Wolf Guard joining Grey Hunter packs. Elite or troop choice?

When you add Wolf Guard to your army roster, you are purchasing them as an Elite slot. They remain as a single pack up until you go to deploy your army (read you have already finished writing your army list at this point, accounting for FOC issues). When you go to deploy your army, assume that at that point you split up your single WG Elite unit and disperse it into your GH/BC packs. They remain an Elite choice on your army list because they were purchased as such and not purchased as a GH/BC pack upgrade.
If i take 3 wolf guard to lead GH packs or bloodclaw packs do they take up an elite slot? Or do they Take up a troop choice? Or do when they join the packs are they truely part of that choice and take up no slot of their own?

To expand on what MeatGrinder said:

You buy Wolf Guard as ELITES. Then you distribute them into other packs as you wish. Any not joining another pack will remain as an ELITE choice unit.

Once a Wolf Guard has joined a Grey Hunters pack, for instance, he becomes a TROOPS choice. Even if the rest of his Grey Hunters are mown down and he is left alive, he will still be a TROOPS choice, and so can grab Objectives for you.

Likewise with a WG joining a Long Fangs pack, if he were the last one remaining, he would still be a HEAVY SUPPORT choice. Not that this is a good or bad thing <_<

But to perhaps get to the intent of what I think you were saying, even if you only use your WG are sergeants, you still have to use an ELITES slot to do so. Meaning you have less room for Dreadnoughts or Wolf Scouts, for example.

You have to credit Phil Kelly. (I believe) The SW Codex was the first one to have this "buy and split up" mechanic, and the idea has since been grabbed by other books (Necrons) and rumors about the same idea appear in future books are popping up.

Also, wasn't Logan the first 5th Edition HQ that forced a change in the FoC slot of another unit in the Codex?
