all your base are belong to us

A very good question!

I think two of the biggest factors -to me- would be:

1. What will compliment the miniature's color scheme? Imperial Fists done on a Mars-red wasteland/rocks would really pop. An aside to this is what image do you want? Green marines in forest terrain wouldn't give much contrast but if you're wanting them to seem camouflaged then it's entirely appropriate.

2. What terrain are you likely to be gaming in/on. If your LFGS has only green fields then bases representing starship corridors are going to be incongruous. My local GW has three tables, one snow/ice, one a barren grey rocky wasteland and one brown.

I personally chose to do my Thousand Sons with a desert/wasteland theme as the colors go well with the marines' red armour (plus there's the element of 'All is dust' foreshadowing in there).

If I start up a second army I would be tempted to do either urban basing (as I would also like to make more urban terrain) or snow/ice to match the game board we often fight on.

See thats it exactly right there, I want it to look good on the model to compliment it, I dont have a board yet so that cant be designed later to follow the bases. Im still waaay early in the planning phase yet it will probally be awhile before I put actual paint to plastic I dont have a model to show you yet but the plan right now is a DA successor all bleached bone, DA green shoulders and weapons, with the vets getting black robes. what would you recommend on them? there are going to be fleet based so I thought maybe a sheet metal/diamond plate black base? I think the dark/black metal looking bases would look good on the regulars but the black robes might blend to much, be to much black. I dont know havnt decided yet, thought about a desert base, it would be easy but that may be a bit much tan you think?

Hmm...

How about painting one marine (you'll probably want to do a test model to check the scheme anyway) and make a couple of bases with different terrain-types...see which he goes best with.

Oh, and you could work up an image of your marine in the B&C Marine Painter

I thought of one extra point: I vary the terrain a little across squads with the same army, though keeping the same general theme. For example the tactical squad are on basic sandy bases. The vanguard are on very rough, rocky terrain. When get some sniper scouts they'll be more urban-themed, though still dusty as if they're fighting in a desert area.

That way you get some more variation.

everyone is based the same? thats interesting ive never heard that before that would actually look pretty cool lol

yep, everyone is based the same snow/icy mix. We only got 6 players and 3 tables, and i think it looks awesome to have unified bases on all different armies.

I posted this recently in another thread about basing, but there is a lot of good stuff in the Librarium.

Lots of modelling and painting tutorials including some great ones on basing.

For example...

Stone floors

Metallic bases

Urban basing

thanks kierdale, I have seriously never been in the librarium before lol, yes I can be that idiotic. I think I am going to be busy for a long time there is a ton of really cool stuff in here..... @#&$!!!! now Im going to havta redesign my army yet again .... one day ill get there.... maybe...
