Most interesting traitor legion to see modeled Pre-Heresy?

hey all,

I was just looking through the WIP forum and came across a few pre-heresy traitor marines which got me thinking, What do you think is the most interesting traitor legion to see modeled pre-heresy?

My vote goes for the Thousand Sons and the World Eaters. Now I have several reasons for that:

1. Their color schemes are completely different, and to add to that they are awesome schemes! I get why the traitor legions have the schemes they do post heresy, better reflects their gods, etc, but I think both of their color schemes pre-heresy are rather striking. Especially the World Eaters, there's nothing like a well painted pre-heresy WE force.

2. Their "attitude" or personality are different to their post-heresy counter parts. I really like the noble warrior bordering on psychopath thing that the WE have going on. It adds a lot more depth to them and makes their fall into madness even more sad. Seeing a marine modeled up all noble, but splattered with blood, very WE and also very representational of Space Marines in general. I guarantee you 80% of the time most marines are covered head to toe in blood while on the battlefield. The Thousand Sons are still the mystics but with a more subtle and convincing Egyptian theme going on. They also seem a lot more individual and this usually comes across in a well done force.

Most of the other traitor legions are pretty similar to how they were pre-heresy or have been done to death, such as the Death Guard, Luna Wolves and Emperor's Children. While still interesting pre-heresy armies I feel like their personalities are a little to bland and generic Space Marine. If I had to pick a third contender for most interesting pre-heresy traitor army to see on the table top it would be the Sons of Horus. I have seen several people attempt them but only one or two who really nailed down that odd sea green color.

What are your thoughts?

Well, my first vote has to go to the sons of Magnus :P

You've got a good point with the World Eaters, Nurgling6688. The blue and white (blood-drenched) is really striking.

One I would really like to see is the Word Bearers. I painted up a combat squad of pre-Heresy ones when I first got back into the hobby and made a pig's ear of them (trying to cover them in tiny scribbling text). I would love to see them done well. A good, granite-grey, well done inscriptions, festooned with oaths and seals. Fire and brimstone. Carrying/erecting icons of the Emperor, etc.

I've just started a pre heresy army and my initial armies of choice were

Ultramarines (just read know no fear)

World Eaters

Thousand sons

I loved the blue and gold of the ultramarines and how they work with the imperial army as a whole (for a possible apoc expansion)

World eaters colours were also facinating and FW makes those lovely chian axes

Thousand sons have their mystic side and the spire guard (again for APOC)

In the end I rejected them all

Ultramarines for being ultramarines. There are just too many of them. even in a deep blue and gold they are part of a largercrowd

World eaters didn't seem like a legion that used the imperial army and this is something I want to include in the future

Thousand sons for their drab armour. I am not a great painter and just red doesn't do it for me.

In the end I settled on the Emperor's Children. Gold and purple are good colours. I can have imperial army units (so the EC can show them how it is done). I am a slaaneshi player at heart.

Since ordering the parts I have decided to scale back my plans to a 1K zone mortalis list, so I might switch back to world eaters, but I am afraid of the white armour, so hard to get right.

For me it has to be the Thousand Sons. Any other pre-heresy army, whilst looking really cool is really just another marine army wth lots of older armour marks and a cool colour scheme. With the thousand sons however, not only do you get the awesome colour scheme but the awesome Egyptian vibe, plus the chance to create an army of psykers. They're totally different to any other marine army.

the Death Guard gets my vote.

they are forever corrupted into walking pus filled power armor, taking up damage that would down a platoon of ogryns, and emerging as silent as death while leaking more pus and smoke.

WLK

My vote would be for the Thousand Sons. I'm sure they're out there, but they're the ones I see the least done in Pre-Heresy garb. Personally, my favorite is a toss-up between them and the Sons of Horus. Sea-green, black trim, Eye of Horus on the pauldron. Looks beautiful.

plus the chance to create an army of psykers. They're totally different to any other marine army.

Grey Knights?

Gonna pitch another vote for Pre-Heresy Word Bearers. The grey armour coverend in scripture is an awesome mental image, and their old symbol (the burning book) kicked more butt than a three legged ninja. C'mon, just look at this guy, he's friggin awesome.

I would do several unspeakably evil things to see someone actually paint a full 1500 pt Pre-Monarchia era Word Bearers army.

For me it would have to be the Night Lords. There fall into corruption is a tragic one curze did everything for all the right reasons but fell to madness in the end.

Plus the clean terror marked NL are cool to see compared to there skull and fetish adorned post hearsay brothers.

I definitely like the World Eaters original color scheme. I'm always tempted to make a "Pre-Heresy" World Eaters army. But the WE are such a boring, one dimensional group of cardstock villains, at least the way they've been thus far portrayed, that I can't get motivated to make an army I am not interested in the character of.
i vote Thousand Sons as well. They actually have unique armor, with scarab icons all over the place, i feel that with some paint and a forgeworld mkiv or mkiii armor kit you could pretty much get an accurate portrayal of the other preheresy legions.

Thousand Sons, without question.

Night Lords, Emperor's Children, Word Bearers and World Eaters would be interesting, sure. But most pre-heresy armour was standard with paintwork, sheen and small details being the only differences. Only after turning to Chaos did most Traitor Legions' armour become elaborate and unique.

My vote goes to my favorite Legion the Sons of Horus (it's been a long time since the first three books that they had a story only about them).

Alo my second favorite are the Alpha Legion and I think they can be fleshed out a bit more, World Eaters would also be very nice to read some more about :)

If I were to ever do a pre heresy force, it would proberbly be either Thousand sons or Salamanders, mostly Mk4 armour with some II and III for the former and mostly beakie with some MksII-IV for the latter.

Great, now I am thinking of doing a pre heresy or salamanders kill team....

I simply MUST see a custom model of Sigismund and the Imperial fists veteran company's!!!

There are a few about. One on my desk in fact :P

I would like to see a Pre-Heresy Luna Wolves army! One of my most favoured colour schemes and I really like their iconography and seeing Horus in all his loyalist glory.

I can't really choose as i am a HH fanboy at heart... So i guess i kinda made my peace with the thought that eventually i will paint miniatures/armies of all the Traitor Legions in Pre Heresy colours. So far i have:

Emperor's Children: army.

Iron Warriors: Single Mini.

Night Lords: Single Mini (will become army in the future).

World Eaters: WIP army.

Death Guard: WIP Single Mini.

Thousand Sons: WIP Single Mini.

Sons of Horus: WIP army.

Word Bearers: Single Mini.

Alpha Legion: WIP Single Mini.

Modelling wise, i think that the Thousand Sons are the best with their ornate armour and head crests. Even the most basic Marine can be converted to insane standards.

Cheers! :P

*snip*

Word Bearers: Single Mini.

:)

Sir, considering how friggin' awesome your pre-heresy Ultramarine is, I am now going to be forced to stalk you until at least one full squad of pre-heresy Word Bearers are complete.

Pfft. 'Single mini', indeed...

:P
