10 Things About Your Marines We Should Know

CKO

Recommended Posts

OK, guys.

Ten things about the average marine in your chapter does not mean ten things about your chapter. It means ten things about the AVERAGE MARINE IN YOUR CHAPTER.

When your chapter was founded, why they use the colors they do and their location are NOT things about the average marine in your chapter.

In my defence, I'd forgotten to do any of that 'sleeping' I hear so much about as a cure for tiredness.

To my surprise, it actually works.

Anyway. I've edited my prevous post to be a bit more relevant.

Only a bit though.

EDIT EDIT:

Now I've edited this post to be a bit less typo-riddled.

This is a challenge to anyone who has their own Chapter, I want you to tell us ten things [unique to the] average marine in your chapter!

I get, where you coming from just... Isn't this a oxymoron? -> How could be a average marine unique? :)

*cough* Joking aside.

The average marine from a Chapter that may come to be known as one of the following three names:

Brazen Falcons

Brazen Consuls

Brazen Paladins

1. Believes that the Ork is closer to a Pig than to a Man.

2. Respects the history of the Eldar, but will joyfully consign them to history nonetheless.

3. Would be honoured to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Salamanders no matter at what cost.

4. Is disgusted by the cannibalistic tendencies of the Blood Angels and their successors.

5. Values discipline and self-control on the battlefield over vainglorious or foolhardy conduct.

9. Despises the ignorance and brutishness of many Marine Chapters.

10. Secretly hopes to one day bring down the superstitious, meddling Inquisition and its fear-mongering, puritanical agents.

  • 1 month later...

I was planning to do this much earlier but RL got on me. As for the Promethean Fists(sons of the Salamanders):

1. will always wade through the storm of fire

2. don't know the meaning of the word "retreat"

3. Constantly "improves" their armor

4. improvises

The average Nemesis Angel:

- can finish his squad-mates' sentences.

- prefers his meat extra rare.

- loves to fly.

- wants to get stuck in.

- lives for revenge.

- practices a unique execution technique.

- meditates on controlling the Flaw.

- thanks Sanguinius for his strength and nobility.

- prefers 12-round bolt-pistol magazines.

- thinks red is gauche.

Malice whispers

6. Will leave behind those that fall out of their favor.

7. Remain loyal to the leader of the day.

8. Find the weakness in all the enemies works

9. Never celebrate the victory till you have escaped the enemies rebuttal

10. fear the Undoer's hungry eyes

10 things about my marines huh? Well this is more like a subsection of the chapter but that should be good enough.

These are the beliefs of the...

Crusaders of the Knights Templar

1 - Granting traitors the peace of death is too merciful. Annihilation is the only option.

2 - Only in melee can one be sure their enemy has truly been destroyed.

3 - Better to retreat then to die.

4 - Better to use cunning and strength of arms to win then to retreat.

5 - Traitors do not deserve time to reflect on their actions. Annihilation is all that awaits them.

6 - Rage in battle is the way of beasts and madmen.

7 - Only by remembering the great deeds of heroes can we truly bring honor to their actions.

8 - Faith makes us strong. Blind and unquestioning faith makes us weak.

9 - The death of a brother will be repaid a hundredfold.

10 - Duty to the Emperor and the Chapter never truly ends.

Wow, that was harder then I thought. Might do a few for some characters I've made rules for.

Your everage Phoenix Knight:

- is flexible and adaptable

- is overly-cautious

- holds duty to humanity over all else

- is humanitarian (but not to the point he'll jeopardize the mission)

- is borderline here-tek

- is borderline heretic

- is more knowledgable in tech mantainance and first aid than everage

- has better regeneration than an average mairne

- has a kinder view on Eldar than other marines

- highly respects the Imperial Guard

- thinks fire is awesome

- thinks diplomacy is often the most practical solution

- belives that kowledge is power, and power must be shared between battle-brothers

- believes that the power of faith and technology can save the imperium

- belives one should always hold the initiative and dictate to the enemy the pace and terms of battle

- hates orks with the intensity of a thousand suns

A typical Supernovan, if such a thing exists...

  1. Is paternaturally fast - reacts faster than most Marines.
  2. Is typically slightly weaker than a normal Marine.
  3. Believes a single squad of Astartes is enough to handle most things, including conquering planets.
  4. Believes 'Scouts' should be trained individually, by a mentor.
  5. Wears lots of trinkets and talismans.
  6. Is armed with a bolter, bolt pistol and a close combat weapon.
  7. Prefers to fight in a 'Tactical' role.
  8. Avoids siege combat if possible.
  9. Is not averse to drink.
  10. Has a 1% of being female.

Ahem; moving swiftly back to the matter at hand (please, please, don't attract the attention of the Ordo B&C)

The average Starkiller

  1. Was born and raised aboard a Battle-barge; does not believe in the term 'down', and is never caught without armour or a voidsuit.
  2. Works very well in a group; doesn't trust heroes and demagogues.
  3. Can't decide if he loathes traitors or pirates more.
  4. Is a surly, taciturn, bastard...unless he is drunk
  5. The Codex A.? Well, it's more like guidelines than an actual code...
  6. Has no tolerance for fools; will execute them if they are in the way.
  7. Is a specialist at boarding and zero-gee operations. Can stretch to urban/hive warfare and orbital drops at a pinch.
  8. Owns ancient equipment held together by jury-rigging and hope (the Administratum has sort of forgotten that they exist...)
  9. Has no qualms about scavenging anything, from a bolter to a starship.
  10. Will defend civilians to the death.

I believe you don't mind I come with traitors

Space Rat

-thinks that self-preservance is the most necessary thing

-is self-sufficient at any cost

-betrayed the Emperor

-betrays one another if necessary

-loaths the Imperials

-performs daemonic rituals

-worships a daemon

-fights for loot and daemonic favor

-is paranoid

-enjoys killing helpless prey

It's not easy at all...

I got about halfway through that and thought "These are terrible! They're more like Chaos Marines than Imperials".

Then the penny dropped. :cuss

The thing I found hard about it was I thought about the Marines I've written about for the Supernovas, and within a single squad I had one Marine who didn't think it was 'proper' warfare if you weren't using a heavy weapon, another who was overprotective of his squad, and one who was spent every moment pre-battle cracking jokes. How exactly do you define a 'typical' Marine when you don't have one to begin with?

How exactly do you define a 'typical' Marine when you don't have one to begin with?

How do you define an Englishman, when there isn't a typical one to begin with? But people do.

Character is genetics, environment and upbringing. Upbringing is partially heritable, environment and genetics, in this case, shared. The characters will also be derived from your own experiance, at least subconsciously, so there should be some similarities.

Look at the big picture, not the details.

The typical Bright Lord is:

1. Acutely aware of his own flaws and failings, but takes heart from the knowledge that since he knows them, with the Emperor's grace he can work to correct them, and thereby gain in might and glory.

2. Both unaware and uncaring of the source of his gene-seed. All Primarchs are his foster-fathers and spiritual role models, though he is likely to think of Dorn or another personal favorite as first amongst equals.

3. Deeply respectful of the lives of common citizentry, and especially the Imperial Guard and the Chapter's Serfs. He himself is a space marine, purpose-forged into the deadliest, toughest weapon humanity can be made into, and still the galaxy's horrors test his might; Guardsmen have none of this, yet they bravely fight the same foes regardless, and for that they deserve nothing less than his greatest esteem.

4. Motivated by the Absolute Certainty that he has been granted superhuman might in order to safeguard and uplift Mankind against its enemies. To lose sight of the common man's salvation in the pursuit of destroying the Emperor's foes is to betray a Space Marine's founding purpose.

5. Of the firm belief that his knightly code will lead him to glory and righteousness in the Emperor's cause.

6. Certain in the knowledge that Mankind's rightful place is one of ascendancy over the Alien- but that where it is possible to deal with the threat from one group of Xenos without main force, so that force of arms can be focused on another, greater threat, it is only good sense to do so.

7. Believes that it is his sacred duty to help the Chapter reclaim lost relics and technology- and that much of this reclaimed knowledge is better kept restricted to properly sanctioned Astartes, not mortal men.

8. Especially not so-called men only too eager to give up their blessed human virtues in favor of the Machine. That way lies the vile Iron Men of lore.

9. Of the opinion that the Dark Eldar are particularly vile and abhorrent amongst the xenos races, to be exterminated without hesitation wherever they are found. His purpose is to defend the weak and helpless, and it is at the weak and helpless that Dark Eldar most love to strike.

10. Believes that as the Emperor's grace allows forgiveness of his faults such that he may overcome them and become a better servant of Mankind, so too must he strive for a measure of patience with the flaws he sees in the other Imperials around him.

Typical Knightwatch Tactical Marine:

- Dyes himself dark blue before battle.

- Fixes his combat knife as a bayonet on his bolter rather than carrying it separately.

- Bolter drill and teamwork are his pillars, but when the enemy is foolish enough to get close, gets stuck in with melee.

- Has probably been in the Deathwatch once or is due for service with it soon.

- Has two names: his birth name from the homeworld and a Gothic version of his birth name.

- Hates Chaos for killing one of his two homeworlds and the first Chapter Master.

- Believes that the Codex Astartes is something to be considered, not to be followed.

- Reveres Orar and various other heroes of the Imperium from the past.

- Best chums are several other Space Marine Chapters (with similar beliefs) and is on great terms with the Inquisition.

- Doesn't like the Ultramarines due to the Gammorin Incident (detailed in soon-to-be IA) and has crossed blades with several other Chapters - dislikes bureaucracy.

- Enjoys a cup of tea and a bacon crumpet, after morning session of croquet and punching practice servitors.

For my chapter, the Warbringers, an Iron Hands successor. IA article still in the works, and even the name is subject to change, but the beliefs of the typical marine will not. :)

The typical Warbringer:

-Believes in Firepower foremost, but recognizes the need to occupy the enemy's position eventually.

-Can repair most minor damage to his equipment and is free to make changes to his armor as he believes necessary.

-Prefers a chain-feed to a magazine as it allows for a higher sustained rate of fire.

-Honors the Iron Hands as his primogenitor chapter, but feels that their use of bionics in an attempt to exorcise their humanity is misguided.

-Desires to wear a suit of the Chapter's "Mk 9" armor and wield the advanced capabilities it possesses.

-Wants to fight the Tau more often as their advanced weaponry impresses him.

-Prefers to drop by pod, rather than Thunder Hawk or Storm Raven, but does not mind their fire support in battle.

-Believes marines from other chapters go into battle dangerously low on ammo, as most only carry the magazine in their weapon.

-Sees the Ultramarines as incredibly arrogant but honorable brothers. However, he doesn't wish he was one of them.

-Finds the sight of Chapter Master Guyvan's Dreadnought awe inspiring.
