New Wolves WIP pics

I've come back to my old Space Wolves army that was painted in Codex Grey 12-13 years ago when it was a shade darker than it is today, so my new Wolves are a little lighter than my old ones. I'm looking to get some feedback on the tone of grey before I start the highlighting.

I need to work on the white shoulder pad as well... it turned out a little splotchy. I think I'm over thining the paint.

What do you guys think at this early stage? Is the Grey too light for a 'non-Space Wolves Blue' force?

Thanks for any feedback. Hopefully the pictures aren't too big.

Drill your barrels, soldier!

:)

It looks clean and neat. I cannot tell from these photos of any splotchiness on the white...?

All paint goes on smoother with some watering down [sometimes even wetting your brush is enough] and will look better at the end of the day. The constant adjustment of too wet and too dry is something that you become used to if you are aiming for your own best results.

I have some old tissue hanging around, for taking off the water if I have over-charged the brush. Nothing quite as exciting as flooding your details with watery paint ;)

Love the grey, it is an exact match to my First RT Space Wolves, if I can find a picture ill show you. As for that Drill barrels of course, and a spot color would help. Nothing new to add really other then a nice badab black wash over the exhausts would help tone them down a bit. To me they scream "Spinners".

Just a quick update. I am still working on my color scheme, and decided on getting some of the new Forge World Space Wolf decals since Bran's Great Company's icon is on the sheet. These things are great if you have one of the Great Companies that aren't on the standard GW Space Wolf decal sheet. I highly recommend them.

Oh I drilled out the bolter barrel as well.

What do you think of the red helmet on the Blood Claw? It's a little much I think. I might try red hands/arms instead. Input?

Keep in mind the eyes aren't done and the highlights are done yet... and of course the pack icons are very rough, keep that in mind when critiquing. Try to only look at the the colors and not the details if possible.

Another quick Update. I've been working on a Wolf Priest conversion to go join my Blood Claws as my old Ulric the Slayer model is showing it's age. After seeing DV8 and Wolfbane's conversions I decided to give my own a go. It's no where near as good as what those guys can produce, but it's a nice start.

The Crozius was a real head ache, and if anyone has an idea of a better way to pull off a wolfized crozius I'd love to hear it. Thank god for Finecast for when it comes to conversions. I thought I was going to need to get the dremel out for this conversion and a hobby knife was all that was needed to cut up the Finecast Ulric.

The post with the shield and skull will go onto his backpack and the pistol is magnetized to be able to run either the bolt pistol or the plasma depending on points. I think I would normally run the bolt pistol, but wanted the option there for him to be badass known as Ulric the Slayer himself, so wanted to be able to pop the plasma pistol on there.

I used the Wolfguard chest cut in half with the 'wolf tail belt' chests lower piece glued into the lower torso similar to what DV8 did, and I think it turned out alright, but not perfect. DV8's version reposed the legs and the upper body was done to an amazing level, and I decided not to do the legs with this version mainly since I'm not sure I have the skills to pull it off.

Any feed back on the conversion would be very welcome. Thanks all - and Wolfbane and DV8 - thanks for responding to PM's. You guys are an inspiration to the community and your willingness to talk about how you pulled off your conversions is a huge help for mere mortals like myself.

Damn!! That Wolf Priest/Ulrick looks really nice. Now I'm going to have to butcher a new Ulrick model (even though I swore off failcast...) for a sweet looking conversion myself!!

I really liking the subtle shading on the helmets, as in to say the recesses over the entire model are darkened well and look very clean and straight. The skull on the power fist pops very nicely too!!

End of Line

Thanks for all the great replies everyone. Keep in mind that this Wolf Priest isn't my idea at all. I would never of thought of the angled head on the wolf priest that makes it so dynamic looking - I was just going to snip the head off the Ultic model and pop onto a plastic body.

All of the credit goes to DV8 for this concept. :)

Really diggn the two grey hunters, nice job... The wolf priest conversion is looking good as well. ^_^

That said, the bloodclaw needs something... it may just be the camera angle... what did you highlight the red helm with?

Brother Mjollner thanks for the reply. I agree. I'm not happy with the blood claw either. The red on the helmet in a mecharite red base coat, then a badab black wash, highlighted to a Vallejo 'red' I would need to get the color code to know which red it is. It's just a model color labeled red.

I picked up a Citidel Blood Red on Friday to try that with a light edge highlight and even though it's more of an orange I've used it with good results before. I'll try the red helmet with the blood red highlight and repost.

Thanks again.

Nice Wolf Priest I must borrow that Idea, Is the head-swap easier with Finecast?

And I think you should keep the red helmets on you Blood Claws..(Another idea I might borrow ^_^ )

I look forward to seeing more!

Jaegar thanks for the reply.

The Fine cast stuff really shines with conversions in my opinion. I've done a couple metal Ulric headswap conversions to a metal terminator body in the past and to make it look alright I needed to use a drexel tool cut and remove parts. The Fine Cast is a material that reminds me more of a molded rebbery plastic than like an epoxy resin. When cutting it its almost porous like the molded toy pencil topper erasers we used to get as kids. It's really easy to use in conversions. An entire model made of it might be a hassle long term though as the crozius mace felt brittle, almost like it wanted to break off.
