Grim Wolves Space Marines Chapter

Wolf Slayer 1

The Grim Wolves became a fleet based chapter on permanent patrol after their home planet Lupus succumbed to a massive chaos incursion (possibly during a black crusade??). The chapter master at the time decided it was better to abandon the planet to save the chapter and to continue to fight for the imperium rather than waste all his battle brothers in combat against an overwhelming force. This action saved the chapter, but Lupus was lost to the warp. This has harboured among the Grim Wolves a deep hatred of chaos, and a strong desire to seek out and engage any chaos ships and warbands they encounter.

Though the Grim Wolves themselves are very secretive of their founding chapter, it can be argued that their raiding party style of combat would imply White Scar lineage. This would further reinforce the 'tribalistic' organisational structure of the chapter (as well as their desire to adapt to continual travel as oppose to resettlement on a new homeworld).

The Grim Wolves belief system is based on that of animal spirits, and that by keeping talismans an individual can bestow upon themselves characteristics and traits of the animal they belong to. This has been harboured from the basic belief systems of the pre-warp tribes from which the Grim Wolves recruit. The Grim Wolves believe in an afterlife among the 'Hall of Heroes' where great feasts are eaten among the great warriors of their history and great battles are fought with the 'Dark Spirits'. It is in this Hall of Heroes that the Grim Wolves believe the Emperor resides, as in their belief he was the greatest warrior of all and therefore sits at the head of the table and leads the heroes in battles against the Dark Spirits. Each Grim Wolf aspires to be a fearsome warrior and earn great victories and feats of bravery and heroism so that when they die they may enter the Hall of Heroes and join the Emperor's side in both the battles and the feasts!

This has culivated among the Grim Wolves a somewhat 'die well' attitude among them. Often younger Grim Wolves are eager to earn their place in the Hall of Heroes by trying to exceed each others bravery and skills. To temper this, squads are often mixed ages to allow the younger members to benefit from the experience of the older marines, as well as spurring the older marines to 'not let the cubs get all the glory'. These stories of bravery and heroism are told during daily feasts held at the Hall of Warriors (a mirror to the Hall of Heroes in the afterlife) in which individual sagas are told, and often drinking, eating and hand to hand combat contests are held.

As the Grim Wolves have no homeworld to recruit from, as mentioned before they recruit from several worlds on their patrol route. This in turn has lead to a slight variation on the way they select initiates. The oldest members of the Grim Wolves, often after they have recieved injuries that prevent them from fighting in the ranks are deployed to and remain on each of the recruitment worlds seeking out individuals with potential. These old marines are called the 'Old Wolves' and these marines have both the experience of hundreds of years of combat and warfare as well as memories and stories of the Grim Wolves history, including famed heroes of the chapter and their deeds. Due to the expertise as well as personal experience of what it takes to become a Grim Wolf and what is expected of each battle brother, these Old Wolves spend their time searching for individuals among the tribes that have the potential to become marines. These individuals are then tested and trialled by the Old Wolves who in turn train the initiates in the knowledge and stories they would need as marines. When the Grim Wolf fleet arrives at the planet, these initiates are then brought on board to undergo the genetic compatibility testing and organ implantation needed to become a space marine. It can be noted that due to the small size of the genepools on these planets, as well as the nature of the tribal settlements of these worlds, it is not uncommon for members of the same tribe to be selected for the Grim Wolves (albeit that they are often many generations apart). Due to the genetics and the increased cohesion of a group with shared backgrounds, Grim Wolves fighting units generally source initiates from the same tribes. It is through these instances and through the system of storytelling that a new initiate may find themselves fighting in a unit with marines they have already heard tales about as a tribal member.

The Grim Wolves armour is coloured a dark grey and is often extensively customised to reflect the individual marine. This is done by using totems, animal pelts and icons to help a Grim Wolf 'channel' that animals spirit of characteristics. The chapter symbol is a black howling wolf against a white moon. It can be noted that the Grim Wolves seem to have an affinity for other chapters named after animals (as in keeping with their belief system) as well as other tribal based chapters and over countless campaigns have forged friendships with several other first founding chapters, such as the Raven Guard. It can be noted though, that due to their nature, they do not seem to get along with some of the more 'codex adhereing' chapters such as the Ultramarines and are especially wary of Blood Angel successor chapters (after witnessing some marines succumb to the Red Thirst, thus branding them 'vampires' in the eyes of the Grim Wolves).

I hate to be a jerk ...but, I swear I've heard about these guys before. But they were from a planet called Fenrip, or Fenger, Fengle, fen something. Darn I just can't remember the name of that planet.

sorry to ruin your own parade by telling the planet name.I believed the planet that you are mentioning is called, well, Fenris or something along this line. ;)

Well anyway if I remember correctly, I think you posted an exact, if not similar, to the same post you did on this forum.

If my memory serves me correctly, i believe he did a post on this forum by the same title and same concept as well. In a sense, i think he is reposting what he already posted which could have been lost in this forum.

Hi guys, yeah, it is a bit of a repost with a bit added at the end to expand on the unit organisation and colour scheme. I put it up as my old post seems to have got a bit 'lost in the warp', lol! Just wanted to put the post up to 'secure' the name as well as set the grounding for when i put up some pics of the models.

As for the 'fenris' comment, i know there are some similarities to the space wolves, but i was advised not to mention them in my background (to stop people going "Oh, but there are no space wolf successor chapters, BURN THE HERETIC!"). Ill admit, i have used the space wolf sprue to base my models on (be a bit daft to try to reinvent the wheel and make models from scratch), but i have made a point of excluding the more 'extreme' hair styles, etc. to give a darker, more 'no stupid mohican' nonsense as well as a gernerally more subdued paint scheme and colour palette (hopefully this comes across when i finish the models and post some pics)

I think there's a chapter that uses lots of wolf iconography and vikingisms... can't remember who though...

I think that with around 1,000 different space marine chapters, i think its fair to say there may be one or two that are not dissimilar. Rumours are that within the loyalists there is a few chapters that uses a fist icon and bill themselves as the 'most loyal and dedicated' of the space marines, and even one or two chapter that are based on being flawed angels too! Thankfully though, there arent any chapters that base their symbolism and belief systems on scary, real and mythological animals, oh, wait............lol :)

As for the 'fenris' comment, i know there are some similarities to the space wolves, but...

What are you talking about?

Your Chapter is carbon copy of Space Wolves. You just need Bjorn the Fell-Handed and it will be perfect.

Really, man. It's jsut silly to reinvent the wheel and people are going to laugh at you...
