Orphus
Ulfgar Bloodmane. A rowdy Fenrisian and an even more rowdier Blood Claw he had always had a perchant for axes. Even before he ascended to the ranks of the Sky warriors he had earned the name Bloodmane due to his habit of dyeing his hair with the blood of his slain foes. His battle frenzy meant that he was put into Bran Redmaw's Great Company. Even as a Bloodclaw his insane fury matched that of a Khorne Bezerker in close combat and took his defeated foe’s chain axe as his prize. His time as a Grey Hunter was filled with many wondrous stories of his work and achievements so that his induction into the Wolf Guard seemed imminent. It came after a long overdrawn siege against an Ork stronghold, Bran’s patience and warriors being worn down by the greenskin’s defences. After ambushing a group of Stormboyz, Ulfgar guided the rest of his pack to fly on the Stormboyz rokitpacks into the heart of the Ork stronghold, causing enough of a ruckus to distract the front lines, enabling the Space Wolves to finally break the defences. [“Quit ya whinin’ ya grot faced maggot! We got this bunker ‘ere nice ‘n tight wit lots o plates ‘n shooty holes for dem Boyz with da big dakka. We gunna run dem Ummies to da dust then we send out all dem boyz down there spoilin’ for a fight. I is tellen’ ya noffin’ getting in ‘ear till we ready so noffin is gonna- Oi! What’s that?” - Big Mek Zagkrump Gutsmek immediately prior to the impromptu aerial assault by Space Wolves] When joining the Wolf Guard, Ulfgar spoke to the Wolf Priests his wish to study under them to become a Wolf Priest to better serve the Company and Chapter. Although telling him that Wolf Priests were rarely trained for their skills and rather selected for their qualities the Wolf Priests gradually taught Ulfgar the knowledge and leanings necessary to become a Wolf Priest. When officially given his tools of office he requested that he be given access to a Jump Pack to help straighten off the edges of Bran’s company. But his explosive streak remained, and all too soon it would come to the fore and shape his destiny as a Sky Warrior of Fenris. Bran Redmaw’s Great Company was called to aid the Imperial Guard and a force of Black Templars headed by the renowned Emperor’s Champion Maxim against an invasion of Tyranids. Unable to halt fully due to his allocated mission preventing the forces of Chaos from taking a Forgeworld, Ulfgar is given authority over an amount of Space Wolves by Bran Redmaw and sent in to protect a section of the Hive city. Maxim and an amount of Black Templars are in the same area after Maxim has a vision of a hive monstrosity emanating warp energy. Maxim turns out to be far too concerned with his own glory, have being an Emperor’s champion on so many occasions to make him into an elitist warrior, regarding the Space Wolves as the Emperor’s savages. Giving Ulfgar falsified information on the Tyranid attack positions he uses the Space Wolves as bait to set up a glorious assault for himself and his “superiorly aligned” forces against the monstrosity and its accompanying forces. Ulfgar arrives with his forces in the north to find the population still waiting to be evacuated. Horrified, Ulfgar gets as many marines as he can spare to swiftly evacuate the citizens. Expecting the Black Templars to be reinforcing them from the west the Space Wolves are hopelessly outnumbered as they find their south west flank completely undefended and swarming with Tyranids, including the monstrosity. Ulfgar has no choice but to turn his warriors around and hold off the Tyranids from the new position to protect those not yet evacuated. Many proud warriors are slain by the endless swarm and the monstrosity’s tusks. Ulfgar orders all remaining Space Wolves onto higher ground and just as they fall back Maxim and the accompanying Black Templars sweep onto the battlefield, having eliminated the Tyranids in the north. In a titanic battle the Emperor’s champion slays the monstrosity and with the Synapse broken the remaining Tyranids flee. This caused Maxim to pretentiously state out loud in earshot of Space Wolf and Guardsman alike that the Space Wolves had failed in their duty to protect the north from the Tyranids, abandoning it, forcing him and the Black Templars to deal with them and rescue the inhabitants (who had already been evacuated by the Space Wolves before hand) and then defeat the Tyranids at this position and claimed that the Wolves were fleeing like cowardly dogs, leaving the citizens to their fates. The potential fate of the remaining citizens if the Tyranids were not stopped was the only reason keeping Ulgar from exploding with rage. They could not afford to fight. Storming off the field, The Bloodmane spoke to his battle brothers of his plan to avenge their fallen. Communication with Lord Bran had been lost due to Synapse interference, more Xenos were coming and he could not spare a singe marine to go tell command what had transpired. As Ulfgar went to collect the geneseed of the Fenrisian fallen, those under his command silently and grimly prepared for the coming battle and all of its consequences. The Space Wolves were to support Maxim and his Black Templar route the remaining Tyranid forces. Supposedly having another vision from the Emperor, Maxim makes it his personal responsibility to head the assault which his Black Templars were predictably to be at the forefront of. As the Xenos swarmed forward head on, Ulfgar ordered a full tactical retreat of his forces to higher ground. The Black Templars suddenly found themselves without support and facing a full Tyranid swarm that could now focus in one direction, on one target. From their position, the Space Wolves waited patiently for the remaining Xenos to filter through. And when they came they ran straight into the ravenous jaws of the Wolves of Russ, wanting nothing more than to tear each and every last one to pieces to lighten the burden on their minds. The Tyranids were wiped out. Ulfgar finds Maxim, still alive but severely crippled. Further insults are thrown and Ulfgar stikes Maxim with his Crozeus, killing him but the force of which causes his Crozius to shatter. Horrified to find out that a message has been sent to the Inquisition by the Black Templars claiming the Space Wolves to be traitors, Ulfgar and the remaining Space Wolves under his command hijack an Imperial Cobra-class Destroyer and flee the planet, managing to link up with a Space Wolves fleet heading back to Fenris. [The roaring of Jump Packs echoed over the now silent battlefield, dust and debris hanging in the night air giving a stillness that only minutes before would have seemed impossible. One was getting closer, the roar increasing. The noise cut out suddenly followed by a shadow dropping the remaining ten meters onto his feet with a plascrete shaking crunch that kicked up further debris about his ebony coloured armour. Taking one step forward the character paused to lean into his vox “Spread out, check for…survivors.” The voice sounded dull and grim. The vox sparked back a second then the distant buzzing sounds dispersed. Quiet. Walking forward Ulfgar noticed a figure ahead, struggling to stand. Bloodied and broken, the figure met his eyes and laughed.] Once back on Fenris Ulfgar is grilled by Bran Redmaw until managing to explain the truth. Half expecting his suspicions on what actually happened to be correct did little to curb Redmaw’s furious outburst, cursing loudly and slamming into things in a rage causing Logan Grimnar to investigate. Controlling his own internal explosion when told the details and promising to deal with the Black Templar personally, Logan critised the handling of what had occurred. Ulfgar, along with those who accompanied him were therefore to be sent to oversee the rehabilitation of worlds that the Space Wolves had brought back into line or saved from one calamity or another. In other words, they were to be kept out of the way until everything could be brought to a close. A while later, Ulfgar is checking on the world of Icharis VII when he encounters a Space Wolf calling himself Orphus Wolfbringer, having been abandoned, flanked by a huge pack of Fenrisian Wolves. Claiming that while exiled on the planet he has heard rumours of Word Bearer cults on Typho VI, Orphus suggests that Ulfgar divert his attention there instead of continuing his tiresome crusade, and also that he and his wolves accompany him there. FIN.
