Vindicator Formation!

Asrech

Recommended Posts

Got the urge yesterday night to do something I've seen done by others to great effect. A freehand piece done across 3 vindicator shields!

I've seen it done with the chaos star, an aquila and other images, so I figured I'd try my hand at it.

I went with the aquila since it's a long symbol, so I could stretch it across all shields without it looking wierd, then added flames in honour of my Salamander roots ( and to fill up space).

Really happy with how it turned out! And once I get the tanks done as well the formation will look very nice on the table.

C&C appreciated!3

Love it! As someone who paints flame I know how long it takes to get it looking right. The aquilla is also superbly done. I really like the cracks in it. You've done a great job on them, and I agree with Huberticus that once they're done you should get a picture of them on a nice ruined city board. :tu:

Thanks a lot guys, really appreciate the feedback! :(

Put down the basic colors ( 1st layer green and metal ) so I can see how it's going to flow once done.

Also decided to spiff it up a little with a little GS effect on the command tank!

And what I like to refer to as the "Oh S**t" angle:

First attempt at a muzzle flare, let me know what you guys think!

Cheers!

Cheers guys!

Yupp, scratch made, although the inspiration did come from the ones you can order online.

Some shades of red later, FIRE IN THE HOLE!

Thanks brother! When doing freehands I usually draw them first with a mechanical pencil right onto the model, with a mech pencil I can get the outline, and an erraser actually works just fine on the black primer. Once I have a outline I'm happy with, I just go "fill in the fields" with paint. Getting the wings even in level got easier thanks to the fact that there are several reference points with the hatches and the window, and holding the two shields together as I did the line from one to the other helped.

Some updates! Whites are done, metals are done, black has been cleaned up and the lights have been given the first two layers.

Been starting with the green highlights and made decent progress with the first layer (out of 5). The black will also be highlighted later on so that the green doesn't pop just quite that much:

I wish I could just keep working on these tomorrow and get them done, but I'm hitting a plane to Boston and will be gone untill Sunday. So this will be the last update of the week.

Thanks for tuning in brothers, would love to hear more feedback!

The muzzle flash is a great addition to the command tank. This makes me want to get a third vindi.

I also love your paint scheme. The limited use of snot green with scorpion green highlight makes a great contrast with the black. The highlighting looks very similar to how I hightlight my models. Take a look.

Thanks guys!

Muctar, I really like how you did the fist on Venerable Nal'zar, good job! The scorpion green is the first highight, on all edges, then I go over it with 3 highlights more ( add in more and more white, almost pure white at the end ) and go over the corners.

Can't wait for sunday when I'm back in town so I can work on these bad boys.

The question now is, what to put on the banner on the command tank!?

Suggestions??

Just on that, maybe consider putting one of these quotes (or adapatations of) somewhere along the hull? I know it's more of an IG type of thing to do, but nothing truly says "Fear my pie plates" like a mocking slogan ;)

"Victory does not always rest with the big guns: but, if we rest in front of them we shall be lost."

"Show me a fortress and I'll show you a ruin."

"The roar of engines, the recoil of cannons. That is where the true joy of battle lies."

"Let them hide in their fortress. My crew can use the target practice."
