Alternate Bloodclaw/Wolfguard Squad shoulder colors?

First off I want to apologize for the all of the little dumb questions I've been posting. I get great replies and help in this forum and don't want to wear out my welcome. Hopefully no one is getting sick of my questions. :)

I'm painting up my Blood Claws for my newly re-started Bran Redmaw Great Company and realized that I don't like the yellow/red shoulders for the Blood Claws or Ywllow Black Wolfguard. (I'm old enough to remember a band named Stryper. Yes. I saw them live. More than once. I'm not proud of the fact. The yellow / black screams that band to me. In a bad, bad way.) It just looks too circus clown for me with the white great company shoulder and the yellow squad shoulder and multiple squad members in a unit type. Anyway.... I was thinking of using red and black for the Grey Hunters and Blood Claws squads and then white and black for the Wolf Guard and Long Fangs as that looks stellar with the opposing White Great company shoulder.

But that leaves the Grey Hunters with a potentially confusing shoulder... Red Squad shouldered Grey Hunters along side the Blood Claws also red might be too confusing on the table. I was thinking of perhaps painting the Blood Claw's helmets and hands red in addition to the shoulder to differentiate them as the Blood Claw units.

Maybe a totally different style of packs stripe or chevron on the shoulders between the two units? One with small dags, and the other with large sweeping triangle stripes? That coupled with the red helmet/hands chain swords/Powerfists might be enough.

What do you think?

How I got around a similar issue was I picked a set of symbols to represent that unit type. It's somewhat an old SW 2nd ed convention, but it works, so it should also work when using similar color sets on different models.

Wolf's head = Grey Hunters

Wolf Claw = Blood Claws

Fanged Skull = Long Fangs

Wolf Skull and Knife = Wolf Guard

Maybe do it this way

Blood Claws = Grey back with red icon

Swift Claws = Grey back with black icon

Sky Claws = Pure red

Grey Hunter = Black back with red icon

Wolf Scouts = Leave it how it is in the codex

Long Fangs = Black with white icon

Wolf Guard = Pure Black or Cream with black icon or White with Red icon

I would go with the versions that alpharius mentioned. They should be in the colours that i mentioned if not you could just paint on geometry shapes, since im sure you have more than one of each squad types. The last page of the colour pages has good examples of the icons/geometry

I keep it even simpler. I paint my WG with a red shoulder pad, my GH with grey shoulder pads, and I don't run BC. I also notate the ranks by helmet color. WG I paint Space Wolf Grey, GH Codex Grey.

Keeps it simple for a novice painter like myself.

HAHA!! I've saw Stryper too!! Not my favorite show...

End of Line

I'm leaning towards the red helmet and red pad for the Blood Claws, Grey or Khaki for the Grey Hunters and White or White/Black combo for the Wolf Guard/Long Fangs. I painted a test model last night and liked the red on the Blood Claws.

But then I run nearly all of my wolves with helmets so it works for me. :)

You're going with Redmaw's company, why not take advantage of it?

I know they're featured in FW's latest IA book, but it's not like you absolutely have to follow their scheme, right?

I'd use the company mark on both shoulders, and denote rank with their helmets :

BC : grey, red faceplace

GH : grey, black faceplate

LF : grey, white faceplate

WG : black, red faceplate (Bran's company marking)

Or something along those lines maybe?

I was toying with that as well. But then what color do I make the squad shoulder? White like the Great Company shoulder?

I would most likely go with a mix of red, white and black (depending on rank) since those are the colors found on the other shoulder?

Maybe something along the lines of (Helmet / Pad):

Blood Claws : Grey&Red / Red&White

Grey Hunters : Grey&Black / Black&Red

Long fangs : Grey&White / Black&White

Wolf guard : Black&Red / Redmaw icon on both shoulders

So the Wolfguard show their alegience to the Lord by bearing his mark on each shoulder and on their helmet (although that might end up being a bit overwhelming?), the bulk of the force, the greyhunters, share the mark's colour - red and black - on the right pad, and the other two ranks have a different mix of colors to denote rank...

Hmm, the more I think about this the more I'm tempted to try it :P

Good advice, I'll play with some test models this weekend. Thanks!

If you're wanting to color those pad symbols, I'd use the convention shown with the Pad Runes in the color pages of the Codex.

Grey Hunters = Red Symbols

Blood Claws = Yellow Symbols

Long Fangs = White symbols

Wolf Guard = Black Symbols

Wolf Scouts = Black Symbols
