morkai's transfers

After pondering on it for quite long now i have finally decided to cut all ties with bran redmaw in my great company. I really dislike the whole monsterous creature-turn wulfen and back again stuff as it simply doesn't fit in with my personal view upon the wulfen.

After having done the effort to freehand the redmaw symbol on quite a lot of my miniatures i'm now repainting my whole great company their shoulderpads into another great compagnies marking. when deciding what symbol to use now there were a couple of symbols that drew my attention, first of all the twin headed wolf morkai, a beast feared by many. second came the symbol of the ravening jaw and third the sun wolf. after much pondering i simply picked the twin headed wolf of morkai, both because of the availability of transfers aswell as the fact that this symbol is seen the most on miniatures etc. heck most of my new space wolf models feature the morkai breastplate! having no real desire to freehand all those symbols again i've decided to try my hand on the decal sheet, however i'm finding it hard to get it completly smooth. i know that many use vanish but i find it makes the shoulderpad a tad too shiny on my dirty wolves. has anyone tried some other ways to get it smooth? i thought maybe making a small slit between the two heads might work?

I use to go through a very time consuming method though it might be better to try it out on some spare aobr marines first til you get the hang of it.

i would start by shave off a layer of the field inside the shoulder pad until i got it to a desired depth, not too deep to damage the SP but not too shallow as you need quite a sturdy amount of GS.

Then i would get a piece of green stuff in roughly the right shape of the pad as if it laid flat. Quickly place the transfer on the now flat green stuff field.

here is the tricky part, you need to keep the green stuff wet and malleable but at the same time let the transfer dry. I find it best to do it in a cm shallow pool of water.

After the transfer dries, carefully position the GS field into the shoulder pad and remove any excess.

I realise this is quite a complicated method but it seems to work wonders.

1) Glaze warnish on the shoulder pad (wait until it's dry) . Sometimes you will need 2 layers to get smooth surface.

2) Use decal soft (humbrol) or simmilar thing to soften up decals after putting them on the shoulder pad

3) Any mat varnish.

voila!

With this method decals will not shine, and will look more like freehand.

If the symbol is still to big or too weird-shaped, use hobby knife to gently incise it in one or two places.

since a topic like this is pointless without some pictures, and about half of my army is already outfitted now with their new sign

somehow this bloodclaw always makes me think of battle of the fang.

some of you might remember the old redmaw symbol i had freehanded on one of my rhinos. it's not replaced by this baby!

i did the same thing. i dropped redmaws company for ragnars. i had to re do the company markings too. i use the FW space wolf transfer sheet and the best way i found to get the decal smooth is by using micro sol product. or like forte said... vinegar.

google micro sol. most hobby stores should stock it.

such a great undertaking hendrik! why not just use the same icon, only a different version/vision or wolf lord? your own interpretation of Bran himself.

it's mostly because people will always automatically link the redmaw with bran, and his new "look at me grimnar, i'm a werewolf now!awhoooh, don't worry i'll change back when this is over"-thingy going on. I absolutly resent that kind of wulfen and it goes against every thing i liked about the wulfen actually

as for the vinegar idea, what ratio works best? 1:1?

thanks for the tutorial, but it seems they always end up with a glossy effect, which is not very much to my likes. as for transfers i've got plenty of my own, but it's a generous offer!

That's were your matt varnish comes in.

You only need a little white vinegar in the water. You can add some neat once the transfers in place if it still needs smoothing. Use a dry cloth or some kitchen towel to gently smooth it down too.

No problem mate.

Agreed, hit them with some dull coat and they will look sweet. Did you try the vinegar?
