Wolf Lord models

Hile, my brethren!

I am completely new to the world of 40k tabletop (not the series itself though, I'm a huge fan of the 40k and Horus Heresy books). Since I have been enamoured by the rabid and deadly force of nature that are the Wolves, I chose them as my first army.

I have bought a Codex and have been reading through the book.

One extremely noob question though, re: Wolf Lord models; How do I get one of them? just a Wolf Lord model per se? I understand that in boxes like the Space WOlves Battleforce there are pieces for units like the Blood Claws and Grey Hunters, but none for a Wolf Lord. I would like to name and make my own, instead of using one of those preset HQ heroes.

I've been searching the interwebz for the answer, but all I could find were models of famous Wolf Lords eg. Canis, Ulrik, Ragnar et al, not forgetting HRH Logan the Fangfather. Does that mean I have to use one of these as a base and modify it?

I humbly beg thine apologies for such a stupid question, for I am but a pup.

Not a stupid question at all!

Simplest answer, create one!

You do this by taking parts from kits (SW Grey Hunter/Blood Claw Box, SW Terminator box, even the Space Marine Commander box) and building your own.

This is referred to as a scratch build, meaning it's a unique creations not already set by GW or others.

Your only limited to your imagination, and what wargear the Codex can permit :cuss

Good luck brother! And welcome to the Fang!

Welcome brother! (Passes an ale)

The answer to your question is simple: you build one.

If you are not planning on playing a specific named character (Logan, Ragnar) then you simply build a model from the kit and call it a "Wolf Lord."

If you want to build a Wolf Lord on foot in Power Armor, you just buy the Space Wolves box and build one of the models as your Wolf Lord. If you want him in Terminator Armor you buy the Wolf Guard Terminator box and build him from there. If you want him on a Thunderwolf Mount (the most fun), you buy the new Thunderwolf Cavalry box, or you can buy the "Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf" model in finecast, but you don't have to.

In short - you don't buy a specific model that is "Wolf Lord" you buy a box of "generic" models and build one to be your Wolf Lord. Understand?

EDIT: Ninja'd! Oh well.

Haha! :cuss

You still make valid points brother! Cheers! ;)

You have a few options....

1. You take the SM Commander Box and combine it with the SW upgrade sprue.

2. You get one of the Finecast/Metal Charachters and use/convert them.

3. You kitbash him out of Grey Hunters or SW Terminators

4. You use the Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf model.

Don't be afraid to use kits from other armies to convert your own WL. Popular bits come from the Chaos line, most especially the marauders and warriors boxes.. as well as the terminator lord (he has a bada$$ cloak). Adding Chaos bits can help make your guy feel grittier and less sterile. The wolflord on the thunderwolf mount, though, doesn't need any help looking better, IMO.

Bottom line, have fun with it and welcome to the Fang.

all good answers so far, when building your wolf lord try to make his pose stand out more by being different that the other models> You can also mount him on a higher base such as adding something for him to stand on. (look though our gallery for ideas). Giving him more bling such as WTT, wolf fur coats, runic armor and/or no helmet. You can paint him with more detail as well if you wish.

Look up on how to bend and sculpt the new plastic, really easy to get the pose your looking for.

Best of luck

Vrox.

I've never liked this practice, particularly since 40k is now played with a true line of sight system. You're only allowing your opponent a better opportunity to see your lord if he's trying to stay within cover.

I couldn't agree more. I bought a box of Chaos Marauder Horsemen and used pretty much every bit on the sprue. I even converted SM bodies on to the horses to use as Thundercav until the models came out.

Here is the Wolf Lord/Lone Wolf I made using bits from that set - the head and the axe:

Standing out is often the price you have to pay look good and be heroic.
