IQ's Winter Advance WIP

Recommended Posts

So, with a smidge over a week to complete my vow, I finally started. My commissions have taken me to the edge, which I kind of anticipated. Hopefully I'll get done, and not miss out on yet another cool little gribbly.

Anyway, pics! The grey armor is done, freehanded and weathered and I've based the cables, soft joints, and bear/wolf pelts. I'm trying not to go overboard with this guy, as he spends 95% of his time safe in a land raider playing with adverse weather conditions.

I'm thinking of adding a little something on the helmet, maybe some red tooth jags below the eyes or something, not sure yet.

i have to ask though, is it just the angle or do those wolf tails make that wolf skull on his runic weapon look like a goat skull?

must say I had to do a double-take after reading this and suddenly OMG it's true - he wields the evil demon staff mwuahaha

but seriously it does look really really good :) can't wait to see him painted up some more ;)

Now that's something making me want to paint.

How's your weathering done? Looking amazing already.

VMC German Grey sponged on, Boltgun metal painted within, and the lower part of the chip gets an edge highlight with my highlight color.

ooh, i like him! especially with that maximus helmet!

I just don't see it... must be the angle and everything being one color.

It's the TDA Njal's staff.

I like the direction taken with the Mk. IV helm and Njal's staff, I feel like the psychic hood is way too big, like it's been scaled-up but the rest of the model hasn't been compensated. :tu:

I completely disagree. Shrinking the hood even a little bit will immediately start to conflict with the helm's mobility. It probably just looks too big b/c of the pelt draped over it. I'm inclined to wait til it's further painted.

I think what is making you think that the hood is too big is the angle of the shot + direction of the head / body / furs / action is pointing to the left; so the contrast of the very straight left bottom lip of the hood makes the gap seem a lot larger. I think if we saw a straight shot corresponding to the legs we could distinguish just how much change is needed.

My sneaking suspicion is that it is on the outer side of that power cable below it rather than in the inner edge more.

I think the top of the left hand guard where it connects to the arm might need a bit of a bulking up but again that could just be the angle of the shot.

I really like how this psycher combines what i'd expect a salamander librarian and a rune priest to be like. Keep up the good work!

In retrospect, the hood is a hair bigger than it should be, but only over on the right side; it's slightly on the wrong side of the cable coupling. The overall size is exacerbated by the bear hood. Can't really win with the hands; the right one is too big, the left too small, but I found that in some spots, the original sculptor really dropped the ball on the anatomy, which made it hard for me to really match hands from other kits to the model.

Little details, but enough that I wouldn't want to put this in a competition. He'll do nicely for my army, though. :)

Alright update time! At this point, it's mostly little gribblies to paint, and then the bone parts, eyes, and the steel parts.

I've deviated from what I've done in the past with the bronze verdigris, in that the larger areas, namely the wolf heads on the backpack and the shaft of the Runic Staff, were done by starting with my deepest verdigris and sponging on the layers up to the cleanest bronze.

Depends which one;

For the Gold Runes: Base Calthan Brown, highlight by mixing in Vomit Brown up to pure Vomit Brown, final with 1:1 VB and Bleached Bone.

For the Yellow Company Emblem: Base Tausept Ochre, highlight by mixing in Iyanden Darksun up to pure ID, mix in some VMC Beige for the final highlight.

On both I go back in at the end and line some of the edge very thinly with Burnt Umber, to give it a little bit of pop against the grey armor, which has a natural tendency to muddle freehand that is laid on top of it.

@ BR: Sorry you don't like the hood, I really just needed something to put the bear head on, and wanted to do my own "wolfy" Sevrin Loth anyway, so it worked out at the time.

Don't get me wrong. The implementation of it is awesome as you did make it flow into the model perfectly. The fluff part of me doesn't like it...lol.

Wyglaf Stormweaver is complete... Finally. I've had this model built and ready to paint since March of last year, and just never got to it.

He has actually had a pretty Wardian career; in his younger years, he successfully ambushed and slew an Avatar of Khaine in personal combat, and has laid low half a dozen Greater Daemons of Chaos, as well as a crowning moment of luck when he sent a Daemon Prince of Slaanesh to his demise, swallowed into the very jaws of the World Wolf.

In his older years, he's been an invaluable advisor to the Wolf Lord Bran Solfang, and uses his powers in more of a support role. This hasn't stopped him from racking up a sizable list of kills; his mastery of weather has sent many Stormravens plummeting to the ground, and in one case, put a quick end to a Dark Eldar planetary invasion, when he summoned up a Tempest that sent the foul Archon's Tantalus craft crashing to the ground, killing him and his concubine of Wyches instantly, and prematurely ending what had promised to be a grueling war.

I always need votes on CMON, so here he is. http://www.coolminiornot.com/299894

Sadly, I've got to take a bit of a hiatus from this particular board; my competition pieces this year ended up not being SW, and one of them isn't even 40k. If you want to follow along anyway, since I promise the stuff will still be cool, I'll be detailing my progress on my blog. http://drownedinplastic.blogspot.com/

After that, my plan is to really get in gear and get 2000 points of my wolves done.

Awesome work again mate! Are you willing to share tips on how you did the 'falling snow' on him Iacton? I love that effect, but have no idea how to go about it.

Seconded.

Thanks for getting back to me on the freehand work, as I reward I will give you a good score on CMON...lol

For the snow, I just dip my brush in some matt varnish, dip it in a pile of Woodland Scenics snow, and run the brush along where I want snow. After that, I just seal it in place with spray sealer. (run mine through an airbrush, as the thickness of an aerosol spray tends to muck up the flakes)

Thanks! Actually, yeah I did a long WIP thread here almost a year ago. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...hl=iacton+qruze

I don't have WIP shots of the building process, but the first post shows the claw before being primed, so you can see what's what.
