Question About New Paints

Recommended Posts

Hey gang! I'm looking to replicate the look achieved by Brother Synth on his fantastic thread. However, since he posted his technique, all of the paints on GW's website have changed! Can anyone help me match the new paints to the older ones? Here was his recipe:

Black Undercoat

Deneb Stone coat

Golden Yellow, two thin coats

Devlan Mud Wash into recesses

Build up Golden Yellow again

Sunburst yellow highlight

Light wash with Gryphonne Sepia

Thanks in advance! And thanks again to Brother Synth for being such an inspiration.

The chart provided by Jacinda is great if you want to compare a wide range of paints from different makers.

GWs 'official' conversion chart is also located on their site here, if you just want a straight up conversion of the GW paints from the old range to the new.

Just how closely they match up is another question completely.

Ok, this is a little aside, but... wow. They got rid of half their paint range, including some of my favorite colors.

Guess I should've seen it coming years ago when they tossed Storm Blue.

What are you talking about? The old range had 75 colors this new one has 145, how is that getting rid of half? The old paints are there just with new names and formulations so they are unlikely to be exact matches. If you want exact matches you need to go to Coat D'Arms website as this was the old GW line.

Hey,

What are you talking about?

He's probably talking about GW abandoning popular products with no regard for the wishes of their customers.

Put simply, "145" does NOT mean "73 new colors plus the old 72 cos we luv u."

It means, "This is all we'll stock from now on, so just deal."

Protip: They didn't get rid of half - they got rid of ALL -

New paint vendor/ lowest bidder/ different materials.

"145" obviously doesn't signify the number of shades.

Even so, Vallejo has over 300 basic and 150 specialized paints already.

Foundry has 266 paints - many in base/ shade/ highlight 3-packs.

Reaper has 216 paints in just their basic range.

Coat d'Arms has over 145 very fine paints.

GW's promises of higher quality while cutting costs aren't funny any more.

Not since Finecast ...

This. I have no idea how they'll color match to my old paints, and if they will at all. Remember Blood Angels Orange, if you will?

Some of the "ranges" listed on the GW website are really strange. The Khorne one looks like it'll make pink 'Zerkers. I'm not so sure I like their layering, either. I like my paints a lot more opaque, my inks shiny, and all that.

Looks like I might end up finally moving into those ranges. I've dabbled a bit with PP inks since GW discontinued their own line and got those damnable washes, but I might just go whole hog.

Not since Finecast ...

Dunno, I haven't had any bad experiences with Finecast just yet. I had more issues with overly-hard metals after the switch from lead to pewter than I did with the switch from pewter to Finecast. Either way, I wasn't surprised at the complaints about it. You wouldn't believe the moaning and gnashing of teeth when the lead to pewter switch happened.

I can only echo others suggestions really. GW do have a 'rough' conversion chart, but I haven't had a chance to see how accurate they are. I'm guessing they will be close enough, but won't know until I run out. I'm close to running out of Devlan and Badab black washes so I guess I'll be trying the equivalents soon. However I did stock up on Golden Yellow and Deneb Stone, so might be awhile till I replace those.

Of course there are other companies paints, so its really up to trial and error really. Still I wish you luck, and thanks for the kind words! Will look forward to your progress.

Not to mention the new paint range has been in development for 2+ years and the price is staying the same per paint pot. If you think they're trying to scam you then they're sure been playing a long game right? I mean pouring all that time and money into development just so they can make you buy all new colours? How dare they try and develop a superiour product. Shame on them! And it is superiour, honestly and truthfully after using them I'm happy they did it.

I use vallejo at the moment and I'm more than happy to put them aside and use the new citadel colours. The yellow you can get over black with a few layers and glazes (that are prebottled I don't mean mixing any fancy glazes) is awesome. Plus with 145 colours combining bases, shades, glazes and layer paints with a little bit of experimentation you can colour match even if the matches suggested on the GW website are not perfect.

It might not be ideal that we have to colour match, and if after people have tried these new colours they hate them that is fine. I'm more than happy to say they may not be for everyone. But to dismiss them out of hand as being a swindle, as being new paint vendor/lowest bidder/different materials is unfair and it smacks of hating for the sake of hating. The old citadel paints made me use other lines to supplement where I thought they were lacking, these new paints are just better. They're made in house using new formulas made in development for years, they cover better, in less coats, requiring less effort on painting, making it more enjoyable and they give superiour results across the board than any range I personally have used before.

Try them out, try and get some colour matches and give them a go. Even paint a totally random model and just give some random paints in this range a whirl, who knows you may even like them. Then we can all put the finecast issue behind us and admit that GW do some good things as well as things we don't always like.
