My Space Wolves

I've been looking for an online space to use as a project log for a while, and rather fiddle with a blog no one will visit I figured here was as a good as place as any. My desire to paint is fueled entirely by my own ego, so if I can even get a little feedback its good to keep me going

I've been working on the army on and off for the last three years and taught myself to paint pretty well that time span. The first years models have since been trashed, but everything there after has started to look pretty good.

The bulk of my army: My Grey Hunters (led by Rune Priest)

Current work in progress...

Every Company needs its Wolf Lord.

My vehicle pool is stuck at work and serving as desk ornaments. I'm going to see about getting them home so I can do some photography.

any chance of a tut for the grey as it looks like the shade iam aiming for

It's literally just codex gray over black primer. Badab black for shading and fortress gray for highlights.

I add a bit of 1:1 white:fortress highlight on extreme edges for a little extra pop.

Small update. Got all the gold, red and grey stubbed in and ready for highlights. Plus, figured out the cloak. I wanted to paint it red originally, but the super-nerd in me couldn't accept something that's supposed to be an "ice troll" could be red. I certainly didn't want to go with the godawful teal GW used, so I settled on a cold white.

They look awesome brother! ;)

Any chance on a quick tutorial on the glowing effects? Plasma and Runic Power?

Thanks!

I don't really have a step by step process for it, I just fiddle with it when I get it looks good enough.

The key to doing that is to realize that the light goes into what are normally shadowed areas. To that end, I use lots of blue and white paints watered down and often mixed together (the three colours i use are regal blue, ice blue, and white). Because it's watered down, it goes into the recesses and looks like light is shining on it.

For a plasma gun, you can get some pretty neat effects just by painting it blue and washing it with some really, really watery space wolves grey.

For illuminated areas, I paint something as if its un-illiuminated and then wash it with a very watered down blue paint (like, 80% water). I'll do this a few times until it looks the way I want and then I will hit it with blue highlights. The brightness of the blue depends on the closeness to the lightsource - it gets whiter the closer it is.

I realize this is kind of scary to do - as it means painting something completely and then potentially destroying it. If you have an old model you don't care for anymore, you can experiment with it.

He has a face! Armor highlights next. After that I'll paint the base and I'll be done.

Chose to go with white hair and painted it the same way I did the cape. Helped a lot in tying it the model.

I've never had so much trouble painting eyes. The menacing glare wasn't what I was going for but it works.

also I have never had so much trouble getting a weapon to stay straight. <_< I over-bent it tonight, in hopes it would settle straight in the morning.

This took me longer then I liked to get back to this (on account of having my job unexpectedly downsized ;)), but the Wolf Lord is done! Plus some Fenrisian Wolf Buddies!

Yeah, finished my Wolf Lord (and loveable Wolf Buddies!)

The second dog isn't shading well. Will probably go and touch him up.

Haha. That's tickled me. Should get some done myself.

Hahah! No problem! I need to get back to it soon myself. I want to finish my thunderwolf pack. After that, all that's left for my army is a Thunderpriest Pack and some Long Fangs (I've never actually run them...).

I finally got to run my fully painted army in a 1500 point game today. First time I've ever been able to drop a 1500 point army on the table and was really satisfying. I was playing my buddy's Imperial Guard army in a dawn of war deployment, fighting for killpoints. He also a great painter and just finished painting his force, and it was really cool to watch to well painted armies clash like that.

Left half my army in reserve while the rest of it positioned itself behind cover. My Wolf Scouts ruled the day, arriving turn 2 and blowing up two Leman Russes with a round of fire and a multi-assault. I had a pair of land speeders too, and they both survived the deep strike and blew up some chimeras with their melta guns! That never happens!

The Thunder Lord + Cavalry saw some action against a squad of ogryns. It was his last gambit, and what a terrifying one! I thought I was the Lord was done for when he charged, but the thunder lord inflicted 5(!!!) wounds before they could even start swinging, killing two of them. With less attacks, I narrowly survived their punching, allowing my Thundercav with the S10 hammer to mop up the rest.

I ended up tabling him, for the first time ever.

Also: No I didn't go and buy three dreadnoughts from Forge World to do a conversion. I did buy the two, one to stay the same and one for conversion into a Bjorn. But one was damaged, so FW replaced it free of charge. I got to keep the pieces of the busted one and used them for conversion.
