Do you name your characters?

Ok so I was playing with my best mate the other day who ironically enough fields a DIY Dark angels succesor chapter, and throughout both our armies we have models that we have specifically named, e.g. He has a lascanon armed tac marine that he afectionatly calls Azulon who has been responsible for some of my major headaches.

I myself have models in my army that have there own sagas such as:

My rune priest who summoned a bolt of lightning from the heavens to destroy a unit of eldar pathfinders in cover (Yeah I know it sounds hard to believe but i kid you not 6 hits 5 wounds 5 kills, in cover!) and earned himself the name of Gunter Stormcrow.

Or more recently my lone wolf in TDA with a thunderhammer and storm shield who in one game killed 3 Deadnoughts (2 Ironclad 1 regular) single handed and has therefore earned his name

Olaf Slayer of the Dead.

Now I was wondering if anyone else got really into the fluff (which is one o the main reasons I play wolves cause their so fluffy!) and gives there distinguished models earned names due to there actions on the battlefield.

I would love to hear some of the stories and Sagas of your models if you would like to share.

Also do you believe that a saga has to be earned on the battlefield or do you make up the saga for your characters before hand?

Yes i generally give my units names and once they've done something particularily cool etc i'll give them a name.

Also with my wolves army i'm planning on rotating models so that if i do loose a squad down to one guy and he does something cool i'll make him a lone wolf :D

I also tailor units in my army to play the people i play the most.

My Wolf Lord has Saga of the Beastslayer as i play tyranids and intend on getting him in there to take out the hive tyrant :)

Yes I too name my characters and actually all my troops as well especially if they do well I promote them to wolf guard (well add their name) makes it fun when someone you name does really well and creates their own saga and gives your opponent a name to fear :D

Not a SW player (quite the opposite, in fact) but all the sergeants in my squads are named, as are individual HQs. I think it adds another (albeit small) level to the game: the anguish when one of your named miniatures has to be removed from the board due to death ("No, no, he didn't die. He was just critically injured and knocked out..."), or delight as he stomps the guts out of an enemy character (and if they're named too then it's even better as your character becomes "XXXX, Slayer of YYYY"). That and rivalries can build up between yours and those of your opponents you often face.

I would add honours - and perhaps names - to rank-and-file who performed above and beyond.

I've named a lone Wolf, he burned his way trough 2 wraithlords , an entire squad of wraithguard, made a 30 man squad of conscripts lose combat and chased them of the table, killed Leman Russ tanks, dreads, IC's the works. For his troubles the man has earned the name Mordekaiser.

I have 2 named characters atm;

Grom-Logan count as,survived a few rounds of combat against 3 or 4 def dread,1 something dread(its the ork dread with 4 CCW)

Vladir-took out Ghazghkull in melee

I plan on doing what most people seem to be doing;I'm going to name my IC and those that distinguish themselves and my tanks

When I first started in this glorious hobby, I named everyone of my Space Wolves. I looked up Scandinavian names and started from top to bottom every character, troop, wolf, vehicle had a name. I use to keep track of who killed what, and how they did it. But then that just got to involved. I painted eveyone's name on their base to identify who they were.
I name all characters and I name units/models that preform really well in game/ give them an awesome unique paint job.

i am starting to do the paint job bit as well. i had a WG and GH w/melta hold off a grey knight grand master for 4 turn to win me the game since those 2 guys in PA were a troop :P . painted half there armor as grey knight silver so my buddy would always know who they were!

I love to take names from any type of mythology and history.

- i also like to make up stories and fluff for certain guys before hand, not necessarily all of the guys/units in my armies....but ones that im particularly attatched to. There is no rhyme or reason to that either, usually its just one particular model just looks really good. Like i have this one assault marine that for no particular reason gave him two bolt pistols with ivory handles. Now i dont know why i did this, but I have this whole story and such in my head for this one random model in my army

IronDragon66

My first game of combat patrol with the Wolves earned my Long Fang Sergeant the last name of "Ironhide" ( the squad took 2 necrotoxin missiles and shatterfields at it in turn 1 only losing one man, and lost no more the rest of the game, even though they got into CC with a 10 man unit of Kabalites.) Because of the naming of the squad, the Sergeant earned the name "Kjvar Ironhide".

I do have an Alpha Legion Chaos lord that is named, but I gave him his name before he ever got into a game. I called him "Satanaka Varanus 'The Scaled'". Satanaka used to be my old screen name on here, one I had used for years elsewhere too. Varanus is the Genus name for Monitor Lizards, the closest real thing I could think of to a Hydra. The nickname "the Scaled" just seemed to sound right.

I've named a few others, but those two stick out the most for me. I think I prefer the first method of naming my characters rather than the second. It just seems to add more character to them.

Now if we are talking about naming tanks, EVERY tank I own gets a name, regardless of which army....

Every. Single. Model. I. Own. Pain, suffering, and a big excel spreadsheet. I've got a bunch of fluff, mainly formed of little two sentence blurbs for each model. Some of it is in my horribly outdated Company of the Firefist thread, which I keep trying to update. That'll take a really long time to do.
