Lions of Achaea

I've been a member on here for about 3 years now, and posted very little, but very much enjoyed the work of others in this thread as well as the WIP thread. I've finally decided to get myself together and post up some of my models. I would describe myself very much as a tabletop quality painter. Whilst it would be awesome to be able to paint to a higher standard, I know that the time investment is a bit beyond what I can stomach. As a result, I'm super-happy with the GW washes (though I haven't tried the most recent paints at all!), most of my models are washed/drybrushed (which actually looks okay, I reckon!), though I have recently been branching out more into some crude blending.

The inspiration for the Lions of Achaea comes from Dan Simmons Ilium/Olympos books, with mighty bronze age heros storming the halls of the gods. I wanted them to be a recently-founded chapter with a penchant for using more "modern" technology, and spending a lot of time fighting Xenos, and exploring an ancient Dyson Sphere. I use the space wolves rules (and many bitz) for them, to try and make each model stand out, as befits the story I've imagined for them. Anyhow, without further ado, here are some of my Lions of Achaea:

Unnamed (as yet!) Razorback:

I'll try and post up a more complete picture of the whole force in the next few days. It will give me a chance to unpack it and revel in my tiny (mostly) plastic army!

Let me know what you think!

good looking clean cut army you've got. Your colour scheme seems to work for you.

I'd use a bit more wash, though. It becomes very clear on the Razorback. I'd get some badab on the tracks, since they are simply shiny now and badab tones that down and adds an awesome shade (to any metal part). The eagle would have to get some wash too (eagles are brilliant for wash) - I'd use some Sephia for that brown-yellow shade, but you could go with something else too (badab, ogryn, possibly others too) - if you've already used some I'd advice you to use more! It has to be visible at a distance, right? Then we have to exaggerate the effect.

Then I'd work a bit on the bases. Some of your models appear to be baseless as for yet? Something you aim to amend? Just some stones with drybrush makes the model appear much more complete - add grass for extra effect.

Your Ezeikel model is awesome. Really catches your colourscheme well (however, I have to say bases, bases, bases :) ). For the sword I guess you have done some sort of blending style? Looks really neat - I use a simple teqnique where I simply do a heavy drybrush at the top and lessen it down as I go along the blade. It creates roughly the same effect with less sharpness between the colours. I also use some wash to make it all blend a bit together.

The reason is that it might be a simple way to achieve what you want? You can try it if you think it sounds interresting, anyway.

Last thing: Highlights on the head of brother Proioxis: Awesome.

Keep it up :P

Thanks for the comments and tips!

I've been kind of skeptical about using a lot of wash on the vehicles, but I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and just do it! I've used a bit of a really cheap acrylic paint that's been really, really watered down as a mud wash on scenery before, so I'll give it a go on the tracks and see how it looks there...

As to the bases, I'm actually gearing up to re-base my entire army in the style of Proioxis and the Grey Hunters. I really like that style, and whilst it's a lot more complex than the simple black grit I've used for the majority of my army, it also looks a LOT better.
