New Wolf/40k Player here

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to pop in and say hi! I've recently gotten into 40k...though I have wanted to play for the past 12 years I never really had the capital to do so until now. In addition to wanting to play for those 12 years, i've always wanted to play Space Wolves, and I must say after my first game I love it.

Played a 2000 point capture point game against a custom chapter of Space Marines, and although it was a loss it was a glorious loss. The most important part was that I had a ton of fun and learned a lot.

I was going to post my army list that I used for some tips, they would be greatly appreciated.

I think overall my army was weak to armor, which was all my opponent was running. But I inflicted heavy casualties before being ultimately wiped clean. What I really took away from the battle were these points:

1.) Do not charge Cavalry into a squad of Terminators with Stormshields + Thunderhammers.

2.) Equip Cavalry with Meltabombs.

3.) Long fangs are amazing.

4.) A wolf lord with a wolf claw can eat a squad of marines in one turn.

5.) Positioning is everything with armor. (I lost my Land Raider vs. a Land Raider Crusader thanks to an immobilize.)

6.) Fenrisian Wolf = Extra wound

Also, thanks to not really knowing how to utilize them, my Cavalry and Lone Wolf saw really no traction.

Looking forward to seeing some strategies and battle reps!

Welcome to The Fang, Brother!! Space Wolves have the most character and personality of all the chapters, and they are a blast to play on the table top as well! Long Fangs are amazing, and Wolf Claw lords are one of my favorites as well. Glad to hear you are enjoying the hobby!

Welcome to the Fang! Clearly you picked the right army, because, well.. wolves, duh.

To better help advise on your army, you'll want to post a breakdown (or pics preferred!) of what you have so far. Also, even though you've barely had a taste for combat, give us a hint at what play style you'll likely wanna go with so we can help cater suggestions to that end.

Sample playstyle themes popular with SW players are like mech-heavy (vehicles, dreadnoughts), or Loganwing (Grimnar allows WG terminators to be taken as Troop units), and Razorspam (taking multiple packs of long fangs loaded with missile launchers supported by razorbacks)...or you can simply mention more basic themes like preference to offensive or defensive playstyles.

My playstyle is this: I really want to be an "in your face" kind of Space Wolf player. From what I understood when I chose this chapter is that they're incredibly versatile but they shine in the fray...so I went for that. I really want to get in and beat face. What i'm finding is that this strategy isn't very effective against heavily mechanized forces as I fought in this battle. I went against a land raider stuffed with Terminator hatred/Vulkan, 3x Marine filled Rhinos & 6 Land Speeders. I ended up killing all but 2 speeders (they held back with launchers), a Rhino and the Land Raider. I was most impressed by my wolf lord who annihilated an entire squad of space marines by himself in 1 assault phase.

I think packing my wolf guard with melta bombs would make them more effective, I can charge armor and melt it before it does anything. Are Meltabombs single use only?

Thanks for any tips...Loganwing sounds pretty cool.

OK, so.. for starters, awesome and solid looking army. Just for clarity's sake, Arjac isn't considered an HQ.

Some things I noticed with your list:

You're having issue with armour. From what I've seen, having a single TH in a TWC pack is almost manditory and would help take out some of that armour with their ability to cross the field in a single movement phase. Giving one a meltabomb wouldn't hurt either.

Second, how are you getting your GH packs into the fray? Are they footslogging? That wastes potential turns where they could be unloading bolter rounds in the enemy while they're shlubbing into position. Especially with two pack leaders with at most a 6" ranged attack from Arjac's hammer. They need to be in the enemy's face as soon as possible. I would put Alpha pack (if not both packs) in a drop pod to get Arjac to the enemy's front line where he can devastate their gunline. This will unfortunately require you to drop 2 GHs to fit the pack in a drop pod, but in my experience, it's been worth it. All the games I've played with Arjac, he's been the shining star MVP on the table, and every time, I've used this strat.

Last... so here's the thing. That solo wolflord HQ is begging to be victory point/kill point cannon fodder. In my opinion, he's not making the most of the points spent on him. For the 163pts, I would get a Rune Priest HQ to join the Long Fang pack (with Living Lightning), and maybe a fourth thunderwolf cavalry, or if some points were shaved elsewhere, a pack of Scouts with a meltagun.

I'm basing my suggestions on your style of "get there fast, beat face, gloat, repeat." For that, fast attack units like twc and obel units like scouts make great choices to get in the enemy's face pronto. I highly recommend getting at least 1 drop pod for this style. If you begin taking more CC-oriented WG termies, or bloodclaws, you'll likely want an land raider crusader eventual, especially if Loganwing interests you. As to Loganwing, it can get hella expensive, but remember that just because you can take WG as troops, doesn't mean they all have to be in TDA, even though its generally preferred.
