Over the top bases

Recommended Posts

In all of my armies, i kind of get carried away in the design of the bases:

for my Tyranid army i used finely ground red iron ore for a Mars alien landscape look.

for my Rose Princes Space Marines each base had shrubbery and a single colored cloth rose.

for my Chaos army i used a compound called "Crackle" to have a blackened earth over lava imagery.

for my Ogre Kingdoms fantasy army i had a urban theme so they are all walking on cobblestone streets.

now starting Space Wolves i kind if am going over two time consuming themes:

1) since i'm doing 13th Company, and their time in the Eye running through all sorts of out there terrain, i was thinking of doing a "custom splatter" starfield on each base, then 6 or 7 layers of heavy clear coat so the marines are literally running over the stars, not making contact with them.

2) going with very old school norse mythology, running over the Rainbow Bridge; of course, each base would have to be all 7 color bars.

Since i'm doing the all wolf/mounted wolves army, i'll have big enough bases to make it worth while. Also, going with the pre-heresy dark grey color if you're concerned about clashing with the Rainbow bridge (yes it will).

any other cool ideas you can think of i'm all up for hearing them.....

If you go with the stars, before you do, consider painting the stars intermitently at different elevations between the layers of clear coat. I would reference this guy for inspiration:

"Goldfish Salvation"

good thing i can type without talking because my jaw is still on the floor from that video! oh what i wouldn't give for a hundred concave bases to pour resin into.

stars it is..... and the different elevations idea is golden; i'm all over that.

If you wanna go with clear bases, might I suggest these?

Making something that somewhat looks like that YouTube video above, with multiple layers of varnish, would definitely require hollow bases like these...

one word.... Basegasm!

making this army is gonna take forever, now, but man will it be sweet looking when i'm done. gotta buy dozens of the bases for the wolves and 2 dozen large ones for the TWC, TWL & mounted Iron Priest. this will be my summer project i guess.

Wulfbane: AMAZING video!! That man is very talented!! Thanks for the linky

The Rose Princes: This video is very helpful in every aspect of making clear resin bases ----->

End of Line

For those ice bases (and I know it's a bit off topic) I would've exchanged fortress grey with space wolf grey, and mordian blue with necron abyss. In the resin pouring process, I would've mixed a heavily water-dilluted mordian blue to the resin for the last 1/4 of it to top it off with a more hoarfrost effect. Aside from the snow, a lot of it came off as standing on liquid water to me.. mostly b/c of the mordian blue being so vibrant and the resin being so clear.

Evening everyone.

An idea I think I'll be trying out soon, thanks remembering what my other half bought for someone's xmas' present last year.

I've wanted to do a daemon world theme base for my wolves, or a Chaos temple, but resin bases might just be a little too expensive to do the whole lot so the lava idea, but like a blue or green would be something a bit different.

I was thinking about painting a base style similar to the one in the pics in this thread:

Then I just thought about trying out some UV glow paint for the lava cracks. What do you guys think? I think I'll order some cheap UV acrylic and give it a whirl.....but I have no UV light here to test them :S.
