fireballoflight
We were called out to assist the Imperial guard amid reports of an incursion of the dread powers of chaos. A strike force of loyal Wolf packs arrived to find the guard had fallen to chaos, making out fight harder. There were signs of Chaos Space Marines, traitors that they were, but for all our time on the planet, we did not enter combat with any. The battle raged across the planet, and Njal Stormcaller and a small strike force decided to try and take the capital. Great Pack Fangstrike Njal Stormcaller, Runic Terminator Armour. Alas, as we ran forward, our backup Great Pack leader fell as he clambered over a fallen aquila and thus we had to defend him until the apothecaries could arrive. The palace was situated in a quarter of the ruined city, mostly untouched. We got a vox transmission stating that Pack "Wulfs R Us" were on their way. I grumbled about them trying to steal the glory, but quickly realized that we had bigger problems. The battle was about to begin! Almost the entire opposing army cowered behind their chimera, which itself hid behind a ruin. Cowardly guard. We had already ordered the Long Fangs into a nearby ruin, and deployed protecting our fallen Wolf Guard. As we prepared to charge, there was a great whistling. The Grey Hunter pack had come in within a Drop Pod right next to the enemy! Our pack let off a great howl about the loss of glory, and then continued it in great sorrow as they and their pod got obliterated in a great storm of light. Ulvrik charged forward, in an attempt to get the opposing commander's head or die, narrowly dodging a sniper shot in the process. The long fangs fired at the chimera but only succeeded in collapsing the ruin further. Njal fired a storm of lightning at the enemy command squad hiding in the palace, slaying one, yet he howled in seeming pain. We swore an oath of revenge for the loss of a pack of Battle Brothers. The guard moved out of the cover of the ruin, moving to pepper Ulvrik with a great light show, as he ran forward to meet them. Njal and the Long Fangs peppered the sniper squad with missiles, lascannon fire, and great showers of lightning. The entire squad fell. They called in an artillery barrage, which hit a patch of open ground behind us. What were our Thunderwolf Cavalry playing at? They should have silenced them by now! Despite this, we aimed at the squad with the HVT Sergeant, but had to shield our eyes as Ulvrik got enveloped in his own sun made of lasgun fire. Alas, he did not fulfil his oath. The scouts came in just in time to witness this inglorious death, and charged forward for vengeance. Far Paw aimed at the HVT veterans, just in time to see the chimera carrying the enemy commander powerslide out of the ruin. Squad Leader Graeson voxed us, asking for further advice on what to do about this suicidal move, and Njal voxed back to obliterate the Chimera. The Long Fang pack proceeded to do just that, as the guard continued to advance. Alas, due to this lack of fire, the HVT squad managed to cower in a ruin, but the Scout squad just managed to catch up to them, and proceeded to start laying into them with pistol and blade. Njal fired another storm of lightning at another veteran squad moving back to recapture the palace, but the head command squad assaulted the engaged scout squad, and wiped them out to a man. Alas, the Scouts had not managed to fulfill their quest for vengeance and kill the HVT who had killed Ulvrik, but they had dealt the squad a hefty blow. The massive blob of guardsman could not pick their way over the terrain fast enough to join the command squad, but they did not need to. Njal moved forward alone, to challenge the commander. This was voiced by calling in a massive storm, which dealt massive damage to his squad; he also commanded us and Far Paw to shoot everything we had at the massive horde, joining us with yet more lightning. The horde fell, but did their job. This distraction allowed the veteran squad to cower in the palace. We would not be able to get to them before reinforcements arrived. Already the strike force commander was voxing to ask what was keeping us from taking the city. The commander responded by charging in against Njal. Alas, he had the HVT squad assault us so we could not back up the Stormcaller when the remainder of his command squad followed. We leapt forward to meet them, but could not see what was happening to the rest of the Great Pack. We finished off the HVT, when we noticed Njal had fallen! Seeing no obvious sign of injury, barring a dented helm, we assumed he was merely unconcious, but never the less, we charged in to inflict great suffering on the commander for potentially killing our leader. Baring my teeth behind my helm at the commander, we charged him and the remainder of his squad in a massive whirlwind of destruction, ending in lopping off the bionically enhanced commander's head in a great fountain of blood. At this point we got a vox. "Gather your fallen and fall back, reinforcements are there to finish the job. There will be more said about this failure." As we approched Njal, he woke, and we rejoiced, both in the fact he survived, and that he fulfilled his oath. Gathering the second in command, and leaving the palace, Wulfs R Us and Ulvrik to the reinforcements, unable as we were to approach without being fired upon, we retreated to the fellow wolves who were entering the city gates as we retreated.
