Captain Laavain Sunder
Hey guys!! In my last post I introduced myself as being new to space wolves and I got some fantastic feedback very quickly. Now I was just wondering if you guys could help me model a 2000pt army? I'm asking this because when I watch or read battle reports, people don't use the units that I was choose so idontow if Im doing it wrong. ATM I have a battleforce and njaal the stormcaller ( mainly because I play eldar and tyranids ) I wanted to buy a wolf lord with some thunderwolf cavalry, or a unit of wolf guard termies, or even a vindicator?? As you can see I'm quite stuck. Any help will be appreciated Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/249773-what-to-buy/ Share on other sites
henrywalker
well firstly you cant do it wrong. It all depends on what you want from your army. Do you want it to be competitive? do you want it to be fun? do you want it to be fluffy? or do you just want what you like the look of? njal is fun to play with and the battle force is nice and flexible, you can build 24 marines with that if your careful (other than spare legs the sprues each have enough for 12 marines) so you can make yourself a lord, a lone wolf, a rune priest, what have you. I can tell you now that the thunderwolf cavalry are great fun to build and paint, i just finished my own squad + lord this morning. As i say its hard to advise if we don't know what sort of thing you are looking for. I would suggest trying to inject as much character into your army as possible will let you get the most enjoyment out of it. Don't underestimate lone wolves for this, they can be a LOT of fun and they are pretty useful in the game. I have played my lonewolf in my last 4 games, in those 4 he has destroyed single handedly; 2 soulgrinders (the same one in two games) a daemon prince and a trygon prime. get back to us with what you want out of your army and i'm sure we can give better advice Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/249773-what-to-buy/#findComment-3026199 Share on other sites
Wulfebane
Take a look at the other 2000pt armies written in the Army List section to get some pointers. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/249773-what-to-buy/#findComment-3026210 Share on other sites
Captain Laavain Sunder
Tbh I'm looking to be more competitive then anything, I play against necrons, tyranids and eldar mostly. I like the idea of some units but I'm not too sure on Which 1's are more cost effect ect.. And Which ones are most viable at the start of an army Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/249773-what-to-buy/#findComment-3026252 Share on other sites
henrywalker
Well arjacs powers are nice against Eldar. Especially jet bike armies. As I said I can't get enough of my lone wolf who is surprisingly good and isn't very noticed. I run mine with a SS power fist and 2 wolves TWC are brilliant IMO I have three with storm shields and a frost axe as well as a lord with a hammer and SS. They have done me so much good I'm going to buy at least three more. I think your best bet is to check out the lists section as well as any very successful battle reports against the armies you mentioned. N.B. oh and out scouts are awesome. Well worth taking Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/249773-what-to-buy/#findComment-3026262 Share on other sites

WG Vrox
Give us a proposed list of what your thinking for your army and we can help fine tune it. The important part is that you cover your bases such as 4 scoring units for a 2k list, 4 scoring units are not required but for someone new to the wolves its better to play it safe. Second piece is to decide on a transportation method such as Rhinos RB or Drop Pods. Third base is what HQ you are wanting to build around. And final an overall tactic such as aggressive fast list or a conservative defensive list or anywhere in-between. The nice thing about the wolves is their dynamic play style which means almost anything goes, but you as the list builder must ensure you have a battle plan for each type of list you will face. Matt D
do you want to work up to 2000 or do you want to start at 2000? i would say buy 2 razorbacks (these can be used as rhinos or razors), the regular space marine squad box (for the melta gun and missile launcher and to mix bits), a box of devastators (for the heavy weapons since all are good and its another missile launcher), and then buy the unit you think is balls to the wall cool (sounds like you like thunder wolves :) ). with this its a good starting force for a 1500 army since you will have 3 troops with transports that you can wok up to 2000. hope this helps! Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
Most of the competetive lists that you will see out there play the 'Rhino Rush' style of build. Several Rhino's with (usually) 8 Grey Hunters in them, attach a Power Fist/Combi-Melta Wolf Guard (Higher Ld is good), and lastly a Rune Priest. Take as many packs (3) of Long Fangs as you can muster up, and there you have it. I just regurgitated up the cookie-cutter basis for most competitive Space Wolf armies. The truly great thing about our army (well, it's all truly great!!) is that we are Jacks of all trades. We can play lots of different styles, and do it well. I say glean what you can out of the deck list section, and then play around with what kind of style works for you. For me building up a SW army has been LOTS of trial and error, but now I have over 4k points of models and can field any kind of army I want to!! jmurph
I would be leery of running vindis with TWC. A bad scatter can really ruin your day. For your core, you need troops and, competitively speaking, GH are the only real choice. There are two main schools of thought on how to run them. Either min squads with flamers and las/plas razors to maximize plasma and lascannons or 10 man squads in rhinos, usually with MotW, melta, and standard- pick either a WG with combi melta and Fist or the double squad meltas. For heavy support, the most cost efficient choice is Long Fangs with MLs in Razors. 3 squads gives you a horrendous amount of firepower. I like to mix some lascannons in the squads, but YMMV. Fast Attack sees TWC as the standouts. To compromise between cheap bare TWC and expensive TH loaded units, I recommend 1 SS per squad and vary the eq of the rest so you can play with wound allocation. HQ almost always sees 1-2 rune priests as their powers are some of the best in the game. JoTWW is the much griped about offensive power that will indeed be very useful if you play Tyranids and Necrons alot thanks to the low I. However, I prefer Living Lightning for general utility and Storm Caller for protecting your forces on advance. Murderous hurricane is a great backup if there is any chance you will hit BAs. Don't overlook Wolf Lords on TW, though. Keep him cheap and use him as a missile splitting off from a TWC group. I recommend picking up a pack or two of wolf scouts. Elite is a very competitive slot for SWs, but their special rules are amazing. Take a melta and MoTW and stick a WG in there w/combi weapon and Fist and you have a brutal anti-tank squad. Or go flamer w/WG w combi-flamer for ant infantry to kill things who like to sit in the backfield. Also, a unit of 5 WG w/combi-meltas in a drop pod is and auto-include for me. Best suicide tank hunters ever. Combined with the melta scouts, and the flurry of missiles it really eats meched lists!
