Hekdar
Hi guys I was wondering if some of you could help me with some painting issues im having. Firstly do any of you have any techniques for painting eyes as im finding mine very hit and miss some times they will complete the model other times will just be a mess. Also how would i go about getting a good stubble/shaved head/ effect on my models. Ive seen it done on this sight and am very interested to know how. Wulfebane
As far as stubble/shaved hair goes, I'll just quote myself when asked about it in my current winter advance wip thread: It's mostly trial and error on which non-wash color to use, but I start by going back over the stubble "area" with ogryn flesh/badab black wash in very thin layers (1:1 mix) after I've finished highlighting the skin. Once I've got it dark enough, I'll go back in with astronomicon grey and tanned flesh mixed (or P3 equivalents) to highlight it lightly. For shaved heads that aren't black hair, I'll do the same process, but switch badab black for dev mud or gryphonne sepia, but I always use ogryn flesh wash to keep the purplish undertone. For eyes, it could depend on which head you use, but the level of squinting in some of the faces can allow you to just blanket the eye sockets in ogryn flesh wash and leave it at that, allowing the illusion that he's squinting too hard to actually see the eyes. If you really wanna see the eyes, the way I prefer it is with (using a 10/0 size brush or smaller) painting the eyeball black or dark brown.. I tried blue and yellow once, but it just didn't seem to work at that scale... then dot the outer rim with an off-white color. I use the P3 line's menoth white highlight. If you feel you can get your brush in there, dot the inner eye too, but it's not always needed as you're usually putting down ogryn flesh over your primer in that area which should give enough contrast to the black pupil. Once all that's done, I go back in and clean up the bottom eyelid (and under the eyebrow if my brush got away from me) with a dark flesh tone. he_plays_guitar
I paint my eyes at the very end of painting the face. After I've done a final wash, I let the wash pool in the eye sockets to make them darker. Then I take my smallest detail brush and paint a thin line of white (sometimes I mix a little bleached bone in it to give an off white color) I start from the innermost part of the eye near the nose, and just paint a thin line from the inside of the eye to the outside. I only do this in one stroke. Otherwise the eyes end up too wide. They should be a slit, not a big circle. Then I take a micro pen and dot the eye. The white is just big enough to cause the dot to touch the top and bottom of the eye, giving a more natural look, not the surprised wide eyed look that can happen if you make the eyes too big. Wulfebane
Cheers for the help will try out all the ideas. one question though where would i find one of these micro pens. are they easy to find Just google "micron pen". You'll find them at any arts and craft store. When I use them to dot my eyes, the size I use is .005 however the ink takes a lot longer to dry and still prone to smudging because it's technically just sitting on top of plastic, not paper, so after you feel it's safely "dried" (say a couple hours) I would lightly brush over it with a clear coat of matte varnish or liquid paint medium. Boltergeist
Good tutorial on stubble here: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2009/06/fa...e-tutorial.html I tend to use codex grey, blended from recessed areas (lines in face, under cheekbones, etc) out to the surface, and then shaded with thin Badab black.
