SW modeling against the grain...

Grimtooth

So I have been thinking about my current SW army and my modeling.

I realize that every iteration of my army has started out with a general plan but then deviates as either patience wears thin (wanting to game) or tim grows short (rushing to finish before a tourney). At the end I am always left wanting of the things I wanted to do or things that I should have done. Tossing some ideas out here for some brainstorming,

1. Grey Hunters with bolters and close combat weapons stowed.

I actually started to model this on a couple of my Grey Hunters and posted up some pictures here on the boards. While the new SW box has a huge plethora of arms, chainswords, bolt pistols, and bolters; I almost look at some of my models as being too "busy" in poses. I am starting to be more drawn to the Grey Hunter with bolter at port arms and the close combat weapon stowed away. I can't think of the look that it portrays to me, but will let you decide.

2. Blood Claws the opposite of above, with exceptions.

In every instance of Blood Claws they are moving, running, eating, sleeping, etc, etc with their bolt pistol and close combat weapon. However, has there not been fluff written of Blood Claws facing a superior opponent and going two-handed? My old Blood Claw pack had zero character and I think a two-handed grip with bolt pistol stowed would be the beginning to start adding character to the pack. At a loss as to what else to add.

3. Vehicle markings, inadequate!

I originally just wanted pack rune markings on my transports to align them with the cooresponding pack. However, my vehicles are lacking character as well. I wouldn't go as far to make murals, but I am going to have to work on making some plasticard runes and wolf symbols to add to my vehicles as I am not happy with what is available from GW/FW/the market.

Summary:

I think I am just not happy with my army again and looking for ways to improve or start over. Thoughts/comments?

Art is always part inspiration, part perspiration. The percentages tend to vary, per person.

I think doing something that you find rewarding should always come first. I have recently been replacing my old third edition plastic PA models with the new fifth edition ones, and what I ran across was that even with all the character the bits themselves have, there will be repeats as far as bit combinations go. Doing something close to what Mav has done would be daunting as I don't have anywhere near the bits range available. I recently did a pack of GH's with BP and CCW held, with BG's maglocked onto their backs. I like them the most of all my GH's, so not sure how to proceed from here.

I must support your idea, as to make the Vlka Fenryka as you see them is to make them right, at least to you, and that is the most important thing of all.

There's some good ideas there Ramses. I particularly like the idea of some BCs wielding their chainswords 2 handed. That's a really nice touch. All my BC have the running legs from the assault marine box too, just to emphasise their 'charging headlong into stuff' nature, but they're pretty plain other than that so I sympathise.

I've used the same idea with my GH - they're CCW are knives that are stored on their belts/lower legs. I didn't want to see 100 chainswords on the board in front of me when I played and it helps me easily tell the difference between my GH and BC at a glance. All my GH, bar those with special wargear all carry the bolters 2 handed, as I just didn't like the one handed grip arms in the pack box. Granted a few people might think it's a bit dull, but with a few head swaps, talismans and pelts, they dont just look like grey ultramorons. I managed to make an old Battle for Macragge plastic squad look alright with the addition of a few heads, tail talismans and backpack swaps. The poses aren't great, but they look 'wolfy' enough.

Another idea I'll move onto once my Lone Wolves are done - I noticed in the SW novels that there usually seems to be an alpha (for lack of a better term) or squad leader in each pack. He's the same rank, but I've seen it mentioned a few times. With the 6th ed rumours flying about, I was inspired to make some more individualistic guys for each pack, just to stand out as a squad leader for something a bit different. Also, if the rumours are true, I'm already set!

Just a quick question: That GH has an axe - where's it from? I've only used the sheathed knives from the SW frames so far and something else might be nice on a few guys.

The axe is from one of the Fantasy Dwarf boxes. I cannot remember which one it is as I bought a whole mess of them at a LFGS merchant swap meet weekend by clipping them off the sprues.

I don't think I would mind the one-handed bolter grip on my standard bearer, but I think I might be done with the bolter/ccw poses. Probably even add one to my powerfist Grey Hunters as well. As for the power weapon Grey Hunter, he might be going two-handed or bolter/power weapon.

I agree Brother Ramses... since my first squad of Grey Hunters, I've been adding bits to give variety to the poses. I always mix and match the poses in a squad: some have bolter and chainsword, or bolter and a "throwback" CCW, sometimes one will have a bolt pistol, and some will have the 2-handed bolter grip but I have put "stowed" CCW's on them. I highly recommend the Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Marauder Horsemen box. It's fairly cheap (I think it was $20 or $25 at my LGS) and it has loads of good SW bits. Lots of axes with hands (that you can swap out on the chainsword arms) as well as "loose" weapons like axes and spears that I use as "stowed" CCW's. I've also really enjoyed using the heads as variety on my models. I've "harvested" pretty much every bit that was in that box, so it was well worth the money.

Here's my "stowed" CCW guys:

Here are some with axes instead of chainswords:

I also used the super-cool flail (along with the axes) for my Mark of the Wulfen models. They have been popular among my local group:

As if all of that wasn't enough, the banner that you get in the box makes a great Wolf Standard conversion... and the whole box is cheaper than the one Wolf Standard model from GW:
