IA chapter: Emperor’s Spears

http://i1067.photobucket.com/albums/u424/ScottishSmurf96/imagesCAFABOUJ.jpg

Origins: created in the third founding. In the wake of Abaddon’s second black crusade the High Lords of Terra agreed that they needed a chapter that specialises in fighting traitor marines.

The Emperor’s spear’s home is a planet located in Segmentum Obscurus, calixis sector, subsector golgenna reach, and is called Spheris Secundus.

Planetary DataGalactic Position: 52/34/CS/NNE.

Satellites: Three moons, one is home of Arx Spiculum (spear fortress)

Planetary Governor: Queen Lachryma III.

Economy: Chips or Lumps - In the mines and villages of Sepheris

Secundus life revolves around endless mining, to the point where chips and lumps of ore are sometimes used as a default currency.

Principle Exports: Sepheris Secundus is the largest exporting planet in the Calixis Sector. Without its massive exports of ore, metals and fuel, the Trade of the Calixis Sector could not function. Mirror Shield. Used by the Royal Scourges on Sepheris Secundus. The shield is a large rectangular shape that will cover about two thirds of a human sized body. The shield is made from layers of stained glass, a material used in large quantities by the barons of Sepheris Secundus, this gives the shield a mirrored effect that has been known to repel las-weapon shots of a low strength.

Principle Imports: Sepheris Secundus relies on imports of food from the sector's agri worlds.

Imperial Guard Recruitment: Its vast population makes it a potential supplier of Imperial Guard recruits, although a relatively small proportion of the population would be suitable because of universally poor health, along with the risk of exposing the subjugated masses to the possibility of life outside the mines.

Emperor’s spears recruitment: those who show potential are taken by the marines to their fortress monastery on one of the planets moons. (The recruits are mostly taken from the nobles with a few exceptions)

The Emperor’s spears interfere little with the planets politics, but they had agreements with the planetary governors to give them a fraction of their export in return for a parade through the planets streets once year to keep the populace in line. The sight of these marines is enough to quell any thoughts of a revolution.

The Emperor’s spears due to close ties with the mechanicum have been given the right to house a forge that produces Mk6 power armour and experimental ammunition in their fortress. This combined with the resources given to them by the planetary governor makes The Emperors Spears a very well equipped force.

Organisation: The Emperor’s Spears loosely follow the codex. They believe that it is a guideline and not set in stone. One unique aspect of their organisation is that the first company has 300 hundred members. 100 Stern guards, 100 vanguards who are referred to as ‘The Blade’ and 100 terminators who are referred to as ‘The Tip’.

The rest of the chapter follow the organisation of the codex and are referred to as ‘The Haft’. The Emperors Spears do not have librarians as they follow the ‘Edict of Nikaea’ strictly.

Combat doctrine: The Emperor’s spears specialise in fighting traitor space marines. They are very efficient at boarding actions and every marine is trained in the use of specialised bolter shells, like those stern guards use. (For table top each squad can use one volley of special ammunition a game).

One notable battle was the fight for Arx Spiculum, a Portion of Abbadons 4th Black Crusade was in position to attack Spheris Secundus. The Emperor’s Spears had a colossal void battle with the traitors before they managed to deploy on the moon where Arx Spiculum is located. As the void war continued (every company committed in space) only the aspirants and chapter serfs remained fighting desperately to hold off the 7000 khorne berserkers that had been landed. In space the Tip had boarded the enemy flagship whilst two companies rushed back to Arx Spiculum. The enemy flagship ‘Ironsoul’ was destroyed by the Tip and after that the heretic fleet turned tail and fled, they were chased by the chapter’s ships until they were destroyed. When the 3rd and 8th company reached Arx Spiculum they had found much of the chapter serfs and aspirants massacred. They found the last fighters holding the last of the berserkers off from a secured position in an armoury. The traitors were mowed down by mass fire form the 3rd company and finished off by a charge of the 8th.

Beliefs: The only thing notable is the strict adherence to the ‘Edict of Nikaea’ they venerate the Emperor and Dorn.

Geneseed: The Emperor’s Spears gene legacy comes from the Imperial fists.

Battle cry: “We are the extension of the Emperors will; we shall drive fear in our enemy’s hearts! For we are the Emperor’s Spears, cast into the void to reap death and destruction against his foes.

This is cried out by the Commander before the battle begins, and is repeated as a chant until the order to fire or charge is issued.

C&C and improvements are most welcome :P

I've always found the concept of marines specialising in fighting certain enemies a bit of an... odd? concept. Does this mean they train exclusively in anti-marine tactics? And is this to the detriment of their ability to fight other enemies, like everything other than Chaos?

Also, what happens to marines found to have psychic potential? Do they just suppress their powers or are they dealt with another less savoury manner?

It appears you used the Dark Heresy planet generator. While a lot of fun and very useful, it should be edited extensively for use, especially as a Chapter Homeworld. For one thing, you don't have to be limited to the Calixis Sector, you can choose anywhere. Secondly, certain parts like the Imperial Guard recruitment should be removed entirely. I'm pretty sure that's a contradiction, having the two of them recruit from the same world.

But mostly, I just want to warn that you should be careful adding fluff to a canon Chapter. Yes, we know nothing more than their colors and name, and will likely never know more than that, but there is always the possibility that someone, somewhere, will do with it as you have in a codex, novel, or article. If that ever does happen, you will find yourself with canon conflict.

If none of these things bother you, however, carry on as you wish.

Specialization in specific enemies is the same as specialization of tactics and strategies. Take the Imperial Fists, with their preference to siege warfare. It's the same as saying they specialize in fighting a certain enemy, a fortress. And it's not like the Imperial Fists have any detriment fighting any other kind of warfare.

Anyone shouting this during a battle is liable to be subject to a change of status (Read: Death). It is a bit too much of a moutful for a battle cry, which are usually succinct and catchy.

We do not yield! is a decent example.

It does say that the words are spoken prior to a battle, not during.

Sssh, I'm supposed to be working for a living ^_^

We still don't know how and by whom was the Edict canceled.

If I was the Chaos Lord in charge of this force (pun intended), then I would use these 7.000 Berzerkers to slaughter everything on board of the Spear's ships and then send them planetside, but if you want it this way...

Nonessential.

The chances of someone using official Chapter are practically the same like someone using random DIY name.

*SIGH*

(yes, it was very loud)

How long is it since I and others have had this discussion in Amicus? Imperial Fists aren't siege specialists. No, thanks to certain attributes(tenacity, stubborness, meticulous planning) the Imperial Fists are better suited for sieges and urban warfare. That's all.

It's matter of attributes and preferences rather than proper specialization.

And specialization in fighting traitor marines is silly. The Chaos Marine, generally speaking, is your better in almost every way.

The first bit can just be summed up by saying they're siege specialists. Whether it's because they're trained for it or naturally excel at it makes no difference.

As for the second bit, specialization in fighting something doesn't make you superior over that something, it just means that there's something about you that lends to such battles more than others. A specialization in fighting Orks, for instance, might just mean that the Chapter has a greater working knowledge of how they think and act than others.

It comes from the penchant of the Legio Imperial Fists for siege warfare, so it's an understandable mistake to make.

The key fact to remember is that what became the Imperial Fists Chapter were those veterans who couldn't find it in themselves to be anything other than Imperial Fists.
