Greyall doing some more DA awesomeness

Hey there lads. I lend Greyall a minor hand with one of his fabulous ilustrations, and in a completely disproportionate show of gratitude he asked me to choose the theme for his final commision on this fine thread:

It will be an Unforgiven. Based on a detail of the cover of the 4th ed codex. Once the ilustration is up, there will be virtual cookies for the ones that find out in what part of the cover this source of inspiration is. So keep looking that thread, is worth every page!

You can thank him and take a look at the whole thread HERE, were theres more awesome pieces to behold.

I was a little conflicted about the right hand being so plain, but I ended up leaving it like that, mainly because I couldn't think of a pattern to insert there, but also because it's the underside of the gauntlet. Also, he'll look much plainer coloured, since every decoration that has that fine shadow around it is bas-relief, hence "sculpted" on the black plate. Which means that, apart from the knees, rivets, the written strip near the belt and the lanterns, his legs are all black.

Well, that's another reason why this is an excellent drawing: when people imagine it in color it could be in a number of (equally legit) ways. The engravings of the upper thigh for example, they could be metal-plated with silver, bronze or gold. The gauntlet could be just black or dark green (a reference to the Chapter) of white (a reference to the DW).

The thing is that color can pronounce the detail of plain areas of the figure (be it 2-D or 3-D). I've done something similar with my Terminator Chaplain (the pic is in my Disciples link) and painted the base of the gauntlet green. Although this particular area was detail free (there are some rivets actually ;)) the different color is making it stand out!

just my 2c.
