New Sky Warrior of Fenris

Recommended Posts

Hi, I bought a battalion and njal today, and kinda slammed together what seemed good. As you can imagine, this Rule of Cool approach left me in kind of dire straits. :) Now, looking at the codex, I realize what I assembled doesnt fit with grey hunters. *;-| I also put with it the remnants of my last marine army, which I intend to "wulf-i-fy", which gives me a bit more. If I list what I have, can you give me assistance on what the hell to do?

SM 10 man Tactical squad with Missile and Melta

Njal obviously :P

5 Tactical Terminators, with CML

5 Assault marines

5 Devastator squad members with 2 Missile and two Lascannons, and Sarge

9 more Tactical marines including one Flamer

the Battalion, assembled as follows:

5 scouts, Bolt Pistol and CCW

20 PA wolves, armed as follows. "XXX xY" = XXX taken Y times.

Frost Axe x2

Plas Pistol/Power Sword

Chainsword/Power Sword? Maybe counts as boltpistol powersword

Plasma Gun

Bolter/Chainsword x6

Bolt Pistol/Chainsword x3

Boltgun/Power Sword

Dual Chainsword

Bolter

Thunder Hammer/Shield

Bolter/Wolf Claw

Bolt Pistol/Power Fist

Drop Pod, Storm Bolter

I hope you've not glued those Space Wolves. You need to look over the pack entries in the Codex. A lot of what you have listed may look good but its aimed at Wolf Guard and not Grey Hunters.

The Codex is your friend. Use it.

The first two and the last three in particular.

First things first, welcome brother!

Bad news: some of the stuff you've put together is not viable. Good news: a lot of it is, and you have enough regular bodies to play at lower point levels without being handicapped. 2-3 full packs of grey hunters backed up by scouts, wolf guard, and long fangs AND lead by a rune priest can make a decent 1000pt foot slogging army.

Now, about the models you've built. The nice thing about frost/power weapons is that they are visually interchangeable and can even count as normal close combat weapons, unless your opponent is of the particularly obsessive/compulsive type about WYSIWYG. So those are okay. As Grey Hunters are armed with bolter, bolt pistol, and close combat weapon, any model armed with a combination thereof is good. The dual close combat weapon lads can be used to represent Mark of the Wulfen troops or regular grey hunters. The ones you might have a problem with are the Thunder Hammer/Shield, Bolter/Wolf Claw, and Bolt Pistol/Power Fist. The first one is viable, just not points efficient as a wolf guard. He might make a good Wolf Lord or WGBL though. The second one is particularly bad. Wolfclaws on wolf guard are best taken with a combi weapon that complements the pack's task. Nothing a little work with an xacto knife can't fix. The last one is viable to represent a Grey Hunter with powerfist, as in game terms he'd still have his bolter too. However, if he's a wolf guard, he's better with a combi weapon just like the wolf claw chap. For future reference, some people (myself included) find it useful to magnetise the arms on wolf guard and HG models to allow for weapon changes without building a whole new model. You may want to try that.

What you really need are more special weapons. One of each isn't going to be enough. It might be wise to acquire a scout with a meltagun, which gives them anti tank capability, unless you'd like to give them melta bombs instead.

Now, the quality of advice you get is directly proportional to the information you provide. What kind of list do you want to build? Gunline footsloggers, mechanised infantry, or assault versions thereof, or something completely different?

This seems the most comprehensive and useful advice so far, and I thank you Brother. Enjoy a mead on me. OK, down to commenting on the advice you gave me. A Wolf Lord sounds tempting, but maybe two HQs is a bit much at this point level, I think. A combi weapon is an interesting idea, but how would I go about making one? I would love to magnetize, but alas. there is no shop nearby that I know of that sells magnets of the correct size.

Scouts: I was planning on meltabombs anyway, but I can see how meltaguns are useful... Maybe...

What kind of list do I want to field... Without seeing too many wolves in action, it is hard to say. I am one of the first wolf players in my FLGS, so I don't know too much about their tactics... I might go for my first mech list, but shooty or assault? Gah! So much I don't know... I rely on your help to get me up to speed Brothers.

Thank you,

Neophyte Fireball
