Starting Space Wolves

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I'm a solid Blood Angels player (well, for the last 4 weeks I've been playing 40k) and I love hem to bits. But we all know that the time will come when I will want to move on, and I'm looking at Space Wolves. They're just so awesome! So when that time comes I don't want to waste any time pondering on what I need. I started this thread so that when I need it I can just have everything planned out so I can get going fast. If its any help for suggested buys or lists if you'd like to help me, I love thunderwolf cavalry and for a HQ it has to be a Wolf Lord on wolf or Canis Wolfborn. Thanks in advance!

It really depends on what your playstyle/list preferences other than your TW HQ and TWC are. For the most part, you can't go wrong with buying a few boxes of the Space Wolf packs, as you can make Grey Hunters (highly recommended), Blood Claws, Lone Wolves, and Wolf Guard (also recommended) from one kit. Adding heavy weapons to a pack kit gives you Long Fangs, and the pack kit also comes with more Space Wolf appropriate Scout heads, so it's a winner all around. After a couple of pack boxes, get some Razorback kits (can work as Rhinos or Razorbacks) for them to ride into battle with.

As far as what kind of list to run, again it's all your playstyle/preference. Typically, unless you're going for a themed/fluff list like the ton o' wolves Cannis Wolfborn list which brings 2 units of 15 Fenrisian Wolves as troops, you'll want several squads of Grey Hunters. I'm fairly new to SW myself, but I've found that 3 sqauds of 7-8 Grey Hunters is just right for me.

Check out the codex and see what appeals to you. Also, check out this website which is chock full of info on Space Wolves and their units:

I can be overwhelming just getting started. I quit playing in 2002 and sold everything off. And I do mean everything. I picked it back up during the train wreck that was 4th edition. I started a CODEX marine army and tailored them to be close combat. Then came 5th edition and was faced with retooling most of my marines or start a new army.

Thus was born, after much thought, the 2nd coming of my Space Wolves. I have played Wolves for years so it wasen't a hard choice to make. In any event I have always been happy with the way they look and the feal of them. My guess is that you felt the same when you selected the "vampires". Stick with them a while and get to know them better. If you choose later on to get another army them the Space Wolves are the best choice.

Like I said though, get to know your army better. I'm always suprised when I learn something new that I had not planned on and then turning it on the other player. :)

But for Russ sake, do become a Codex Thumping Ultramarine player. :P

Nothing wrong with being over eager :D The real question is what army do you want to have? Forgive me if I sound controversial, but space wolves are not an assault force. If your just wanting to hack stuff up with chainswords, you'll probably be better of sticking with blood angels.

However, if you fancy fighting with cunning and ferocity, then space wolves are for you. As others have said, you can't go far wrong with grey hunters, they're fantastic; basically tactical marines, but better in every concievable way and cheaper ^_^

If I only wanted to hack things up, i wouldn't be looking to Space Wolves. I want that from BA but from a SW army I want to be able to utilize a healthy and strong combination of short ranged firepower, long ranged fire power (Long Fangs FTW) and charging in (Thunderwolf time!). The ability to kill stuff without needing to get up close and personal is awesome, especially having troop choices taht are cheaper but better than tac. marines.

Space Wolves are just so awesome in both looks and performance. I want them as a second army for these reasons. The cunning of the wolf is a blessing, and the ferocity to match that is hard to find in the 41st millenium. My only concern is that by time I'm done with BA, I won't have cash to have SW.

Its hard to have a hobby but be too young to have a job, and therefore have no income (thats right, no allowance ;)).*Sigh*
