Erik Morkai

Wolfsbane

Recommended Posts

I know he's a Wolf Lord, but in my mind he would have Saga of the Hunter. It can only be taken by a WGBL, so I was just going to take the cut so I could have an infiltrating HQ. I'm not sure if there is any fiction out there that would help create this Lord. I was thinking either a frostblade/SS, two wolves, necklace, melta bombs, and maybe talisman.

For some reason, thinking of a WL as a WGBL just seems..off. Just because he has a high proportion of wolf scouts in great company doesn't mean that he himself would take on the stealthy role himself. In the codex in his GC description, he uses swift and bloody violent act. It almost makes me think of a drop pod army. That would still give him that wolf scout ish " behind enemy line" feel to him but at the same to keep him as a Wolf lord.

I would say he would make use of Saga of the Warrior Born, Wolftooth necklace, meltabombs, wolf tail talisman. I think you would probably want to go runic armour with a storm shield ( for the sweeping advance factor ). The wolves i am not convinced he would take, as it means his "retinue" would have less veterans in it which seems like another big factor to his GC.

The other way you could approach it .. which is going to cost you out the waazo .. would be

WL with jump pack

WP with jump pack

either a large contingent of Sky claws with a WG with jump pack

OR a contingent of WG with jump packs.

I understand that a WGBL surely is not a WL. I guess how I envision how erik's "...swift and bloody violent act.." means he is a wolf. Baying howls circle the prey until those lying in wait are ready to strike. I don't see swift and bloody violent as a blood craved mad man, but a hunter. A man that is a weapon of war and has no mercy for his enemies. He has no problem slipping into an enemy camp with his wolves and slitting throats. He holds no quarter, but is not a crazed warrior that has given in to the mark of wulfen. I believe his army would use a high number of fast moving units as well as those that can cause disruption. Something like sniper scouts, two rune priests (one tempest and jaws, the other Living Lightning/Fury of WS), Thunderwolf Calvary (maybe two), landspeeders, and a highly mech army. Also maybe a drop dread, those guys mid game can cause some real havoc.

I can also see a hunter using two wolves, but again, just me I guess.

For starters, name thief!

As for the WL vs WGBL, I agree with Khine to a degree. I see Morkai's "hunter" persona as a highly skilled tactician. His employment of scouts is for tactical advantage, allowing them to eliminate the threats in the rear while he takes out the fore. I don't see him leaving things to chance, and for that would not expect him to personally deploy in a drop pod due to the randomness (not to say he wouldn't use them). I agree with the no fen wolf retinue for veterans' sake comment. I personally see him with at least one wc and warrior born, and at minimum two scout packs with wgbls leading with saga of hunter. I also see him mixing his PA and TDA WG for wound allocation.

I did not mean it to sound coarse, I sometimes forget that the internet does not give tone to my voice. How I said it I should have illustrated my tone by ending with something like this:

I've played wolves since second edition, I've gone through many stages. Rhino rush melee wolves, termie heavy wolves, and recently before my break from the game (4th ed, haven't played 5th yet) I tried out a balanced force and it worked rather horribly. I just know that my wolf scouts were almost always my MVP's. So I figured I'd try to build on that aspect of the wolves and Erik seems like such a great way to create that theme.

I just wish they would stat out his character, I really think he would make non-OBEL scouts troop choices.

he'd be the wolf lord that would make entire uprisings stop by just letting them know he's coming for them! read his description in the dex, this guy is one badass mother****er that even the other wolf lords would fear. think of him as nightlords that stayed loyal! this guy terrorises the enemy to the point where they'd rather put a bullet in their head then to wait form his company, or his scouts to attack. he's so unstable even his wolfguard would be affraid to have him in their back, were it not for his unquestionable loyalty.

atleast that's my view on him

I agree, Death Eaters from Harry Potter, Batman in Gotham, or Wolverine in Marvel. A name and force that can straighten a man's spine just by dropping it.

:P

Wolves do not cry, but howl at the moon for not giving them greater challenges in battle. Rally brother and storm a world of heretics to make yourself feel better.

I’ve thought about starting Morkai’s company, and have thought about doing a counts as Ragnar to represent him.

Mostly I want this as any generic Wolf Lord kitted out in a similar fashion only comes in a little cheaper with no special rules.

Just my ideas

Jackmatt.

And here I was thinking that the codex entry 'Wolf Lord' was supposed to represent, well, any of the 9 other Wolf Lords that don't have specific rules!

Is there really a need to add special rules on top? Just tooling him up as you see fit should be enough, no? And depending on how you wanna see his fluff, you might want to include his brother Rune Priest, but I'd be tempted to believe he'd rather not fight anyone from that priesthood if he could help it.

I never asked for a special rule, I was wondering what people thought he was? I do believe that Wolf Scouts would be troop choices in his company.

Not sure I agree with that.. a potential for 9 packs of wolf scouts seem unnecessary. However, I would claim that fielding Morkai would grant access to landspeeder storms and/or camo cloaks.

True, maybe have a limitation that troop choice scouts cannot use BEL. Also getting camo cloaks would be amazing, I really want to try out a sniper squard, but without the cloak it's really hard to justify.

is there a lot of information about erik morkai in this months white dwarf? eg is it worth picking it up for it?

Negative, they flushed out Harald Deathwolf since the TWL was released.

Got to go with hendrick on this one (badass mofo). im building morkais company myself and see him dark and dangerous, i mean " if the other wolf lords knew fear they'd fear morkai " how does that give the impression of someone sneaking around in the bushes? yes the codex says he uses a lot of scouts, but these are wolf scouts, fast, quiet, brutal killers. i think what bjorn stormwolf calls "whelp work" is more like what special forces call "wet work".

My idea is to have his company being very mobile but flexible, hope to use stormravens, drop pods, rhinos, land raiders and fw assault rams.

Erik has a storm shield and thunder hammer and usually appears on the battlefield in Runic Armor, a gift from his brother. The use of scouts is two fold first to identify a target's location and second as a disruption unit that can flank and harass exposed weaker units. With the information provided by his scouts, he as a master tactician can better direct where his forces are most needed. He also has been known to use a small Drop Pods force to achieve a second layer of disruption and/or strategic strikes. He has found a 3 pod force can also be used in conjunction with his scouts as a force multiplier on the battlefield.
