Wulfebane
The first versions of Ragnar had blonde hair. When 3E came around, the army painter at that time decided to go with black hair and it stuck. Since then, all novels and concept art depicting Ragnar have him with black hair. It also may have had something to do with around the time Ragnar's sculpt came out, GW was so proud of their red and yellow paints being so vibrant that they interjected the colors into everything they could get away with. Do yours blonde if you want. I had this debate when making my Ragnar and decided to follow suit with how the lore was evolving around him being black-haired... plus I think it looks better on him. Buliwyf
I wonder if space marines die their hair? Just the pretty boys in the Emperor's Children. I think they rock the guy-liner, too. Valerian
I seem to recall that Ragnar was blond haired and that the black mane part related to his wolf pelt? Did i imagine this as this is how i would like to paint my Ragnar but if its going to look odd ill do him with black hair As previously stated , when the Ragnar model was first released, the Studio painted him blond, and most players followed suit. None of the fluff actually addressed the point of his hair color, so you'd be free to color it however you saw fit without violating background material. The Blackmane "name" is certainly wolf-related, but not just due to pelt color. Blackmane wolves are one of the many species of Fenrisian Wolves, just like Grey Wolves, or Thunderwolves are distinct species. The Blackmane is known as the most deadly of all of the species, and Ragnar killed one on his Lone Hunt. This was such a significant achievement that it stuck as his nickname/appellation, and he also took the Blackmane as his totem when he was elected a Wolf Lord to replace Berek Thunderfist (whose totem was the Thunderwolf). Valerian Yeah, the Blackmane described in the Space Wolf Omnibus novel was sickly and mostly grey too, so the author was trying to depict it more as a species than a color 'code.' Did i imagine this as this is how i would like to paint my Ragnar but if its going to look odd ill do him with black hair It is more clever and humorous if Ragnar has blond hair. If he actually had black hair, then got the nickname or moniker Blackmane.... well, it somewhat lacks that zing, yes? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248716-ragnar-blackmane/#findComment-3012213 Share on other sites

Valerian
In 1st Ed he was named after the wolf he killed on his return to the Fang as an initiate. Subsequent fluff has superseded this EDIT: After double-checking, even the current 5th Edition fluff says that he was hunted by one of the much-feared Blackmaned Wolves, as dark and terrible as any night-Daemon during his trials as an aspirant. Ragnar killed the wolf-beast with his bare hands, although it was many times his size, and he drug the carcass back to the Fang. From that day, Ragnar took the Blackmane as his totem and namesake.
