New Paints

Fellow Brothers,

I see a Russ grey and a Fenrisian grey it almost is heresy not using those colors for namesake.

Is it a good color for space wolfs armour or is it the pre heresey color and the new armour color?

I´m partly colorblind and can´t see if the colors are grey or more bleuish and stuff.

So i really dont like the change in color names, when i read bloodred I know its bloodcolor now its hard to make the connection with evil sunz scarlet.

Its really frustrating, I used those colors as reference for everything. :)

My GW was giving out cards today for various paint plans, using the new paints for different models. I saw the space wolf one. You won't be happy if you're a purist or have the current scheme from the codex.

The new paint plan looks nothing like what's in the codex color pages. It's a much darker blue hue to the armor. It still has some grey tones, but they are so muted, you almost can't tell that it has any at all.

So apparently we have a new paint scheme.

Thank god I panic ordered all the paint I need to finish my Wolves, using the WD Thunderwolf paint plan, before they discontinued them.

Edit: That paint plan calls for 50/50 Shadow Grey/ Space Wolf Grey as the base coat, and the first highlight is pure Space Wolf Grey, and the top highlight is 50/50 Space Wolf Grey/ Bleached Bone.

Oh.

Hmmm, maybe you guys can grab the 'old' paint from online stores, assuming they have some kind of a stockpile, before they are all gone.

Having a patchy force wouldn't be what I'd want.... :)

I've always painted my space wolves in the following order: prime black, base shadow grey, slap on devlan mud. It gives them a dark and dirty worn out look. Come to find out GW's new method is similar to mine but adding layers after shading with Nulin Oil. They're definitely going for a more darker theme to the wolves.

This is just MY take on the new stuff-- I'll try the recommended paint scheme on a test mini or two. If I don't like it, I'll use Vallejo's Game Color line and pick up more Sombre Grey (Shadow Grey) and Wolf Grey (Space Wolf Grey). I know that some people have voiced their opinions regarding Vallejo matching GW colors, but I think those Vallejo colors are actually pretty close to the previous GW paint colors. I'm curious to see what the new color, Fenrisian Grey compares to. I'd like to hope that it is the equivalent of my 50/50 mix of Shadow Grey and Space Wolf Grey.

Here's another idea I'm just throwing out there- I wonder if GW reworked their entire paint line because of the similarities with the Vallejo Game Color line. Vallejo purposely made the names very close to the GW equivalent, with the idea that GW couldn't really sue them for making "Bloody Red" instead of GW's "Blood Red." Now, ALL of GW's paints will have a special Games Workshop Name affiliated with them! No longer "Blood Red," but instead, there's "Wild Rider Red." They can copyright that now!

Just my 2 creds.

I think GW having a new range might have been for a few reasons.

As you say, the Vallejo aping issue can now be dealt with.

GW goes to liquid pigment, as per P3.

I think it is from a different paint company too, so maybe cheaper or something awkward happened with GW and the old one.

And it is like rebooting a product sales tactic.

Established armies - 'must rush out and buy old paints' thereby giving GW at least the same amount of money for that same paint that would have taken years to get and dudes might even over-capitalise on it.

GW win.

New paint creates a stir 'must buy whatever GW sells, it is so cool' and so dudes buy paint that they otherwise were not going to buy, as they had all the old stuff they needed. I am talking about equivalent colours such as Blood Red and Wild Rider.

They come out with new products 'oh I need white foundation base!

As GW was selling a product that had worse bang-for-buck than the Vallejo equivalent, or was inferior in technology and quantity to the P3 range, this is just an all round win choice for GW.

Same here, i am totally colour blind ( every shade) its annoying

Hello brother

I´m sorry to hear that, for you it must be even harder.

Maybe there are some paint chards where all colors are on it and some explaination for what the color could be used.

With so many colors i just dont know where to put on what and always needs to ask friends.

I write every color I use down so I know which color I used for what so my whole army has the same color leatherbags.

Goodluck

I am very like you, in so much as i have a note book top write my guides in.

Should i ever mix a colour i use a plastic syringe to measure to make sure i get it right!!

On the plus sidei got gifted the whole range of the new colours!! i personally really like the wolf related colours!!

I am intending on waiting this one out but I do have another 5 vehicles and about 30 odd marines to base let alone paint and I have a grand total of 1 pot of Adeptus Battlegrey and a max of 2 of other grey types (Space Wolf, Shadow, Fortress and Codex) - also I hear ya on the name change point, especially with Boltgun Metal hell my dad has pots that are still working (mainly due to him using the properly and watering down/not letting them dry out) after 10-20 years, he has the best part of 4k of Marines and 3k Imp. Guard (Catachans) to finish painting and a coupla years back he just decided to switch to his other paints (Tamiya) which he has an even longer history of using and knowledge that they're a lot cheaper, and last longer (although he does prefer the realistic look especially with his guardsmen so will often refference current/past jungle conflicts for color schemes/equipment size and design), just my 2 pence (or 2 cents for ye across the pond).

No need to worry about running out of Badab black and Devlin Mud (two most important :) ) washes. The new ones give the same effect. If anything they are better! The wash really runs into the recesses and doesn't pool on flat areas like the old ones while as the same time it does darken/shade flat areas.

Witchcraft in a paint pot!!
