is it better to make your own paint scheme for space marines

Recommended Posts

You can paint your minis however you want. There yours. There are hundreds of chapters out there all with there own unique history and info. Take the Ulteamarines (which im guessing is what you ment by blue and gold) for example there themed on ancient rome with the helemt crests. If you want to do a DIY chapter you can do what colours you like with there own unique heraldy and symbols even make up a back story/theme. You just got to make sure the follow the rules and the codex. Have a play about on the space marine painter and see which colours you like.

Hope it helps mate

Second what tallos5 said,

My old DIY chapter were called the shadow dragons and had the same chapter symbol as the salamanders.

So you do what you want, the famous Doghouse wants to pink marines so you do what you want.

If you want to try and make your own scheme for your Space Marines then have a look at the Marine Painter:

It's very good for seeing what looks good before you apply some paint!

It is most certainly fine to create your own colour scheme. Using the B&C Painter is a good idea, too. But before you do that, you could also just look through the codex or Lexicanum's pictorial list of Space Marine Chapters (this links to the first part, the second is linked to at the bottom of that page under "see also") to see whether you like one of those. Not all Space Marines wear blue and gold, actually very few of them do (and that is even though there are at least three chapters with exactly the same colour scheme as the Ultramarines and just a different chapter symbol, but that is beside the point I guess).

@Tellos05: check the link in my signature, maybe it'll help.

Blue and Gold? Meh. Real Marines wear Black and Gold. :P

Also, even if you set on an established Chapter and use their colours, never forget there is a multitude of ways to take it 'somewhere else', make the army your own, while staying true to the chapter. You want cohesion in the force, but not monotony. Be careful though, customization can become an addiction. *Twitch* I should know.

Take your time and choose a scheme, and your technique wisely. Sacrificing a few practice miniatures is usually worth it in the long run. You'll be doing it for a while, even if you plan on only a modest army.

I suggest you take the time to pick a scheme you really like whether it's one GW has shown or one of your own creation.

I also suggest you think about how the schemes fall into your painting skill level and how much time you want to put into them. Some schemes may look great in a picture or your mind but may more difficult or time consuming that they look.

My personal chapter, which has been nameless for 25 years, is quartered red and white. They look great and have been part of the reason I've worked at improving my skill over the years but here are times I kick myself for picking that scheme since it takes me forever to paint. I'm sitting at around 5k points in my red and white after 25 years while I've done well over 20k points of IF for commision in the past 5. SO keep that in mind.
