THE ASTARTES PRAESES

The Astartes Praeses is the name given to a group of twenty Space Marine Chapters founded with the express purpose of guarding the regions surrounding the Eye of Terror. These Chapters are the Imperium’s first line of defense against Chaos invasions from within the Eye, valiantly standing against the traitor hordes before reinforcements can arrive. It is in the pages of Mythos Angelica Mortis that the twenty Chapters are mentioned, but the ancient tome fails to identify them.

THE JUDGED

The Judged were those Chapters fallen under the judgment of Saint Basillius after the passage of Warp storm Dionys and evidence of mutation within the ranks of these Chapters in M37. The Chapter Masters of these Chapters agreed to embark on a redemptive crusade into the Eye of Terror. Barely half of the Adeptus Astartes among the Judged returned, and many of those left behind were horribly altered, caught in thrall to the very forces they had sought to purge. The survivors, upon returning and proving their purity to the Inquisition, revealed that Saint Basillius was an apostle of Chaos and, led by the Vorpal Swords Chapter under Chapter Master Konvak Lann, purged Saint Basillius and his followers, removing every monument and record of his existence.

THE PENTARCHY OF BLOOD

The Pentarchy of Blood was a group of five Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes that were convened by the High Lords of Terra in 860.M33. These Chapters were tasked with destroying eleven Chapters judged Traitoris Perdita for their actions during the War of the False Primarch. The Pentarchy of Blood systematically destroyed the traitorous Chapters and their homeworlds.

Many hobbyists have taken the time to create their own Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, often developing their Chapters in the Liber Astartes forum.

Official

In some cases, hobbyists develop a homegrown version of an official un(der)-developed Chapter. Occasionally, a hobbyist will create a DIY Chapter and GW will later use the same name (or even, apparently, abrogate the DIY Chapter into the canon). More often, a hobbyist or group of hobbyists will take a Chapter that GW has provided little or no information on, and then flesh it out.

SUBMITTING A DIY OF THE ADEPTUS ASTARTES

Note that this tabula is intended to be an index of all Space Marine organizations, including the legions, chapters, warbands, etc. In order to avoid confusion, all of the various types of organizations will be referenced as a "DIY" in the following.

The requirements are:

DIY name
founding in which the Chapter was created, if known (either founding number or date)
gene-seed, if known (the legion from which the Chapter is ultimately descended)
predecessor, if known (the actual Chapter whose gene-seed was used in the creation of the Chapter)
applicable (and brief) special notes for the listing (e.g., Astartes Praeses, Maelstrom Warders, renegade, etc.)
page on the Internet with the DIY information
one of the following:
- 1 HQ and 2 Troops squads, completely painted (tabletop gaming level)
- 1 Troops squad, completely painted (tabletop gaming level), and a paragraph about the DIY
- painter image (or similar 2D rendering) and a 1,000+ word article or collection of articles

The "page on the Internet" requirement is nothing more than some place with the presentation of your DIY. Ideally this will be a personal blog or an article here at the B&C, though a discussion in the main forums, an article at another website, or an album dedicated to your DIY in your gallery also work. If you have your own web page dedicated to your DIY, that is also fine. Note that we'll only provide a link to one location, so if you have multiple locations that collectively present your DIY in its entirety, ensure that one of them links to all of the others and use that one as the page to which the tabula will link.

The painted miniatures or picture must depict the normal color scheme of the DIY and any distinguishing markings (such as Chapter badges). Note that the intent of the painted miniatures or picture is to give other players a good visual cue to the appearance of your rank and file troops, so a DIY Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes should be in power armour and not belong to some specialist organization with distinct paint schemes/markings (so no chaplains, apothecaries, or similar models, please).

The "paragraph" requirement (coupled with the single mini) means a "paragraph" such as is provided for a number of the Chapters presented in Codex: Space Marines. This only has to include two or three sentences that provide a brief description of the DIY. You don't need to flesh the DIY out in exacting detail.

The "1,000 word article or collection of articles" requirement (coupled with a painter image) allows players to submit an article similar to an Index Astartes article (though any format may be used), a series of shorter articles, a short story, or other written work of sufficient length that provides information about the DIY.

Note that all of these are the minimum requirements, and players are encouraged to provide as much additional information and images as they want.

Simply post a reply to this discussion including the requirement information (cut and paste the information in the code box below). We'll add eligible submissions to the tabula. If a submission is determined to be ineligible for some reason, we'll contact you and provide feedback, trying to work towards a solution that will bring your submission into eligibility so that we can add it. Replies will be removed once acted upon in order to keep the tabula neat and tidy.

Last (interim :wink: ) update as I rebuild this tabula. I've seen that some people have noticed me working, viewing the topic as I create new posts (that are now invisible), so I've created all of the posts that I'm going to be using. The result of this, for you, is that you won't notice new posts from the Adeptus Astartes page. All you'll see is that this is the latest post. What you might see is posts before this one as I move things around.

There are three main goals I'm working towards as I rebuild the Tabula Astartes:

Data reliability - Through the years, there have been multiple times where I've accidentally deleted lines and had to rebuild them. And now there is the problem with the URLs to certain Lexicanum pages. So having a backup for each entry helps mitigate this problem. If an error is made, there will always be a second copy of a page as a backup for speedier recovery (and for data validation, of sorts).
Speed of navigation - I've found that navigating through the tabulae can become ponderous and slow. I realized that the graphics are a huge contributor to this, so I'm going to be removing the graphics, including the post header images, the "Official" and "Unofficial" headers, and the spacers (that you can't see). Everything will be pure BBCode from now on, speeding things up a bit.
Future proofing - I don't know if we'll ever be truly future "proof," but I've built in a lot of placeholders in case Games Workshop ever expands upon the lore. We probably won't need most of these, but having them just in case is better than not having them in the eventuality that they are ever needed. For example, I've built additional founding posts in case GW ever moves the storyline forward and gives us one or more additional foundings. I've also built a horde of placeholders for groups (a category I'm adding, which includes things like the Astartes Praeses, Adeptus Vaelarii, Judged, etc.). I expect we'll see additional official groups in the lore, so I've built quite a few of those. These placeholders are invisible (to you), but can be populated and turned visible if they are ever needed.

If you view this tabula while I'm working, you may see some of the work going on. I won't bore you with the details, suffice to say that it involves a pretty big spreadsheet and several dozen man-hours (so far). Internal links may be broken as I'm rebuilding, but all of the links to files (both here at the B&C as well as to external sites such as Lexicanum) will work.

Once all of the work is finished, this post will disappear, just to keep things neat and tidy. :wink:

Not sure how the Tabula handles Alpha-Legion-Masquerading-as-Ultramarines-Successors - sorry if this causes any headaches!

I'd be happy enough being listed under 22nd founding and Ultramarine geneseed, because that's bascially what the Imperium thinks the Knights Oracular are. :happy.:

I've added the Knights Oracular to the tabula. I've listed them as a 22nd founding Ultramarines Successor with the note that they are Alpha Legion impostors. In both the 22nd founding and Ultramarines entries, they are under the "Possible" heading. They are also included in the Alpha Legion entry (the first Chapter/warband in that entry!). The DIY Chapters entry shows them as an Alpha Legion warband with the note that they are posing as a 22nd founding Ultramarines successor.
