Karl Ironwall
I know this topic has been done alot, but I figure I might as well throw in my two cents and see what people say. This is my wolf lord I literally just built an hour ago. Wolf Lord+ Frost Blade+Runic Armor+ Wolftooth Necklace+ Wolf Tail Talisman+ Belt of Russ+ Saga of the Bear+ Thunderwolf Mount (which I forgot, doh!)+ 2 Fenrisian Wolves (which I also forgot, doh again!)= 260 pts Yeah, it's a little pricy, but if I put him with a unit of TWC I think he'll do alright. Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
Looks pretty standard to me. At lower points I think this is a solid HQ option. Once you go higher (assuming you are playing 1500) you could add a storm shield for the 2+/3+ and two fen wolves for additional wounds. skoll
since you got bear already give him a thunder hammer for S10 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248395-thunderwolf-lord-setup/#findComment-3008163 Share on other sites
Mr. Danvers
Just a quick one - everyone defaults to Saga of the Bear. Now, With the TWC, the only thing that will ID him is something thats S10 or a libby weapon (off the top of my head). Surely taking Warrior Born would work out pretty well or Beastslayer depending on his role would be better? It might vary in your meta, but I never come across anything with ID effects as everyone seems to cast a psychic power rather than using the force weapon. skoll
honestly if I give mine a TH he is getting bear to make sure he swings (god knows there are enuff dreads around here to make sure he dies) if he has a frost blade he is getting warrior born. As for beast slayer? nothing short of a swarmlord merits giving ur lord beast slayer and if he is fighting the swarm lord u need bear to avoid ID from the boneswords (ID regardless of toughness) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248395-thunderwolf-lord-setup/#findComment-3008181 Share on other sites
Godhead
beast slayer is pretty decent IMO. You get to reroll hit vs anything with T5 so that's bikers, bloodcrushers, fiends, daemon princes, anything with MON, Pretty much any MC, etc. If you kit out your WGBL or WL with wolf claws, then you get to declare that you'll be rerolling wounds with your claws and automatically reroll hit vs those types of opponents. Plus if you give the lord ye old cheap melta bomb you get to reroll hits with it vs say walkers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248395-thunderwolf-lord-setup/#findComment-3008856 Share on other sites
Stormshadow
since you got bear already give him a thunder hammer for S10 Doesn’t the FAQ say you only get true T5 but not S5. So a TH would give you S9 and not S10? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248395-thunderwolf-lord-setup/#findComment-3008872 Share on other sites
Brother Tancred
No it says its S5 (near the bottom of pg4 in the FAQ) so if a model is on a TW their characteristics change to S5 T5, not S4(5) T4(5). Coverfire
So has there been a shift to Frost weapons over Wolf Claws for MEQ hunting? I always take a Stormshield. A Thunderwolf Lord is too large a points sink not to take as much protection as you can get, and I perfer it over the Belt because you're getting a pretty decent number of attacks (Lord base A4, +1 Thunderwolf Mount, +1 Charge). Saga of bear means you can assign any str 10 shooting attack to him. reducing the number of instant deaths the unit suffer. very handy against Guard, tau, marines with vindicators etc Also with BA(Mephiston) and GK make force weapons quite common having protection is worthwhle Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248395-thunderwolf-lord-setup/#findComment-3009944 Share on other sites
Grimtooth
I have changed to a FB/SS with Bear since my wolf lord now runs with a TWC pack that has its own thunderhammer for knocking around the tough guys while being hidden within a pack. Way more successful and no longer losing the initiative of the wolf lord. With str6 at initiative, you are still capable of hunting the big stuff and killing them before they can strike back. Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
As did I. I really disliked loosing that high(er) Initiative, since SW don't have much over I5. And what ever the lord does not kill, the pack can deal with. Or if you are busting up vehicles the lord CAN do it, but the TH certainly will do so!! I have been playing a TWL with wolf claw, runic armour and storm shield for a relatively cheap 210ish. However, the number of things out there which can now instakill him is too high. I dont play against many different armies, but just from my experience you have any of the following ; Anything with a bonesword. That's quite a lot of the nids (various HQs and warriors - who may even be flyers) - and they can give you initiative 1 with lashwhip. Dreadnought Ork Warlord with fist Anyone with a force weapon (that's half of Grey Knights by the sound of it :D ) Mephiston (with much higher initiative than the lord) For me, it's getting too expensive not to splurge out on Saga of Bear. Yes, warrior born is really good - but it's not good to a dead lord :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248395-thunderwolf-lord-setup/#findComment-3010040 Share on other sites
