henrywalker
Ok, so i always loved space wolves and whenever i thought i was going to start i'd go and try and find some way to make the cavalry and i always gave up. Now i can finally have a proper go at them i'm going to do it properly and get the army piecemeal instead of buying a big ol' lump of sprue and rushing the whole thing. I love the wolves because of their character and individuality and i reckon going a unit at a time is the best way to get this. i was wondering what you guys would say are the best units to start modelling and painting in order to get the feel of the army? i have inherited a logan grimnar finecast and i'm debating whether or not i should leave him until i have a better idea of the army. also are there any paint schemes, methods or tips you guys would recommend? i'm a decent painter but i find its always great to listen to experience cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248043-about-to-take-the-plunge/ Share on other sites
Khine
First an foremost i would decide on a base army list you want to make. ask your questions like .. How big of a game am i going to play? what tactical style will i be using? Then go with how you want your Wolves too look like. Do you want them to be how they appear in the codex? do you want them to be pre-heresy? do you want to go the way of using the great cloaks from Chaos warriors? Is there a specific Wolf lord ( past or present ) that inspires you? Do you want to give it your own flavour? Typically though, most go with a pack of Grey hunters or blood claws. Still very important to go with the above steps first, will add far more character to your force. Good Luck and welcome to the Fang Brother! -Passes over some ale- Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248043-about-to-take-the-plunge/#findComment-3004065 Share on other sites
henrywalker
haha, thanks for the beer ;) i think you are right that i should look into lords and theme around one of them. Other than the codex lords i there any literature that you would recommend that contains them? Wulfebane
Asking for painting tips/suggestions will just turn this thread into another grey-grey versus blue-grey debate (of which this thread has plenty of) and I doubt you'll want it to go that route. I would recommend just going through our SW gallery and FAQ pages, select a scheme you prefer, then direct tips/suggestions toward achieving that scheme. Two model units that are widely considered one of, if not THE, best units for their category are the Rune Priest and Grey Hunters and I feel both capture the essence on Space Wolf... at least for me. In truth it'd be hard to isolate iconic SW models as I can't think of any that aren't perfectly suited to the feel of SW fluff, except the land speeders and tanks. Other factions prefer wolf lords of their own DIY variety, etc etc. All Space Wolf models, whether an HQ or Troop unit, have a tremendous amount of character, so it boils down to play style. Aside from my RP/GH recommendation, the new TWC sculpts have a great deal of ferocity and dynamic motion which imbue the feel of raw SW grit that you'd be hardpressed to match elsewhere. Forté
Have a good read over the 'Great Company' descriptions too as this may spark something for how you want your wolves to be. Brother Crazywolf
Personally I would save Logan until you have a better feeing on what direction you want to take things. I agree that the grey hunters and rune priests capture things quite well. Model wise I would go out and see what others have done that appeals to you and then. Put your own spin on that concept. I am slowly doing much the same as you and I think I have just now started to get a decent feel for what I am doing 2 packs later and many more to assemble, magnetize, and paint. So I feel your pain. I recently started seriously considering some of the chaos mauraders and the like from the fantasy line to add spice and variety thanks to some of the threads here. And welcome to the Fang!
