urban/digital camo

For my scouts I painted them dheneb stone, washed them with devlan mud, painted all but the recesses in codex grey, then highlighted them with fortress grey to give a basic grey cloak/trousers/arms.

 

For the camo, I did slightly squiggly lines in black, around 5mm long, horizontally all across the fabric, with a gap of perhaps 2mm between them. I then repeated this process with adeptus battlegrey and then skull white, each overlapping the line below it. The whole thing was then washed with a bit of badab black and devlan mud.

 

I think it looks pretty good without being too difficult to do. I'll post pictures when I get home.

So do you want urban camouflage, digital camouflage, or urban digital camouflage? Urban is easy: just pick colours that would work in a built-up area — I would advise ones that seem to fit the urban terrain you or your group use. Digital camouflage is … well, let's just say I'd recommend against it if you want to keep your sanity. Even if you were to do it grossly out of scale, painting random patterns of tiny squares (not dots, squares — digital camouflage means squares) is going to drive you crazy pretty soon.

 

Dotted camouflage patterns are doable — I've painted plenty of modern and WWII model soldiers wearing those, as well as a small Lost & Damned (remember those?) army created from Cadians with 1/35th scale WWII German helmets and web gear, wearing a faithful, if overscale, reproduction of Waffen SS pea pattern camouflage. However, I was glad I had finished the couple of squads I painted that way …

i dont have picts but i have seen a guy who made a gs mold from the cloaks used a super transaparant resin and used neon green sowing thread inside on the inside of the cast (to ceate a grid) ot cast the cloals

cloaks.

 

it looked great and ceated a stealth look.

 

but for urban i have used(they got stolen ;) ) i panted a grid and just fill the colors.

then i painted over the grid with goblin green, scopion green and neon green.

that the grid looked like it was glowing like hollowgraphic effect

The best bet for urban camo is to use the same basic colors of your basing, and then apply small patches of slightly lighter tone scattered around the garment, and then random linear breakups (capital Ts, Ls, other letters/shapes with 90 degree angles) in a slightly darker tone over the entire garment. Honestly, urban camo is garbage. The point of camouflage is to break up your body shape to the eye, and then blend those broken shapes somewhat into the background.

Urban environments have too many textures, colors, and shapes to mimic in a single piece of gear. In the end, the best you can do is attempt to break up your body silhouette with randomized linear and non-linear shapes to fool the eye of a shooter into missing by a few inches or passing you over at a rapid glance.

The closest anyone has come is TACAM, and that's pretty much what the above described stuff is. Randomized light and dark neutral patterns.

I went with an ACU pattern type and colorings for the guard army I work on...ive been thinking about translating the method to my marine scouts as well (as opposed to the woodlands I tend to work with). the pattern was pretty simple to work with once i found this link and the result is fairly decent. the key is not to dot os splotch for this...but pattern painting in overlapping layers....think tetris....

Something that I have been wanting to try for camo but havent found the time. A make-up sponge. If you want a random look you could tear it and dab on the paint. The other option is to cut small shapes triangles, rectangles and dab on the paint that way. either way experiment with it on some paper or card board to get the effect you want.

 

The other thing I have tried I did with my eldar snipers. I used blue painters tape and put random shapes do one color then repeat the process with other colors.
