Best way to set up a Thunderwolf Lord?

Hi there; Younger brother is really into 40k all of a sudden with the release of the Thunderwolf Riders/Lord.

Was wondering the best way to set one up in regards to wargear, since some of the wording in the codex makes me iffy on kitting the lord out with power weapons and the like.

He was considering a lord with Saga of the Bear, Frostblade, Stormshield and Thunderwolf Mount for slapping around the combat-centric HQs that I and my friends like to run around with; I am unsure of this being a good idea.

any help would be appreciated.

The more reliable and efficient (though somewhat awkward-looking, imo) build is to give him a Storm Shield and Wolf Claw over a Frost weapon due to the rerolls, and Runic Armor and Saga of the Bear/Warrior Born to taste. You won't be losing out on much with the Frost weapon, however, and the sword-and-board look is a bit more fitting for my aesthetic.
Judging from the way it is written in the book: Doesn't the wolf lord lose his frost blade's + 1 str and power weapon armour ignore when he does that, though? Or is it just for the 1 attack he gains from being seated on the thunderwolf. In addition- does the rending apply to all of his attacks or just that 1 bonus from the twolf? I've never had to deal with a mount in 40k since I play Bangels. :/
I have been thinking about going fore belt of russ, frostblade, bolt pistol, runic armour and warrior borne. It seems like a good set up if a little bit uncommon. You would only get a 4++ save but also +1 attack to fuel you'r saga. Has any one tried it out?
Nope, his attacks would resolve at Strength 6 and ignore armor saves. You only get the benefit of Rending if you otherwise don't ignore armor saves; ie, if he just had a regular chainsword.
oh, alright. thank you

You have no idea how huge the can of worms for that TWC/rending rule is. Makes a bit more sense now though later on I admit. :D

And how to set up the Lord? It depends on his role.

Is he going to tank hunt? Then TH/SS or chainfist. Hell, dual fists for the +1 attack! Saga of the bear to keep him alive.

Is he going after heavy infantry? Then FW and either a gun or storm shield (belt of Russ gives you a slightly worse Inv. save than a SS but gives you that +1 attack for not taking one). Take melta bombs just in case. Saga of the Beastslayer for rerolls to hit Vs the big things.

Is he going to tear apart weak or standard infantry lines? Wolf Claw pair, just take them, really. Combine with Saga of the Warrior born for some scary stuff.

There's nothing wrong with it, honestly. It's like taking the Wolf Claw over the Frost Blade: is a single additional attack (on a model who gets more attacks for every model he kills anyway) worth it more than being able to save on 3s? That's the trade-off.

I'm a huge fan of Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf with Runic Armor (2+ is the new black, really??!!), Frost Blade (for the srt6 attacks), Storm Shield (because 2+/3+ makes him quite survivable), Wolf Tooth Necklace (hitting on 3's, yes please!!), a Thunderwolf (you kinda need that guy... :( ), Saga of the Bear/Warrior Born (I take Bear if hunting MC's and high T critters, Warrior is eating Troops), and 2 Fenrisian Wolves (Mo' attacks, Mo' wounds = MO' BETTA!!). He comes out costing about the same as the Old Wolf himself, but the guy is a scary powerhouse that makes your opponent stand up, notice, and freak the hell out!!

End of Line

By Math-hammer the WC is a better choice than the FB if you are taking a SS. If you're keeping the Pistol then go with the FB to keep the extra attack. If you're taking the SS, then the rerolls from the WC are better than the +1 STR. I understand if people like the FB for aesthetic reasons, though.

A Frost Blade does not only add +1 STR, it also adds:

+ +1 to pen vehicles, You'll penetrate AV 10 twice as often.

+ the ability to insta-kill T3 models. Important if you fight Scarabs (something TWC otherwise struggle with), St. Celestine, Eldar or Dark Eldar HQs

Wolf Claws are slightly better at killing T 3/4 models and are 5 pts. cheaper. That's about it.

Orphus,

The Chain Fist is not an option.

Valerian

I have had much success running mine as such -

Wolf Lord Gunnar Red Moon

...Belt of Russ

...Runic Armour

...Wolftooth Necklace

...Thunderwolf Mount

...Wolf Claw x2

...Saga of the Bear

...Fenrisian Wolves 2x

He's a lil pricey at 295pts, but he can lay down some serious damage. If you had to shave some points, you could lose the necklace and the wolves but I like having the extra wounds and always hitting on 3s. It is hard to beat 7 S5 power weapon attacks on the charge with a reroll
