Battle Damage on Word Bearer

Recommended Posts

I brought five CSM's with me for over Easter so I could play about with battle damage. I don't tend to do battle damage on minis too often because I like things to be "just right", and battle damage means going over my hard work! However I realise CSM's look especially good with battle damage so want to get it just right.

I'm quite happy with most of the battle damage here, there's things on it I'm not happy with (some of the battle damage is too large, and not subtle enough). Just wanted to get people's thought. Do you prefer battle damage or not?

I do prefer it, in moderation.

For your mini, I'd say the amount of battle damage is perfect. You will want to finish that army sometime y'know, needlessly poring over details isn't helping you do that :teehee:

Keep it simple (like above) and keep it up. :tu:

I'd agree that looks just right. I think it varies a lot: from painter to painter, army to army, and I'd say basing is a factor - what image you're aiming for (from 1000heathen's beautifully battered MMs to some of the cleanest Ultras).

On that WB the damage isn't too obvious/striking. It adds to the look.

It does look good, but i do wonder if it isn't time wasted.

Ive been ooh-ing and aah-ing over adding battle damage to my marines, and while i think it looks great, it only really looks great in pictures or when you're holding the model up to your face.

On the table top, or when viewing the squad as a whole, minor battle damage isn't really noticeable.

Initial thought;

Tzen's on B&C? Fantastic! -faints-

(That's my own, weird way of saying I love your WB log on Warseer)

But on topic!

Firstly, I think that your battle damage is great, and really works. Secondly, I think battle damage in general is great, but go OTT with it and it can obscure the colours already applied.

Hey Crimson Hawk! :)

Glad people like it. My plan is to go back over all my current Word Bearers and add the damage. I'm gonna paint a few other models first and see what I can do, see if I can try different styles of battle damage.

Here is a pic of the next guy but without battle damage. This way you can compare him when I have popped the damage on and you can tell me what you think!

With or without!

So here is the battle damage.

What do we think?

I did try adding flecks of silver in some of the damage, but it just didnt look right. It was too small and just looked like I'd been a bit careless with silver drybrushing!

Back image for the sake of it.

Gotta say the added battle damage really puts the miniature onto a new level. The battle damage looks just right, subtle enough to not be an eyesore and yet still noticeable to see the details of the wear and tear the armour has gone through. :)

In my opinion, that is the best looking form of battle damage. Its nice and subtle, but still makes the armour look well used, so I'd say go for that style.

Just a question though, are you just using some black lines for the damage that are highlighted as per usual?

I think you have got the balance about right. It can be a bit tricky as sometimes the battle damage can gloss over what was already a great paint job.

I think that you've got it right though, the undamaged guy is a seriously nice paint job but with the damage it just makes it pop that little bit more.

Well, the concensus seems to be pro battle damage, and a few people saying no! I am still undecided. :)

Thanks for the kind words so far though!

Okay last one!

Or well, I just wont bother posting before and after pics after this one! :D

Before:

After pic will be here in a while.

Also someone asked for a pic of the highlights on their own. I'm not really sure what this means? And I can't remember what forum it was in. Maybe i dreamt it. Anyway this is the last two members of this small 5 man practice squad.

Is this what you mean? Not really sure what is meant by "highlights on their own". >.<

I too am hesitant about battle damage on figures, so I can understand hpw you feel. But personally bud, I think you have nailed it dead on. Not to much or too little.

Do you mind if I ask what your technique is?

It's mega simple. Highlight the area you want to have battle damage on it with your minis final highlight. So in this case it was a 50/50 mix of orange and yellow. I then randomly picked areas to be battle damaged and painting small highlights here and there.

Inside the hightlight I then put dabs of 50/50 Scorched earth and Chaos Black. Make sure the highlight is clear at the top of the battle damage, as it makes it look like its a dent in the armour as opposed to a smudge in the paint work!

That's it really.

I'm still mastering the technique myself, but so far that's all I've learnt by doing it. The smaller you can make the battle damage the better it looks! (to me anyway)

I know the gun looks crap, but its just a test mini after all.

Also need to do the studs on his helm again!

Yeah, I think I will slowly add battle damage to all the minis in my army. Adds a little more character. I need to go over my very first Word Bearers anyway. They look awful compared to my latest ones.

:) I think you've got it spot on there.

I've struggled with battle damage in the past on some of my own mini's and finding a balance between enough and too much is the tricky part for me. Some of my early efforts just ended up making the mini look badly painted but smaller/finer is better to my eye.
