Release Date of next Dark Angels Codex

Hello Unforgiven

I want to build an army that has only bikes and terminators, the Dark Angel Codex does this the best because of the rules for both the Deathwing and Ravenwing.

My questions are:

When is the next codex likely to be released?

And

Do you think there will be big changes to the Deathwing and Ravenwing?

Thanks in advance

Lord Lee

I am almost 100% certain that the all-Deathwing and all-Ravenwing armies will still be available in the new Codex. First off, most armies seem to have some "unit type X as troop choice"-options these days. Secondly, they're a pretty huge part of the Dark Angels' image.

I'm guessing we retain options for Terminator cmd. squads -the Grey Knights have them too, after all. But I would perhaps hold off on those (or magnetize, just to be on the safe side).

We've been the all-bike/all-termie army for 13 years, if they change anything then it wont be this. That said I can see them changing how this works significantly. Blood Angels and Grey Knights already played with Troops slots without using ICs and I think that would be a good way to go with the Dark Angels as well.

Command squad is also likely (again, we've had a terminator command squad since 3rd Edition), composition of it is the only problem.

As for release date, I will note that there is nothing[/i] concrete yet. All we know is that Chaos are coming soon and that the starter box will contain Chaos and Dark Angels (the starter box rumour is fairly solid and coming to us via a very confident hastings, some no longer even consider it a rumour, including hastings). We also have some tidbits from Darnok over on Warseer saying that the Dark Angels are being worked on (but it is implied they are not as far along as Chaos).

So if we end up seeing the Chaos codex in May/June then Dark Angels will probably be after 6th Edition, likely in October (since 6th will probably be a July release and the starter is most likely a September release). If Chaos is released after 6th though, then it is anyone's guess since we have other rumours of Tau being the first codex of 2013.

So it is important to remember not to jump the gun. Unless DA are a surprise May release (I'm personally thinking this isn't very likely) then it is still at least eight months off so rumours for it will be sparse. Consider that 6th is a closer release and we know very little hard facts about it at this point (even if the leak is real it is so old as to be poor evidence either way). So until we see another codex release we wont really have a good idea when/if the Dark Angels will be coming.

With them being in the starter the chances they are coming soon is good but it is no guarantee of their imminent realease (just look at the High Elves from 8th Edition WFB).

In my opinion, for what it's worth, I think Terminators are going to be safe. Out of the 30 Terminators I currently own, ony 4 will be affected if the rules change. I have a CML with dual claws and 3 with CML and TH/SS. I also have the Apothecary. Other than those, the rest are just like regular terminators I can run in another Codex if need be.

As for Ravenwing, they may get jetbikes and likely a flier (ie Stormraven) but really who knows. I think the real changes will come in other units, points values, etc. We'll likely get some fancy shoulderpads, wings and such like the BA/Wolves too.

Again, just my opinions on what I think is coming down the line.

I can't see anything changing in terms of options we already have. We may get new units/troops but it's doubtful we'd lose any.

Tactical squads may end up the same as Codex Space Marines and Codex Blood Angels. Assault Squads will have the same options as Blood Angels (though stay fast attack) and Devastators will have the point costs of Blood Angels.

There may be Sternguard/Vanguard or there may be a special Dark Angels veteran squad.

Based on prior performance there will be many "dark" themed items which are basically generic items with extra (pointless) abilities.

Hadn't thought of that...not needing the grand master of the deathwing to field deathwing as troops... That would be a major change, but the thought of fielding TWO interrogator-chaplain-led crusader-mounted assault squads... Wow! Yeah, it's 1300 points for two units, but man, two units I wouldn't want to have to face! Especially if we get some real boost to our shooty termies...two squads of dakka holding down the home objectives and two squads of pure madness crashing the enemy's...22 terminators and 2 tanks for 1750-ish... Yum!
