helping a friend make a special character

my friend and I have been working on making a special character for his black Templar army. He's new to the game and cant stop making up new rules and special characters... Ive been patient as I want him to enjoy his games, but am having a hard time convincing him of sticking closer to the codex. My rant over... :/ i need help deciding how many points this character should be and maybe some analysis of the character in general. I would really appreciate anyone who can give some insight into how to make this guy balanced.

for 250 points.

ws(7) bs (6) str(5) t(5) w(4) a(4) i(4) ld(10) sv 2+/5++ (3++cc)

gear: Relic-blade, storm-shield, terminator armor, bionics.

special rules: Independent character, eternal warrior, fearless., hits AV targets as if he were a monstrous creature.

he is adamant that 250 points is too much... but i don't think so. Can anyone tell me if I am right about the point cost or if i am wrong. I want him to have fun but its no fun for me if he has the god emperor incarnate fighting on his side for 165 points.... lol. Personally i think this guy is op at 250 points, but he seems like a lot of fun too.

am i being a 40knazi???

250 sounds good. He looks like more of a beast than Draigo or Calgar...

shouldnt that be a bad thing? if he's more powerfull than an equal point character... that usually is more or less what unbalanced means

to be honest, this seems abit on the rediculous side... it seems abit like "well, this would normally be a weakness, so ill just give him something that solves that, while being impossible to kill"

the idea of having W4, T5, eternal warrior, bionics, TDA and a stormshield is waay over the top... i could get into the idea (though if boiled down slightly) if the role for this character would be to simply be tough as nails... but his "kill everything"-sword and 4 attacks points to otherwise

now, since this is C&C, here comes the constructive part:

250 points.

ws(7) bs (6) str(4) t(4) w(3) a(3) i(4) ld(10) sv 2+/5++

gear: Master crafted Relic-blade, Iron halo, terminator armor, bionics, Arm mounted combi melta

special rules: Independent character, eternal warrior, fearless.

essentially, he still does all the same stuff, but more reasonable, he can threaten a tank with the one-shot melta and high BS (rather than utterly anihilate anything on wheels due to S6+2d6 pen in CC), he is still rediculously tough, but more reasonable so with a 4++ save, W3 and T4 (like marines should have), and he still packs a lethal punch in CC with WS7 and 4 S6 power weapon attacks on the charge at fill Ini (also able to kill light vehicles)

so well, take or leave it, but this boiled down version should actually be abit more fun, since it will require abit of actual tactical thinking, not just batting everything that moves with a sharp steel club while having god-mode activated

(sorry if sounding overly critical... i dont intent to be offensive)

thanks for the input. I agree on all fronts so far. 250 is cheap for the stat line i proposed, but the one you, Carnosaur put up looks much better. He has this character modeled with a big shield though.. maybe it will be his equivalent of a iron halo. maybe a one shot melta gun from the sword instead of the combimelta?

ohh... if he is allready modeled... well, exhange combimelta and iron-halo for stormshield and add 10pts to the cost, that should be reasonable ;) ...even if slightly on the bland side (i allways lowed the idea of tactical termies, they just seem so much more elite-like, where pure assaults seems like berzerkers)

:edit: if his shield and defence is to be focus for the character. i would recommend going for:

250 points.

ws(7) bs (6) str(5) t(4) w(3) a(4) i(4) ld(10) sv 2+/5++

gear: Master-crafted power-weapon, Terminator armor, bionics, "Storm shield of +1 charge-attack", frag granades

special rules: Independent character, eternal warrior, fearless.

notice the S5, power SWORD and granades... so you trade 1 strength (meaning no more ID to T3) for: initial attacks (6 on charge), bringing something to terminators that they do not usually have (granades), and a strong theme of defence and charging (even into terrain)... them templars love to charge...

now this is starting to look like an interesting CC terminator :P

As long as we're suggesting changes, I would also mention that along with toning down the statline giving him some more flavorful rules wouldn't hurt.

Right now, all he really does is personally kill things with impressive efficiency. Compare him to someone like Draigo or Calgar, who not only has a nice statline, but also comes with some nice and flavorful rules that have an impact on how your entire army works. Draigo gives you Paladin astroops and normal Grandmaster buffs; Calgar makes your entire army super-Fearless and lets you take lots of Honour Guard, etc. This guy does nothing but hit things with a sword.

In that light, I don't think the suggested statline is that unreasonable for his price. He's basically got Draigo's statline (except with lower initiative), except without any of the handy army-wide benefits or neat special rules that Draigo gets.

hers my idea so far (still very openn to ideas) thanks for all the posts guys! really helps.

ws(7) bs (5) str(4) t(4) w(4) a(3) i(4) ld(10) sv 2+/5++

gear: Master crafted Relic-blade w/ (rending?) one shot melta, Iron halo (its a big shield), terminator armor, bionics, frag grenades.

special rules: Independent character, eternal warrior, fearless, Rites of battle, terminatos Honors.

Its a black templar character from what i read, so in that case any mention of terminator honours can be removed, those are autoinclude in that terminator armour of his.

As for poinst cost (for the stuff thats available in the BT codex), you should start at: 192, (ignoring the fact that you cant take ironhalo and Tda together in the bt codex) that leaves eternal warrior and relic blade out atm.

But codex SW and codex SM have those items/ options for: 65 points

Total right now: 257

That only leaves the increased statts, fearless (they already are in close combat) and the rending part on his relic blade.

Sugestion:

Ws:6 BS:5 S:4 T:4 W:4 I:5 A:4 Ld:10 Sv:2+/3++ points: 250

Wargear: terminator armour (bonus attack for terminator honours included in profile), Sword of Masters*, stormshield, combimelta, bionics, Crusader zeals

Sword of masters: a master crafted powerweapon that adds +1 strength to its user, furthermore it counts as rending vs vehicles.

Options: may take any of the Veteran skills for free when he is taken with a command squad.

Special: rites of battle, independent character, eternal warrior

Great ideas Spacefrisian! Thanks for the input. I don't think my friends wants a "gun" on his model (as he's already made it) so he may keep the single use melta in the sword profile, (maybe he can use his sword once per game as a 12" str8 rending lance weapon( or just melta LOL))
