelf again to serve as inspiration...

A bit miffed a out the storm bolters though; they didn't have them around in the old days? Hmm, not sure how to solve that one...

Quick update:

Same trooper as above. The green gem fit quite well, methinks:

CC termie; still not sure how to paint the flat parts of the shoulder pads...

Another trooper with helmet from Maxmini's great conversion bitz range:

And one RT trooper, banner obviously still to be done:

Did the pre-Heresy markings and insignia differ much from the current ones? Not sure about this so the shoulder pads remain untouched...
