Skabfang's Imperial Templar

Skabfang

Recommended Posts

Hi all, Skabfang here, long time lurker, first time poster ;)

I am typically an Ork player, but I managed to pick up some second hand Templars when I brought the AOBR set to start my Ork army. That kind of went on hold when I found a Space Marine Mega Force during a holiday to Jakarta for a steal (that means I found it in a GW store there for way below my local prices given a particularly strong dollar... woot!).

First up, I have a dilemma, I like Templars, but I also have a bit of a liking for Imperial Fists, specifically a force with Captain Lexandro D'Arquebus at the helm after reading the Inquisition War trilogy. So what is an enterprising but slightly cash strapped (read: struggling to justify an expensive hobby to the missus) 40k fanatic to do? What ever I want haha!

How I am going to manipulate the fluff

Now I know the fluff bunnies will call me out on this saying I cannot mix heraldry unless doing a pre-heresy army. To that I say that 40k is wide open to interpretation; I believe that it isn't out of the realm of possibility that a mixed Fists/Templar task force could be led by Lex as Captain and a counts as Librarian for Inquisitor Jaq Draco. In this case, the heraldry of the Templars is going to be displayed over the Fists livery. I am going to include a black/white Templar shoulder pad on most of the marines.

Problem number 2, how do include Meh'lindi and the squat who's name alludes me at the moment. I will figure that out another time.

Painting

I would really like some C&C on this paint scheme, here's the recipe.

1, Iyanden Darksun base coat

2, heavy Gryphonne Sepia wash

3, Sunburst Yellow layer leaving some of the darksun/sepia mix at bottom

4, Bad Moon Yellow layer to the top of armour plates

5, heavy highlighting with Bleached Bone

6, extreme edge highlight of Skull White

I have struggled with yellow for a long time now, but I think I have found a recipe I can do without too many problems. It isn't the tidiest I have seen, but I think it's very close to my limit considering the damage my right arm has sustained (writing/painting). Here is my first test model, just a Missile Launcher trooper from AOBR:

This model will not be used in my initial army, but I am happy with the paint job so I may consider him for a Devestator Squad if I decide to incorporate one later down the track.

Next post will be my planned army list.

WIP army list

I have play tested this 1750 pts Fists force 5 times with 3 wins and 1 draw (the loss and draw were against Tyranids). This is more or less what I will be basing this force on.

This will require some mucking with so I can add a Librarian etc, but the general theme will follow this pattern.

Please excuse the lack otf points costs, I don't have my codex or actual list with me.

HQ

Captain Beatstick (Lysander)

Elites

5 man Assault Terminator squad with Thunder Hammers and Stormshields

Vanilla Dreadnaught with Multi Melta and Heavy Flamer in Drop Pod

Troops

10 man Tactical Squad, Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon, Combi Plasma/Power Fist, in Drop Pod

10 man Tactical Squad, Melta Gun, Multi Melta, Combi Melta/Power Fist, in Drop Pod

10 man Tactical Squad, Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon, Combi Plasma/Power Fist, in Rhino

Fast Attack

Landspeeder with Multi Melta and Heavy Flamer

3x Attack Bikes with Heavy Bolters

Heavy Support

Land Raider Redeemer with Multi Melta

Tactics

The Landraider with Termies typically starts on the table with Rhino and bikes. The Dread and melta tac squad drop on first turn and nuke the biggest armour threats available. Everything else mops up and takes objectives. Simple really, and it seems relatively effective from limited play testing, as long as I don't roll a 1 on first turn dangerous terrain tests with the Land Raider haha (which coincidentally is why I lost my game against the bugs).

Next up, first actual marine painted!

First marine painted

Here is the sergeant for my first Drop pod mounted Tac Squad. He is armed with a Combi Melta and Power Fist. I think I have kept the scheme of this guy very close to the test figure in the first post.

I am aiming to paint one marine every 1-2 days. That might seem slow, but I am very busy with work and life in general ;)

Please excuse the craptastic lighting, it doesn't show any of the layering. This guy is my first to incorporate the Templars heraldry. C&C welcome, I have a thick skin.

I quite like the paint scheme to be honest. I think the pure skull white highlights are a little too much, but other than that I like the style. I also like the incorporation of the templar stuff with the yellow. May not be exactly 'fluff' perfect, but if it works for you, then that's awesome. Besides, could always be a pre heresy/heresy era force led my Sigismund anyway.

Either way a nice start. If I get more time later, will post a comment on your battles.

Thanks for the kind comments guys, I honestly thought I was going to be scathed heh.

I had thought about having the force led by Sigismund, but I am struggling to convert the power armour to pre-heresy suits. Is Siggy still alive and kicking? Could he be leading a modern 'Imperial Templar' force? I like the ring to that by the way ;) I am not much of a stickler for fluff as I believe that at least having a fully painted and cohesive force is a major victory for me. I don't have a steady hand, nerve damage ftl :cuss

I will work on the highlighting, the truth is I have been struggling to get the yellow to work without doing it that way. I justified my use of extreme white by having the force fight in extreme sunlight.

I do have two pots of the old school yellow ink which I have been tempted to paint over what I have already got. That would then make the yellows richer and remove the extreme white highlighting. I could try it on my test mini (the one with Missile Launcher). What are your thoughts?

I need to also start thinking about how the hell I am going to go about painting my vehicles/drop pods. How do others manage smooth base coats of yellow over such large flat surfaces? Maybe I need to invest in a spray gun.

Sigismund isn't too bad to convert/make. I myself used the Black Templar Helbrect as a base model and worked from there. If you want to see more, check out my WIP thread in my sig. Sigismund as you might expect is not around these days (I think), though I can't remember what happened to him.

For the highlighting, you could either use your yellow ink, though the problem with that is when you run out, its a pain to get some more. Other options might be gryphonne sepia, but I just realized, that's been discontinued due to the new paint range (which reminds me I need to stock up). I tend to use sepia to one things down, just making sure you dilute it with either some medium or water.

As for tanks and large surfaces, a spray gun is great (I'm told). I have a spray gun, but it doesn't work for some reason, so I use brushes for everything. The trick I've found is lots of thin layers, thinning your paints in order to get nice coverage, and minimize the 'brush' strokes from the yellow. Hope that helps.

I like the idea, but think you may have gone a bit overboard with the White.

Also, that Power Fist has a seriously large mold line running down it which really detracts from the otherwise nice work.

Other than that I hope to see more :P

I didn't actually realise that GW were replacing the old line of washes etc, I thought the new product was in addition to. Must confirm this and stock up on Gryphonne Sepia, still got a lot of work to do on my orks and that is critical! Cheers for the heads up.

As for the white on the mini's, do you mean the highlights? Those pictures were in nasty lighting and don't really show what it actually looks like. or do you mean too much white in general? I wanted initially for my veterans to have white helmets with white robes, opinions? Perhaps I need red helmets. Or should I change the colour of the robes?

Option 1, I was thinking perhaps yellow armour (obviously) with black robes/tabards, templar shoulder pad black and white, fists shoulder pad yellow with red trim. Or do i dispense with the Fists shoulder pad and go for the previously mentioned "Imperial Templar" idea? I would do white helmets for my veterans with this scheme.

Final option would be the same as the sergeant is now with white robes and a red helmet. Templar shoulder pad black/white and other shoulder pad black/yellow.

Yellow, black, white, red... it all goes together well, just need to get my balance right.

What do you think? Might need to do another couple of test mini's and see how they turn out.

As for the mold lines, they are the bane of my existence! I will attack it with a fervor that has not been seen since... what am I talking about again? I'll fix it at some point. mental note to self, check the other mini's for mold lines.

Nice start on your Imperial Fists ( or is that Imperial Templars ? ) . Look forward to seeing more.

It's interesting how you put that BattleBrotherJohn, when I read 'Imperial Templars' it struck a chord with me. I think that's how I am going to proceed... thanks :)

Time for an update, I haven't been idle, this will be a long one.

First things first. You all remember my Veteran Sergeant above, well you were right.

Old Sgt and Marine with too much white + new stuff in pic

I was very impressed, just the addition of Cssandora shading and Lamentors glazing has made the world of difference. Please provide some C&C on this update.

WIP's

Next up, my interpretation of Captain Lexandro D'Arquebus in Terminator Armour. In game terms he obviously counts as Lysander.

(please note that I will be creating a greatly simplified version of 'Lex' wearing his Power Armour and armed with his Bolter)

Next there is my Librarian in Power Armour who is my stand in for Inquisitor Jaq Draco until I find a more suitable model

Command squad time

Work started on my Standard, took influence from the Marine Codex

I hope to bring out a little drama with painting, as well as the missing limbs.

Brother Maximus, Company Champion

Note the Imperial Fist icon, his faith will count as combat shield

Love the Grey Knight kits :D

Termies

Terminator with Heavy Flamer

Terminator with Missile Launcher

What's next?

Other than finishing the painting of the rank and file, once that's done I plan to add to the 'characters' as follows:

1, I have a Venerable Dreadnaught that will be taking pride of place as the centrepiece of the army. I am going to 'pretend' he is my Chapter Master, toying with the name of Nebuchadnezzer. Thoughts?

2, Find a suitable replacement Librarian that looks more like Jaq Draco from the artwork, but doesn't look out of place in a marine army.

3, Start work on Meh'lindi. I plan to create four versions of her which I will use against different opponents; A, Callidus Assassin model (against anyone), B, Genestealer (against bugs), C, humanoid (against Guard), and D, Eldar (against Eldar, obviously).

Speaking of bugs, I have begun work on enlisting for my new bug army ;)

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z285/ftevolution/Imperial%20Templar/NewBugArmy.jpg

Should make a good Hormagaunt, but he wasn't too impressed with my attempts to base him on a $2 coin XD

C&C more than welcome, please have at it :D

Forgot to add, have been feverishly painting. Base coated 45 models in Iyanden Darksun, got so sick of it that I did all of the base coats on the following 12 models, all ready for washing.

Looking forward to painting this sergeant.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z285/ftevolution/Imperial%20Templar/TacSquadWIP3.jpg

Also this marine, he has fashioned a replacement shoulderpad from an Orc Nob's jaw protector... thing...

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z285/ftevolution/Imperial%20Templar/TacSquadWIP4.jpg

Very busy with work recently, but will update when I can.

C&C appreciated.

(just quietly want to say, having found a yellow recipe I like has really invigorated me back into the hobby, and the community here is just inspiring).

Peace, through superior fire power!

Have a good night all, I need some sleep XD

I think the washing and glazing do make a world of difference. I thought your initial coloring looked too washed out and not yellow enough. I think doing your original scheme with the washing looks great and really ties in all the highlighting and layering. Like you conversions too! Keep it up!
