Favourite "Minor" part of the heresy so far

Recommended Posts

So, was curious to know what people's favourite parts of the horus heresy series so far have been, minor parts though.

To start off with an example, (And one of my favourites);

----SPOILERS----

The Iron Warriors attitude during Istvaan V (in the First Heretic) when the Iron Warriors are shooting down the loyalist thunderhawks but not caring about the fact that the wrecks were killing more traitors than loyalists, and after bring contacted by legion commanders, one captain responds to Kor Phaeron along the lines of 'We are all bleeding today, have faith Word Bearer'

Don't get me wrong, there was alot of other class parts in that book, but this bit really made my inner traitor (and outer I guess :D) feel so proud haha.

Favorite "minor" part? I am presuming you mean the little details and conversations that crop up.

Anything detailing the Emperor and his inner circle, particularly Malcador the Sigilliite and the Custodes.

Prior to the HH novels we were not provided with much information about how the Imperium functioned and I really enjoy the ideals, trials, tribulations, and concerns of early Imperium being detailed.

Lots of little moments cropping up all over the place, but the Chess metaphor in the Outcast Dead was excellent. The board is already in motion, we rarely are granted the ability to come into a fresh game in our lives. As a historian, that one made me smile.

Constantin Valdor and Dorn's conversation about the Emperor, Imperium, and narrow minded views proved very interesting.

And of course; the opening of Mechanicus and the Big E- "Machine, HEAL THYSELF!" :D

I'm a very late convert to the series, only just got myself past the opening trilogy but the minor bit that stuck out most so far is right at the start of chapter one of Horus Rising, as Loken watches the Justaerin advance:

"They wore polished black armour, dark as night, as if they belonged to some other, black legion."

Fulgrim (the book, not the Primarch) holds both of my favourite pieces of Black Library writing; one is the final performance of Coraline Aseneca and her frenzied orchestra to a backdrop of sex, murder and cannibalism and the other is Ostian finding Serena D'Angelus' debauched studio.
Sergeant Thiel, awaiting censure from own Primarch for his forbidden philosphical tactical treaties (theoreticals) is in as much trouble as could be, so thinks to himself "Oh well, I may as well go for the whole hog and indulge myself in these weapons which are clearly forbidden."
Other parts I enjoy seeing are stuff like characters who are still in the 40k universe, and another part in the First Heretic,

When the planet Ingethel(sp?) and her tribes are on is found out to be Cadia, my mind was mini-blown

Finding out in Prospero Burns

that Bear was actually Bjorn the Fell Handed.

Didn't expect that myself.

This was so awesome. I think I posted it before but I put my book down at this moment and thought "Well played, Mister Abnett, well played."

Not sure if this is my favorite, or just the one that stands out most at this moment, but I vote for the scene in Deliverance Lost where Malcador explains the significance of a clay pot to Corax while in the Hall of Victories.

I agree, that little scene was a quiet kind of awesome.

What comes to my mind are two moments, both featuring the Word Bearers. The first is, in Aurelian,

when Lorgar is fighting that Bloodthirster (ol' wassisname), smashes a knee with the first blow, and forces the daemon to kneel before him

. Wonderful bit of imagery that. The second has to be Argel Tal's thoughts in The First Heretic,

right before he gives the command for the opening shot of the drop site massacre. The moment of reflection upon his long-ago childhood struck me as strangely poignant. It's so out of place, as though to highlight the enormity of what he's about to do.

Aw, hell, now that I'm thinking about it,

the moment where Argel Tal returns to find the Custodes have slain that woman - I can't remember her name - and her last words are of her childhood fear, and how he's become that same monster, breathing in the dark

. And the last lines of The First Heretic too, while we're at it.

Basically, any moment that reflects upon the price paid by the Word Bearers in their embrace of Chaos. Any moment that reflects them not as inhuman monsters (à la Imperial Propoganda, or poorly written Black Library tales), but as creatures who have paid an unaccountable price for their decisions.

Forgive me for mangling the quote up, but this line from the first book

"I was there the day Horus slew the Emperor"

and the reveal about what he was talking about that came afterwards is one of my favourite parts in the entire series.

That said, due to my GCSEs cropping up at the in 2009, I never got past Mechanicum. Evidently it looks like I have a lot of reading and awesome stuff to catch up on...

There are so many good bits to choose from but like Brother Captain Kezef and others I really liked the bit about the pot. I remember thinking at the time, hmm shattered into eight shards you say? I wonder if that number is significant and that as it lies on it's shelf when viewed from above does it resemble a certain well known symbol .....

Also from ATS a piece that did surprise me -

"The Emperor knew of such creatures, and had bargained with them in ages past"

That to me really showed the level of the Emperor's ambition and his arrogance really does have no bounds. Then as it carries on

"but he had never dared faced one"

. The first bit in the series so far where he is "put in his place" and actually realises his size in the scheme of things. It makes his comments about the chess game all the more meaningful.

Ha ha me too. One of my faves - in TFH -

"The travels of Osyrus and Odisseon in Terran myth are the travels of Khaane, Tezen, Slanat and Narag- prophets born Colchis great seekers now lost to time's embrace"

. I really liked that. There are just so many to choose from and a lot of them mentioned in this thread.

Got another favourite minipart!

"Thrascias. That's what the Grekans called it. That's what they called it when he sailed back across the sun-kissed waters to Thessaly in Iason's crew, with a witch and a sheep-skin for their efforts." Awesome! Trooper Persson was an argonaut! Woop! And after a quick wikipedia look, apparently Jason and his argonauts sailed to Colchis to retrieve the Golden Fleece! Nice
