A game for civillians

So i'm going to a game night at my fiancé's sorority and i'm planning to bring 2 mini armies as one of the games we will play. none of the girls have heard of warhammer so they need to be pretty simple lists.

I've settled on space wolves and grey knights as the two armies.

I'm wondeirng what armies you guys would suggest. should i go by points, say 500 or 750 or maybe get an equal number of units.

I think they need to be interesting, varied and different from each other, ie no power armour vs power armour, it'd be good to hae termies for the gk. Also maybe having 1 big exciting unit/model each, ie dreadknight or thunderwolves.

what do you guys think? any hints about running the novice game?

cheers

lol warhammer at a sorority.... it boggles the mind!

I dunno.. I think the Wolves are very testosterone-driven, compared to all the other marine armies. I'd think about bringing a contrast, but something visually contrasting too, ie not another marine army. I would bring a xenos like the eldar/DE for lithe, quick playstyles (plus all girls secretly like whips ;P).

My fiancée liked the SoBs when I introduced her to all the armies (once upon a time) but moreso the concept art than the models, which now look outdated. Still an option I'd consider...particularly if introduced as the Adeptica Sororitas.

Oks and tyranids, I wouldn't. The 'nids were a maaaybe due to popular film franchises, but bottom line, they're still gooey bugs, so I wouldn't chance it. Orks are too similar to Wolves in the testosterone/brutish category. Plus they're overdone.

IG maybe, Tau maybe, if enough of them like anime :D. Necrons and Daemons are a wild card IMO. Ultimately, I could be waaay off, being a guy that's played these games for decades. At risk of her flaying me alive, I'd say ask Mav_girl. Girliest 40k player I've ever seen ( and still manages to play a Wolf) and I would assume a girl would know the best course of action for this situation.

I know right? I had to re-read that a few times.

I agree, Nids and orks would probably be a big no, Tau and IG a maybe, Necrons and Daemons a maybe, I would say definitely no to another PA force.

Biggest hitters would probably be Eldar, Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle.

As an Englishman my experiences of a sororitory are girls in negliges and pillow fights and for that reason im saying a small game to get back to the curious nature that these girls always have.

I've seen those "Instructional Videos" too.

On-Topic: KISS

Keep It Simple Stupid :D

It's a sorority, so the chances of experience with wargaming are Bob Hope and No Hope, and Bob's dead.

If it is the case and there is no experience there then don't go in all gung-ho and try to cram them full of rules; demonstrate the basics and use the useful progression of Single Mini -> Unit -> Two/Three Units so that they can see how those rules work and scale up.

Importantly, show them the history and legacy of the universe itself that each unit and character can have a storied history so that it seems less like "boys and their toys".

If you wanted to have a really fun gun that they might enjoy... Why not go for the whole Dark eldar Vs Eldar stint. Play it off as the light and dark side of the coin .. emphasis the whole carnal excessive luxurious nature of body armies. Plus they are both pretty armies, so more of a chance that they will like them. Plus there is lots of females in both armies, so could always push the girl power side of it, going so far as to include Lelith Vs pretty boy Yriel.

That way .. you'll always get to see who are the dirty bad girls and who are the reserved yet secretly kinky one ... :x ... I mean .... to let your mates know ... >.> .... <.<

so here are the two lists i'm looking at doing, any thoughts?

Wolf Lord Hammer, Shield, thunderwolf, wolf

10 wolf guard assorted weapons 2 x belt of russ

10 wolf guard assorted weapons Arjac belt of russ

Lone Wolf Power Fist, Storm Shield, 2 wolves

2 cavalry Axe, 2 shields

Wolf lord Claw, 2 wolves, shield

Librarian,

5 terminators assorted

5 terminators assorted

Landraider

Dreadknight hammer

for someone that might never have heard from anything like tabletop i think those lists are way too complicated. i'd just play the old SW VS DA scenario that GW wrote in 4th edition in which every model of the pack/ unitworks as an independant character so to speak. not only s it easy to use but it's also playing rather fast. there's no need to get into the complicated rules, if one of them might be interested they'll ask for more, if not that's only 20 models + terrain you need to put away again ;)

don't forget that they are space Legolas! chicks dig elves.

on point i think your list is to complicated. i would say do a bare minimum. HQ, 2 troops, and one special "cool" unit. like thunder wolves for us. something like this:

everything moves verry fast in a list like this so it will be over soon. mach it up with something that shoots or is pretty :D like Eldar or tau so they can see both styles. i recommend Eldar since tau has a VERY hard time making a list at this level. Eldar has a lot of cool models at this point level too like walkers. i think they would find that really fun.
