Executioners Project Log

Recommended Posts

This is the log for an army I started after being roped into a Badab War army-building challenge by the manager of my local GW. I was initially going to do the Howling Griffons, but I wasn't sure I could do the yellow and red paint scheme justice. In the end I settled on Executioners, as they seemed by far one of the coolest Chapters going, and the Secessionists were looking a little undermanned. Unfortunately, I'm also a glacially slow and unmotivated painter, so despite picking them up last year I've only just started to really paint them.

I'm a pretty mediocre photographer, and the light wasn't brilliant today but with no further ramblings, enjoy some pictures:

They're both still WiP, though it's mostly just detail work and their backpacks to go. Imperial Armour 10 was not particularly helpful in terms of the colour scheme, as there seem to be about three different variations on the colour of shoulders and helmets. In the end I went for straight blue on everything and silver trim. My force is drawn from the Third Company, but I have no idea where to put company colours (or even if I should) as the Third Company Marine in the IA isn't displaying any.

Lastly for now is the freshly built Land Speeder Typhoon with 'Argus-Pattern' modifications; Executioners use speeders instead of bikes for recon work, so I slapped a few extra lights and sensors on and called it good:

As a fellow Executioners player I can help. I asked the good peebles at Forgeworld about their color/iconography and was told that other than using the color of the shoulder pad for tactical, devastator, recon and assault (all others have blue steel on both), all other stuff is Codex. So their company color is the shoulder trim and they have squad numbers on the knees. Veterans have light bronze on the packs and vet sergeants also have the light bronze helms. Packs for all others are dark gunmetal.

I've got something in mind for Thulsa Kane, just need to work up the funds for a Legion of the Damned box. I'm planning to use the Sergeant's body as a base, filling in any pesky flames with a little green stuff, and the book arm from one of the stock Librarians for the Aenigmata Ferrum. Then I just need to find a suitably giant axe, possibly the double-headed one from the Sanguinary Guard.

Thanks for the praise guys. I haven't made much progress on the painting front since I took those pictures, and I'm not likely to for a while either as I start back at uni on monday. That said, I've built a rhino and kitbashed up a command squad, so I'll try to get some pics of those up later today.

Edit: Still playing with my lighting but it doesn't really matter for unpainted stuff, here's the command squad:

Company Champion:

Melta Veteran:

Apothecary:

The whole squad was put together from stuff in my bitz box, hence no caduceus shoulder pad on the Apothecary and their general lack of ornamentation. I think they look okay though, I've been shooting for a more practical, stripped-down look with the Executioners anyway. And as always, it's after you take the photos that you notice the mould lines you missed. <_<

Double post, I know, but hopefully it's okay as there's new content. I've mocked up a potential Captain Vanir Hex out of my bitz box and I wanted to get your opinions on it. There's also been some minor progress on the painting front, but nothing really worth showing.

I'm not sure if I like his pose or not, can't decide if the way he's holding his shield out to the side looks too awkward. Thoughts, brothers?

Try the left arm drawn across in front of his chest. Backhander! Might work better with a one-handed weapon, see how you go.

Raise the right foot up 1mm or so (rock/greenstuff/whatever) if need be - to get a bit of down-the-hill-shoulder-charge if you think it needs it.

Looking at the photos and the model again; the pose doesn't really work with anything but a weapon in the left hand. Thankfully, he's only tacked together so here's version 2:

I think it looks much better in terms of the pose, but it's a shame the axe and larger storm shield are in the wrong hands.

The previous weapons themselves are better, but the model is much better now without them. Compatibility is king. Pose and cohesiveness beats bling.

Maybe turn his head up to 45 degrees to his left, so his direction is a line running through from one foot to the other...
