Vulkan's helm, I'd say. Maybe we'll finally know what befell the Salamanders after Isstvan.

PS: Good to see Mr. Roberts going for the small heads on Space Marines. Hope that was intended.

PS2: Can someone understand what's that big slab blocking the foremost marine's chest? A thunder hammer's head?

Hmm...I personally don't think it's that secretive, more life a never-before-told tale, like the Lion's true allegiance during the Heresy (which is now being told).

Actually, here's to hoping we do find out what Papa Lizard is up to.

PS: The hanging men/cages in the background are pretty creepy.

Almost positive that it's a book. Looks like you can make out the distinctive edges of the pages. Though, the book is in quite a weird place...

I really, really like the creepy background. Very grimdark looking. Kinda reminds me of the scene from 300 when the Spartans visit that burning village with the tree of dead people. :)

Whilst I am happy to see more salamander books, and really like the rest of the cover, something about the helmet just seems... off, perhaps too barbaric, taking the salamander theme too far yet not doing the whole way (like the wolf helmets of the space wolves.), I dunno, just the helmet spoils it for me somehow.

In general, I would agree with you- I don't like the OTT dragon thing people have going for them right now- for Emperor's sake, veterans occasionally wear ceremonial drakescale loincloths, nothing more.

But I digress. I am prepared to make an exception in the case of Vulkan, as I always imagine his personal armour is far more ornate

I seem to recall a Firedrake of Vulkan's inner circle of war-buddies being described as a savage, with bones, a red mohawk and warpaint, etc. I think it was in Promethean Sun. The Salamanders aren't savage per se, but they can be pretty "totemic" with the whole reptilian motiffs. And I think it suits them, it's not like they come from a Forge World. They live in Volcano Land, with dragons and Dark Elves/Eldar/Elves. I'd dress accordingly too.

Plus, these were the old days of the Crusade, there was much more freedom - and, consequently, variety - to a Marine's armour decoration.
