Also, i always thought there was a hidden meaning, being that all the Old Gods had an opposite number (ie Khorne and Nurgle - fast and slow destruction) and a rival (Khorne and slaanesh) and so the 8 pointed star is actually an opposite number (or complement) for Malal - being the twin gods of Anarchy and Balance within the chaos pantheon. Therefore the 8 pointed star represenetes chaos powers united in balance against each other (through favours and boons), rather then chaos undivided (an entity representing the opposition of order in general.)
